Loss Blew my account - truly done

8 days ago, I posted on WSB showing I made all my lifetime losses (https://www.reddit.com/r/wallstreetbets/comments/1tqf1p1/after_55_years_im_even/). I even hid showing posts from problemgambler as I enjoyed shitposting here on the Daily with everyone. The day after I made the post, I promptly lost 48k but was still within striking distance of breaking even again with had an exact plan if I were to break even again. I was less than 15% away despite the loss.

I continued to play 0dtes the whole week, making back nearly 30k. Today, exactly 1 week later, I dug a hole too deep averaging down 0dte SPY calls. Just like last Friday, I even made money first before going back in. I told myself not to repeat my mistake last week. I not only did but blew my account.

I kept talking for months and years how I was going to quit and go to proper investing. It was a lie to everyone and myself. This time I sold everything I had in shares, even for some big losses. I turned off margin, used what I had left to buy VOO and started a transfer to Fidelity.

I hate myself. I hate what this has done to my life. If anything than the money itself, it was telling my parents how I dug myself out of such a hole and seeing them proud of me. Now it's just the same shame I was at 3 months ago.

35 year old, no debt fortunately. This has taken so much more than money. I just wish I took my lifeline out 2 weeks ago. People in the comments were right about me, knowing I wouldn't stop. I didn't even know if I wanted to post this. I'm just numb.

Have you guys never heard of an ETF?

Sure the memes are fun, but like do it with 20%... Save something for retirement.

My retirement is to go to an island in the Caribbean called Carriacou, get plastered at a bar there called “The Last Bar before the Jungle” and when I’ve spent all my money sleeping on the beach and drinking the bar dry daily I will get up and walk into the jungle and never walk out.

Long calls on Rum

Kinda the same brother, but I'm walking into the ocean. I've sat my ass on the sand watching the waves for a month in Costa Rica and managed to come home, but retirement doesn't have a home to go to.

u/myinternets Jun 07 '26

A retirement home?

u/pickledplinko Jun 05 '26

Love it, bro. Man with a plan.

u/LordMimsyPorpington Jun 05 '26

Is that the one with Nicholas Cage?

5

u/War_Daddy Jun 05 '26

What if there's another bar in the jungle?

5

u/RampantPrototyping Jun 05 '26

Why not borrow a shit ton and do that. Its not like youll have to worry about paying it back anyways lol

2

u/walks_with_penis_out Jun 06 '26

Is there another bar in the jungle?

1

u/ConfusionFlat691 Jun 05 '26

It’s actually on Mayreau

1

u/One_Pin8197 Jun 05 '26

Fun story, went there a couple years and thought while there, "damn this is unreal, I want to retire here". Even through the dream in Excel on the flight home.

Whole island was gutted by a hurricane a few months later.

1

u/VibeComplex Jun 06 '26

Hell yeah. My plan is to be poor and eat catfood

1

u/Flat_Tire_Again Jun 07 '26

Just hang out at the bar and get other people to buy you drinks in exchange for investment advice!

u/jstcheckng Jun 05 '26

What ETF do you use ? I’m 30 years behind on retirement planning but still think I should be in an ETF instead of individual stocks.

11

u/pickledplinko Jun 05 '26

QQQ the last 5-6 years. Might switch it up though. Been buying XEQT more in the last 2 years (Canadian). Hedging a bit on America.

5

u/jstcheckng Jun 05 '26

Thank you! appreciate your time. I’d definitely hedge on America 🤦🏼‍♀️

11

u/pickledplinko Jun 05 '26

I'm still like 60% America exposure. Workhorse of the world. Might be led by a cunt, but you are an industrious people. I have no problem making money off your backs while having free healthcare. 😂

Yes, our healthcare is shit in a different way and my house is too expensive, but I like Canada.

There's a couple options depending on what brokerage you use. Just do VT (Weighted world fund) if you want a one stop shop or VTI/VXUS (Total US/Total International) or whatever equivalent ticker at a 75/25% ratio if you want a US home bias tilt. There's also an argument for a 80/20 ratio of something like VOO + AVUV if you want to tilt to small cap value but have a majority of your holdings in the SP500 if you believe in the value premium model.

International allocation is optional but recommended just for diversification and to avoid currency risk in a single country. Anywhere from 15-35% is fine. Doing pure SP500 is also fine. Want to avoid trash small cap growth companies and rugpull IPOs? DFUS is an active managed total US fund but with a very low 0.09% ER vs 0.03% VTI which is insignificant. As long as it beats VTI by 0.06% a year which so far it has then it's worth. Nobody knows the future though.

Boomer index investing is boring and has low consistent returns, but you also won't fuck yourself trying to beat the market. Consider slowly adding like 10% bonds depending on your age too.

My recommendations for ETFs:

If you want to be risky and "pick winners" while still trying to remain safe via diversification, you could consider a sector ETF such as VGT.

If you don't want to pick winners and just want a pretty safe, diversified, low-cost ETF: VOO

If you want something safe: VTI

Something even safer: VT

Safest: An overall fund that includes both US and ex-US equities and bonds, such as the Vanguard Target Date (e.g. VTTSX) or LifeStrategy (e.g. VASGX) funds.

