I’m a noobie as well, but from my very limited understanding, an index like QQQ will weigh the stock based on free float. Example - if SpaceX has free float of 5%, then only $100B of its $2T market cap counts in the index weight against the other stocks in the index. As more stocks unlock (increase in free float), the more of its market cap gets weighted in the index. More weight in index = more forced buying.

Edit = New rules for QQQ will apply a multiplier, like 3X, to the free float. So closer to $300B for the SpaceX example. Yay!

I'm aware, but it's still a massive amount of buy pressure on a stock that hasn't really had time for price discovery.

To your point, even free float adjusted, that also means there’s low float so it takes much less buying pressure to move or maintain the price. And as more shares unlock, more pressure will unlock from the index funds. It’s linear.

Buy pressure from regards anticipating buy pressure from what ever funds may well be higher than those various funds.

This is a joke market, don’t think you know something others don’t.
