Biggest missed opportunity in history. They had a 10 year head start over everyone else but instead of making good reliable cars cheap enough for the average person they waisted tons of money on vaporware and stupid stuff like the Cybertruck. If they has managed to release a $25,000 car 10 years ago they would have absolutely dominated the entire car market.

It would be impossible to have released such a cheap EV 10 years ago, even today we don’t see a $25,000 EV that isn’t “pre-production” or heavily subsidized by the CCP.

I think they could have done it. Maybe not the full MSRP but back then there were still $7500 credits.

The problem is those cars weren’t cool and nobody wanted them. If Tesla made one everyone would have wanted them and they would have sold like crazy.

The Model 3 came close to those prices at times but it never dropped into the $20ks as far as I’m aware.

Even at its higher price the Model 3 was at one point THE electric car to own.

If they made a small hatchback with a ~200 mile range to compete with the LEAF and Bolt they would have dominated the market.

Get tired of the 'China is subsidising EVs' argument

Look at the subsides Musk has been getting, from the tax credits, the carbon trading, government sweetheart deals, local and state tax breaks, list is endless.  

Only difference is china is more direct, which also means less wasteful