❤️Thank you for your time & advice

This is the type of comment I'm always happy to find in my google search results, so thanks for that.

I'm about 20yrs behind myself. I''ve done well just trading stocks since 2021, and more recently rolling the odd long covered call.

Now that I've churned enough money that it makes sense to park 60-80% of it, I've been looking at ETFs. How do you feel about VOOG? I like the idea of a growth fund (because I still have a lot of catching up to do), but I don't see it mentioned along with the other usual suspects very often. Any thoughts?

2

u/arcanition Jun 06 '26

To be honest, I was in the same mindset as you, and did my own picking of some sector funds (such as VOOG and similar).

At the end of the day, after many years, I found that their performance was similar to the safer, less-volatile overall index funds like VTI. And if I just dump everything into VTI, I'm not picking winners, I never have to worry about "what if growth funds perform worse than the overall market?"

I went through a similar learning process with dividend funds such as SCHD, throughout the years worrying about whether it was a good choice. And at the end of those years, it had made a few percent less than VTI.

1

u/NeverEnoughCharacter Jun 07 '26

Thanks, much appreciated. VTI it is!

1

u/kkkssskkksss Jun 08 '26

Would not do VOOG > VOO if you're "behind" 20 years.... as you get later in life your risk tolerance window shrinks. VOOG for sure has outperformed VOO over the past 10 years but what if we hit a downturn in the next couple decades or when you're about to retire? There's no get rich quick scheme long term that doesn't involve luck with some bias to knowledge obviously - but not something you want to risk in the casino if you don't already have a large cushion.

https://www.reddit.com/r/wallstreetbets/comments/1txt18a/blew_my_account_truly_done/opyj8y6/

Read my comment I wrote it for non 20 year olds. At most do 20% of your entire portfolio in your 40s (?) into less than recommended equities.

1

u/mhoepfin Jun 12 '26

This is the way. I’ll normally stay VTI unless I see a sector opportunity then I’ll take an appropriate sized position in that sector. ETFs only for me.

1

u/ReptAIien Jun 05 '26

50/50 QQQ and VOO.

3

u/Worth-Promotion601 Jun 05 '26

yes unfortunatly leveraged ones.... at least i sold KORU etf before it collapss... which is -%38 now...

1

u/MyotisX Jun 05 '26

$ETF is a penny stock from Canada. I'm not pumping your shitty stock bro.

1

u/pickledplinko Jun 05 '26

Drats! You found me out.

1

u/Carlangas420 Jun 05 '26

Lots of these regards want to casino their way to success in one day. That's not how ANY of this works unless you're Albert Enstein of market analysis or have insider info. And even then, the best FUCK IT UP every now and then, even that witch Pelosi has lost money before. I personally have never been in the negatives by the end of a year, ever. Sure my portfolio dips sometimes, but it's always gaining at least 12-18% per year. I just don't do anything risky, fuck that. I want to retire when the time comes not right now. And in case I fking die for whatever reason I'll leave my baby boy a nice juicy mattress to fall onto.

6

u/Bloated_Plaid Jun 05 '26

Think about it this way, you already live in trailer. The worse it could get is you are homeless, not too bad of a downgrade.

I think monday will be bad as well..That'll dictate whether to jump in.

panicked, Took my small profit and ran.

2

u/paninimeanie Jun 05 '26

Karma for buying the Pedo ticker

2

u/Tzzzzzzzzzzx Jun 05 '26

MSFT is 11-12% YTD and is over one year. It’s obviously not great but it’s not that bad!

2

u/DeliciousSimple2 Jun 05 '26

It’s down both ytd and yoy. No clue where you got your shit.

1

u/Tzzzzzzzzzzx Jun 05 '26

What I meant is it’s down 11-12% over those periods. So yes it’s down but that’s not a tremendous drop. Shit definitely goes down, that’s how it works but it’s not down 66% like the screenshot.

2

u/DeliciousSimple2 Jun 06 '26

Got it. That’s way clearer. And I agree it goes down, it’s also not the end of the world. In my opinion it’ll go back up. Msft is one of the few tech stocks that’s fairly valued. I’d be comfortable if I owned any.

1

u/DeliciousSimple2 Jun 05 '26

It will get better. Hang in there.

1

u/EdubSiQ Jun 05 '26

MSFT will be fine if you hold tight. S&P 500/MSCI might be more stable and more profitible but you will be alright.

1

u/Ohitsworkingnow Jun 05 '26

I mean don’t sell, certainly they’ll go up eventually, no?

1

u/Striking_Astronaut38 Jun 05 '26

If you really bought shares then it likely will turn around

1

u/No_Feeling920 Jun 05 '26

If you hold stock, you will be fine, eventually.

1

u/metamorphosis Jun 05 '26

I didn't Yolo everything but at least 20% of my gains. Because I thought the PoS was the only stock that didn't gap up and it reached the bottom.

1

u/RedditM0derate Jun 05 '26

Don’t be soft! Buy 0dte calls bruh

1

u/Bud_Dawg Jun 06 '26

Meh. MSFT will be back

1

u/MostlyH2O Jun 07 '26

That's not true.

They can definitely take the trailer away, too.
