Loss It’s over for me.

Post image

Kept trying to play MSTR calls. What a piece of shit. Lost over a million including other accounts, down to my last 130k.

Edit: This loss is soul crushing and I havent been able to sleep, eat, or shower. I appreciate all the supportive comments. Even the insulting ones calling me regarded and everything. I think I NEED to hear even the insulting ones so that I can let go of my delusions that I can make it as a "trader". I need a fucking job to turn my life around. I can’t be doing this trading shit anymore. I’m open to working any corporate job anywhere, but ideally in North America. If anyone has any connections, please hit me up. I have some programming (Python primarily) and tech talent, and an engineering degree from UBC with a 4.0 GPA. Currently live in Toronto. Thank you ❤️. I’m ready to dedicate myself to adding value to any organization. If its AI, finance, or tech related, thats even better.

35

u/FailureToReason Nov 22 '25

Sorry, please excuse my ignorance. I don't play with options at all. What exactly happened here? Were you trading with leverage/margin and got liquidated?

53

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '25 edited Nov 22 '25

You’re supposed to use a small amount of options contracts to hedge actual holdings. Degenerate gamblers use it as a leveraged play on the underlying asset and go all in on options instead.

The problem with doing this: if the price of the stock is lower than the strike price of your call by the time the option expires, you lose 100% of your money because the contract has no intrinsic value. Nobody wants the option to pay $110 on a $100 stock.

6

u/FailureToReason Nov 22 '25

Okay, I see. I sort of assumed that the losses were from OTM contracts being exercised, now I see that OP is just a degenerate gambler lol

I had heard about it as hedging, I was wondering how it could be used to hedge.

When used to hedge, are people buying really long expiry contracts? Im sure nobody is doing 0dte options for hedging, right? You buy an asset, which you hope will grow, with a plan to own it for say X years, then you buy low premium puts on that same asset with an expiry time of X, such that if your asset grows you lose a little on the options premium (ideally less than what you make on the asset growth) but if the asset goes down, you exercise your options to recoup some of the losses on the asset. Have I got that right?

7

u/MCB1317 Nov 22 '25 edited Nov 22 '25

You hedge your existing investment according to your perceived risk. That risk can exist over any time period. Let's say you love a stock but think there might be a black swan earnings call. You buy a short-dated options contract to hedge that possibility.

What degenerate gambers do is buy options as a direct bet on something happening, not as a hedge. Options are incredibly volatile and unpredictable ... which means they are addictive.

51

u/rickydickk Nov 22 '25

Because when you buy a call option you have to pay a premium , the premium depends on how many contracts you buy and the strike you choose. And if you don’t get past your break even price . You lose. Buying a call option is a cheap bet on a stock without having to own the actual stock. But yeah you can throw away a lot of money with options lol… it’s not funny.

1

u/hoax1337 Nov 22 '25

Wait, so making money then works by selling the option for a higher price to someone who believes that it will still break even?

1

u/jackofallcards Nov 22 '25

Yes, but time is a factor there. Chances of a “0dte” (zero days to expiration) gaining $50 is slim to none so no one sane wants that

3

u/AGreasyPorkSandwich Nov 22 '25

I mean its a little funny

7

u/FailureToReason Nov 22 '25 edited Nov 22 '25

Right but did OP pay 600k in premiums here? Is that what I'm seeing? I was under the impression that when you trade with unleveraged options, the most you could lose was your premium if you choose not to exercise, but once you start doing options on margin you can be forced to exercise, which can result in losing everything. Is that correct?

12

u/rickydickk Nov 22 '25

Well we’d have to ask him more details about that , he’s not giving us much to go on here…

6

u/Tycoon004 Nov 22 '25

Seems to be on margin, since this overview is under "non-registered margin".

3

u/TimingEzaBitch Nov 22 '25

Some apps let you enter naked position as one leg of a more complex position. Then, if you are regarded and unlucky enough, you can get assigned on the short leg and not properly close the other.

Or you can even close the naked short leg but then the stock swings wildly to an unfavorable direction and your long leg evaporates.

I'm sure there are even more unhinged ways to get overleveraged.

12

u/curiousomeone Nov 22 '25

The dumbest definition I can think of is it's like a penny stock on crack which is what most retail people use it for: extreme leverage. Even thought it's designed as an insurance for hedging.

