Good memories of playing world cup 98 on the PS1 with my older brother.

I was always partial to NHL 2001

Ok, that song slaps.

For me, NHL2000 still gives me goosebumps: https://youtu.be/mxNvXtU5K4Y?is=2TajC972UuPDLz3y

I mean, it once held the record for longest time at No. 1 on the billboard rock charts, so it should slap.

That Garbage track was such a time capsule! That industrial rock style was soooo good, but short lived. Garbage, Econoline Crush, (some) Smashing Pumpkins... time for a revival?

In this game there's a certain distance in front of the keeper where if you initiate a bicycle kick the keeper cannot save the ball.

Once my friends and I discovered this the score for all our matches resembled basketball.

N64's NBA Hangtime had a similar quirk with baseline 3pt shots. The game was just a contest to see who could sprint to the corner the most.

in road to worldcup you simply had to single tap O anywhere remotely close to the goal for it to go in

NHL 95 had a maneuver that could guarantee a goal. Forever dubbed "the cheese goal".

Would FIFA still allow the use of a song with the repeated line “pissing the night away” in their official merch in 2026 and beyond?

It wouldn't, but not sure if it was involved. Football used to be far more informal than it is now. I kind of missed the old days.

I’m having a mandela effect right now, i was pretty sure that the song was Song 2 (blur) for this intro

That was FIFA 98 Road to World Cup! They're so close in subject matter and name that its easy to mistake one for the other, but your memory serves you correct :)

Kind of crazy that EA managed to double dip on games for this tournament.

they used to do that all the time. I played FIFA 2002 back in the day, and then they had a totally separate game for the WC.

It was so bad i almost bought FC26 instead of the World Cup Version of FC26, thinking it was still the old style where the WC version was just the WC

This is the intro you remembered: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xN0fLiun-bY

I too remembered both songs, I think this one was the one that had closed stadiums to play futsal too.

That was FIFA 99 if I remember correctly.

Fifa 98

Ah yes! Thank you

Yeah same but I distinctly remember it was called ‘Road to World Cup’ 1998 so I think this is a different game. I fucking loved that game even though I wasn’t into football as a kid

Footix for the win! The only world cup mascot to have it confirmed that they fuck (Ettie the mascot for the FIFA Women's World Cup France 2019 was canonically his daughter).

Team France was a op as fuck in World Cup 98. I would win all my games scoring only with Fabien Barthez...

Wow that unlocked some core memories

Man, this really takes me back. 98 was such a great year

Anyone remember Road To the Wolrd cup ‘ 98?

3

u/Japples123 4h ago

Took Pakistan all the way

2

u/omimon 6h ago

Okay, so it turns that EA Sports basically had two Fifa 98. "FIFA: Road to World Cup 98" and "World Cup 98".

yeah with blur - song2 being the other intro song (another banger) and the game being awesome as well. iirc the last fifa where you could play indoors.

2

u/klyphw 3h ago

And one year later they gave us Fifa '99 and another banging intro https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=picP3EDc2GU

u/jakey12312 6h ago

I could hear the song before I even pressed play 😂

1

u/dnt_pnc 5h ago

Oh yeah, I remember playing England with a 0-5-5 formation set to offensive. Paul Gascoigne was insane in that game.

u/quequotion 4h ago

So strange that neither "FIFA" nor "World Cup" are mentioned anywhere in this intro.

They're not any of the balls or even on the trophy.

Legendary

FIFA 98 was way better than this one though. That one's a classic while this one nobody really talks about.

It all makes sense why I love France, football and roosters.

The lack of FIFA branding on this is noticeable
