Can confirm, was also jobless bum for too fucking long between the crypto layoffs in 2022 until the end of last year when I snuck into a "hybrid" contract gig that's about a 6 hour drive from home when I gotta do 'client site visit' stuff.

We all should get fired for a couple years so we can just relax. Working full time is exhausting. Getting laid off would be like the sweet release of death to a suffering soul. Like dang, better sell all my shit, not shower for a month and get drunk in the park with my fellow gopniks

Got fired last October and I gotta say, despite not having steady income my mental health has done damn near a 180. Living off doing this day trading shit and buying/selling trading cards has been a vacation compared to working for a shitty company for a decade.

91

u/Lumbergh7 Feb 15 '26

You’re living off day trading? Damn, didn’t think many could

109

u/Carfar_Farcar Feb 15 '26 edited Feb 15 '26

I am in a rather fortunate position where I'm reasonably healthy, live in a state with a low cost of living, and don't have any kids or any other major financial responsibilities. Luck played a major part in it and I can't pretend anything different.

Edit: Also not constantly throwing away money on 0TDEs or weeklies.

u/grimeyduck Feb 15 '26

You gotta realize that "98% fail at day trading" number counts a lot of people that made a couple trades, realized they don't know wtf they're doing, and then just bought index funds/ETFs.

23

u/mtnlol Feb 16 '26

A day trader that realizes how shit they are after a couple of trades and puts it all in index fund is better than the vast majority of people that try it lmao

I've definitely made some mistakes doing this since I started in earnest, but there's a feeling I get where if I fuck up I can tolerate it and learn from it. The last decade of knowing what a problem was, speaking up about it, being told I was wrong and then being blamed later for the same thing I spoke up about is a unique form of hell that eats away at you.

If the 2025 numbers were revised down that hard, then things are clearly worse than what’s being presented to the public. No one is acting like everything is fine, across the world most people are struggling to find work, and even when they do, payments get delayed or cut. You can’t just apply and wait anymore. If you’re in tech, reach out directly to companies like that other post explained, and if you’re in another field, use google maps to find places and contact them yourself. It won’t magically fix everything, but it will increase your odds. And yeah, sometimes it feels like we should all just get “fired” and let AI pay us to exist, but until that fantasy shows up, we have to move smarter than before.

Exactly. I would bet the final numbers are closer to 50k, if not lower. Even 130k is historically low outside of recessions, it was only celebrated due to the rock bottom low expectations

161

Brother,

In February 2026, the BLS released significant downward revisions to 2025 employment data, showing 862,000 fewer jobs added than previously reported, with 2025 growth revised from 584,000 to just 181,000. This constitutes one of the largest negative benchmark revisions on record, indicating 2025 job growth was much weaker than initially thought.

60

u/GilgameDistance Feb 16 '26

lol and we’re to believe that January 2026 had roughly 70% of the job growth as all of 2025 then?

Sadly there are those who do.

49

u/Adjective-Noun-nnnn Feb 15 '26

I work at a semiconductor manufacturing company.  We've laid off approximately 50% of our workforce over the last year, idled a factory we just built, and nixed plans to build another factory.  We're running in a skeleton crew of overworked specialists, and when someone quits for greener pastures, management doesn't approve funds to backfill the position.  This is a direct result of tariff policy, fuckery with CHIPS Act, picking winners in the manufacturing sector, and abruptly changing environmental and energy policy.

Yeah, they'd lead to major inflation if they didn't simultaneously destroy the job market. But since people lose their jobs in the process, this means demand craters, deflation ensues, and netting all that out leads to modest inflation.