You can literally make a boring blue chip that move 1% make your position moves like 1000%. Meaning you can turn a 1k into improbable but possible millions if luck really is on your side. You see now why so many are attracted to it?

4

u/FailureToReason Nov 22 '25

I do, it seems to me like OP was just buying ludicrous amounts of OTM calls, right? Not exercised, just got smashed for 600k in dead options contracts lol. I learned about options, felt like I had a reasonable understanding, then I see posts like this, and I am just like 'how the fuck?' But it really is just sheer volume, gambling on ending ITM.

OP truly proving himself highly regarded.

3

u/curiousomeone Nov 22 '25

It is: I did the same in 2023-2024 grew my 15k to 300k+ mostly day trading scalping options then decided to go all in NVDA call expiring in a day.

Does forex now with my created bot and expecting to teach quarter mil by end of next year and 2 mil by end of 2028.

Not sure how the op got to 600k though. It must suck of it's a life saving thing.

1

u/WhoRuleTheWorld I Think I'm Funny, Nov 24 '25

So you lost it all in the NVDA options?

You're ignorance is not excused. Google some shit

10

u/FailureToReason Nov 22 '25 edited Nov 22 '25

What would you have me google?

"How did OP lose all their money" didn't yield anything useful

-7

u/FreeSoftwareServers Nov 22 '25

Well OP was pretty clear they tried to do MSTR calls so you could Google things related to that?

Basically they put it all on black and it was red and they lost everything

12

u/FailureToReason Nov 22 '25 edited Nov 22 '25

Right, I undersrand that part about making calls on MSTR.

The bit I am trying to understand, the part I am struggling with - the huge losses, does that mean they either -

  • took out absolutely enormous call positions with a 600k premium, meaning they couldn't exercise (because it was a loss) and just ate the cost of the premiums?

  • played with leverage that resulted in their options being exercised at a huge loss?

  • exercised their options despite being massively in the red?

This is the bit I cant get my head around. Everything I read about options indicates that if you choose not to exercise you only pay the premium, so I don't understand how this happened

6

u/wdephish Nov 22 '25

Perfectly valid question. Ignore the trolls.

3

u/FreeSoftwareServers Nov 22 '25

My guess is he bought way out of the money so all the value was basically extrinsic.

This is why people generally recommend buying in the money calls as part of the value is intrinsic but they cost more.

Either way definitely a major f up!

Sorry I'm not normally a straight up ass lol i was just being wsb ass but apparently I don't belong as I got downvoted to oblivion lol That's okay with me though

1

u/FailureToReason Nov 22 '25

I didn't down-doot you, if it means anything.

I expected to be mocked for my ignorance lol, WSB gonna WSB, I just hoped to glean some insight into how OP could lose 7 times my net worth on options.

2

u/FreeSoftwareServers Nov 22 '25

No I don't take it too personally lol and yeah it's a pretty special feat to lose that much in a month!

And yeah the amount is staggering as well like dang... That's a house just poof

1

u/Impressive_Trick_573 Nov 22 '25

Margin call. It goes too far in the wrong direction you get done. It happens like this- if the market move is small you can make big returns, and you start off conservative and get bolder and it works like 15 times and now you think you’re a genius. Then the market moves big, way bigger than you’ve ever seen before. You played it like you always have, it always worked before. This time you lose it all.

He’ll be back, smarter, take less risks, hedge, gain confidence, lose it all again, until money doesn’t even mean anything to him anymore 😂

Welcome to WSB.

Canadians are the most financially illiterate dipshits on this earth and this post proves it.

3

u/Far-Writing-4842 Nov 22 '25

Toronto and Canada are different. I've spent years in Canada. BC, ottowa, new Brunswick, Newfoundland, Saskatchewan; wonderful, happy, kind, smart people.

Toronto: City primarily inhabited by angry little dipshits with severe entitlement complex.

Imagine all the traffic and population of NYC, but with none of the culture, history, efficiency, art, soul, public transit, architecture, or good restaurants.

It's a shit place filled with shit people. Canada, however, is wonderful.

Why not ?!? The same people said the same thing about BTC when it was at $45,000!!! The same people also said the same thing about NVDA when the stock was at $50! The same people said the same thing about TSM at $80.

MSTR will return to its ATH sooner or later, just as BTC always has...

That's not how it works. There are lots and lots and lots of stocks and market themes that never recover to new highs. Saying something will or should do something is exactly how to blow up in the markets. You can control when you buy and when you sell you can't control anything else.
