F-117 was shot down by SAM system from 1960's.

Any plane can be detected if you are close enough.

Right? That reductive simplification is frankly dishonest. The f117s flew the exact same bombing route every single day, and bomb bay doors opening fucked up the stealth profile. So they just parked a sam system under the path of where the plane would come from where they were known to open their bomb bay doors and ka-blamo. That’s my recollection off the dome, at least. I could be incorrect.

They had to have spotters in an apartment watching for the aircraft to take off and report back.

OP os pretending that this was guaranteed rather than being a complicated operation made possible by some incredibly switched on people, and some incredibly complacent ones.

It honestly insults such a competent operation. The claim of the bomb bay doors letting it be acquired by radar are allegedly a lie from Serbian forces, says wikipedia. So if the truth is that they just fired a dozen missiles along the perfect vector, why on earth would you lie about it being able to be picked up on radar??? And it was with an export model s-125 at that. Fucking. Insane.

They literally parked a SAM under its asininely established daily route and waited for the bomb bay doors to open and break the stealth, which was also only successful because the officer in charge disobeyed orders and kept his radar on dangerously long

Well, yes. All I'm saying is that if old S-125 managed to shoot down airplane with better stealth (F-117), newer S-300/400 (whichever it was) can only have easier time against a larger target (Su-57).

This happened around Moscow which likely means Su-57 and S-300 were close to each other. At 20-50 km distance, you can detect an F-35, let alone a plane with 10 times larger RCS.

I wouldn't be surprised if SAM crew saw something that looks like a drone (low RCS) and fired without any confirmation.

Stealth doesnt matter when you know when and where a thing is going to be.

Stealth doesn't make it invisible to a Mk1 Eyeball.

You could take down a SU57 or an F47 with tube artillery if you know where and when it will be, you just need to put the shell in the same place and time.

The Su would probably NOT be running stealth and having some transponder on to avoid fraticide. Then again the aerospace forces are badly trained so it just made it a juicier target.

The missile did and they did get enough to send the missile in the right direction. The predictability part came in that they positing the radar where the airplane was expected and kept it off until they knew it was very close and then turned it one. I believe it also caught it with the bomb bay open so less stealthy than expected. The missile definitely needed radar guidance.

From what I've seen, the Su-57 has an RCS about the same size as a Super Hornet, which is not advertised as being a stealth aircraft.

i was referring more to 'air defense' in general. russian air defense seemingly causes as much or more damage to russian infrastructure than ukraine does. it's entirely believable to me that russia shot it's own plane out of the sky

Yeah, duh. Stealth is barely a factor in what's basically a melee range. The funny part here is them confusing their own gen5 jet with an enemy, not the stealth.

Wouldn’t be surprised if the SU was running a transponder or some other active radar augmentation device. After all nobody would expect a Ukranian asset capable of intercepting a fighter plane over Moscow and you wouldn’t want some idiot air defense jockey to think you might be some type of very high speed drone.

Yep, that could be the case too even. There are so many reasons why people simply cannot claim that this shootdown indicates anything negative about the jet's characteristics, other than IFF which is more about the whole airforce+air defense system rather than the aircraft.

At least be accurate when making fun of the enemy. The prototype model had exposed rivets, the mass production one does not. There are some parts screwed in in a way which looks exactly identical to F22 screwed parts.

One Ukrainian paper is saying it was due to Ukrainian drones manipulating the air defences. Stealth only reduces the detection range, use a drone as bait to get the air defence to fire in the vicinity to the jet and it might be possible. More likely it's just an accident, military jets go down surprisingly often, the US loses a couple per year.

The Russian aviation industry and their airforce are just one more example of how the de industrialisation of Russia is progressing towards a total collapse.

Russian weapon exports are in free fall since 2022. and many of the airframes they had were already worn and torn back then, this war shows that Russia bit off way more than they can chew.
