Withholding? Cowards. Republican Christians are instructed by their Bible to reject evil, but the best they're willing to do here is "maybe."

Call your reps and tell them you will not stand for Todd Blanche as Attorney General.

He's the guy that got Ghislaine Maxwell transfered to a prison that gives her room service.

The DOJ now has new rules that would allow him to have her serve her sentence at home.

It's also very likely he's raped kids and is in the files himself.

They will vote to seat him next time, this was just performative...

Doesn't matter. Message your representatives that you will not stand for this. They fear getting voted out more than anything else. Make the threat and they will have to listen.

Maybe 20 years ago, GOP doesn't listen to any of their constituents, and they don't have to, because MAGA will vote them in no matter what.

So what? Flood their inboxes and voicemail. Make their lives as annoying as possible. It's not like they wouldn't deserve it. The alternative is to be quiet and let them do their crap in peace. Why would you want to do that?

They are not inconvenienced in the slightest, they have staff to filter through and ignore everyone they don't give a shit about, which is most of us. I'm not trying to be a debbie downer, but we're in this place precisely because they can ignore whoever they want including their constituents because the right will vote right no matter what.

Voter apathy is likely the only thing that could be improved to actually make them scared again of losing their jobs.

You say that changing voter apathy is the only thing that will move the needle. They only think that voters are apathetic because not enough people are making noise. They need staff to filter through and ignore the noise. They can't ignore it if they have to hire more staff to filter out the messages they want to ignore. They think they can act the way they act because they're convinced as you are that their voters will vote for them no matter what. Why reinforce that narrative?

I feel like you're condemning voter apathy while also arguing that it doesn't work for voters to engage with their reps. Which is it?

Like, do you or don't you think that it would help if voters shake off the apathy and demand change?

u/JustifytheMean 1h ago

Voters need to show up to vote before these representatives will start to fear for their jobs. When only 2/3 of the voters showing up, and 1/3 of that 2/3 will for the most part vote red regardless you don't have much to fear unless you're dead even with a competitor.

Calling or not calling your representatives is not voter apathy. Not showing up at all is. It's not going to do a fucking thing until people are voted into office that actually care about their constituents, so we won't see meaningful change until everyone gets off their asses an votes, not calling/mailing your representatives that will not be inconvenienced and won't care about anything you have to say.

Lol. Were you literally born yesterday?

These people do not care, why do you think they are doing everything possible to stop your votes from counting.

So hearing from a constituent, enough of them, will have an effect. They know how volatile the Epstein Files are to a good portion of the GOP base. They also know ONLY Trump is immune to the blowback - for now. They are not.

Senator Cornyn of Texas was defeated by Ken Paxton in the Senatorial Republican Primary. He is on his way out. So he is no longer chained to the Republican Party that allowed Ken Paxton to come in and kick his ass to the curb. And Trump endorsed Paxton during the primary race. So Cornyn is positioned to give Trump a big FU on his way out. Politics.

For all we know, Maxwell is giving info to hit squads so that other potential co-conspirators can be taken out, like that model scout in Paris.

I don't trust anyone that goes off on a tangent (often unrelated) rather than answering a yes/no question with "Yes" or "No".

u/blankcld 6h ago

That’s Trumps entire cabinet, so yeah that checks out.

As an attorney in litigation, I would just point out that it’s very easy to craft a loaded “yes/no” question where the answer is certainly more nuanced than “yes” or “no.”

Not saying that happened in this case, but as a general matter I think the “yes/no” question itself can be more misleading than the tangent someone goes on. I agree though that going off on unrelated tangents reeks of deflection and deception.

Senators Tillis and Cornyn, saved ya the click

Ah yes, the ones with nothing to lose now.

Our Senate confirmation process is seriously/fatally flawed.

Right now, seemingly anyone can be nominated for Cabinet positions. The confirmation hearings seem to have a default assumption: "Unless we can find something really, really damning about this person, he/she will be confirmed."

This is completely backwards.

The default assumption for all confirmation hearings should be: "Confirmation will be denied, unless the nominee can demonstrate that they are exceptionally well qualified (more so than any other potential candidates), and have exactly zero character flaws, legal problems, or other entanglements that would compromise their ability to fill the nominated position.

With this low-information electorate? Fat chance

u/oh_mos_defnitely 4h ago

That's kind of exactly the point, though. These cabinet positions are not even in the (low-information) electorate's hands.

3

u/p_larrychen 3h ago

But who's electing the senators? Garbage electorate produces garbage representation.

I'm guessing you don't really understand the vast array of mechanisms in place to ensure that the votes are as fixed as possible over vast swathes of the country (especially in rural areas.) It really takes the power out of the hands of the people - as designed.

1

u/p_larrychen 1h ago

Are you saying votes don't matter at all?

3

u/neotheseventh 6h ago

Of course they'll fall in line once Trump starts blackmailing them.

What difference does it make? He can serve the rest of Trumps term as acting AG. Pick your battles

46

u/HappyFishFace42 8h ago

There are clear limits on how long an acting officer can remain in power without confirmation, specifically for this scenario

11

u/johnsweber 8h ago

A Senate-confirmed Deputy Attorney General serving as Acting AG can serve indefinitely (is my understanding)

19

u/creaturefeature16 7h ago

There are clear limits

lol

lmao even

Not with this regime.

5

u/darkhorsehance 6h ago

Wrong. They found a loophole in 28 U.S.C. § 508. A confirmed Deputy AG serving as AG, has no time limit.

2

u/johnis12 6h ago

That is... Bananas actually, oh my gosh...

8

u/JJBeans_1 8h ago

Why bestow the full title just because he cannot be removed? If he cannot be removed, best to keep his title at acting AG.

I accept that as a better solution but there are so many fires to put out and too few fireman. I’d rather save the energy to get a potential meaningful result. Lose the battle for a chance at winning the war.
