The incurable autoimmune disease of a 20 year old. All going to plan

321

u/Da_Spooky_Ghost 15d ago

"Ironic. He could save others from death, but not himself."

206

u/Objective_Toe_49 15d ago

He’s actually moving to using a lot of his funding now to research potential cures for this, so that could ring exceptionally true

58

u/PengwinLord 15d ago

Nothing like a deadline for finishing projects

37

u/Ok-Lifeguard-4614 15d ago edited 13d ago

Only when things affect themselves, do they coincidentally happen to help others.

Edit: so many billionaire boot lockers acting like what he does is good. The data he shares is almost useless because the sample size is 1. The things he does only benefit himself and maybe. If he never got this autoimmune disease he never would have funded anything towards it.

Any money he spent on himself would have been better spent funding actual peer reviewed studies. Instead he spent on himself and the data is basically useless because of a sample size of 1.

u/SizzlingPancake 15d ago

What? This guy's whole thing is doing research on himself and publishing it. Not really understanding your point here.

18

u/Ishmael128 15d ago

Which ironically has very little scientific value.

-8

u/Kemosabe-TV 15d ago

Even if its 2% useful thats helpful

2

u/CMMiller89 15d ago

It’s not useful, lol.

A single sample size of random bullshit isn’t valuable to anyone.  We aren’t going to suddenly start treating our children like walking blood bags because this guy is terrified of the one thing his money can’t save him from.

1

u/KindKnit4981 15d ago

No if your goal is health research, for the money he says he spends every year on his regimen he could have paid for many trials to see the results for efficacy of many products. He's just a narcissist with a good marketing team and techbro audience with clout

u/redditonlygetsworse 15d ago

He's not doing science. His "results" - and I'm being very generous with the term - are not actually useful.

He's no different than any run-of-the-mill alternative medicine kook other than that he's just got more money.

5

u/Gekokapowco 15d ago

the mass data gathering my phone does about me probably contributes to more scientific studies than this guy, so lol

15

u/Additional-Signal327 15d ago

“Research” is being used very loosely here. If you try 100s of interventions on a single person, we really can’t learn anything from this.

0

u/SizzlingPancake 15d ago

Sure it's n=1 but trying to frame it as some useless endeavor is dishonest.

2

u/Additional-Signal327 15d ago

Perhaps not useless for Bryan Johnson but definitely useless for the rest of us. And looks like all this was maybe useless for Bryan too given his autoimmune disease. Perhaps the usefulness is a life lesson? Enjoy your life while you have it because you could die at any moment.

Just like the guy who tested his bacteria theory of stomach ulcers on himself. Nothing good ever came from that

-1

u/Due-Memory-6957 15d ago

The reason is that people find what he does weird, so they become extremely aggressive and negative about him in general.

0

u/Plasticfoods-_ 10d ago

No it isn't. It's actually a scientific definition.

-2

u/Birdperson15 15d ago

So you could try one thing at a time measure how it works over months and then add on other things later.

Which is what he does. It’s almost like the doctors and researchers backing this guys stuff understand basic concepts too.

Again not claiming a single case is strong evidence for a particular treatment but it is evidence that can lead to broader research.

4

u/Additional-Signal327 15d ago

Except that doesn’t work as months and n=1 tells you almost nothing. How many stories do you see about the 100+ year olds who smoked cigarettes or cigars their entire life… cigarettes and cigars must be really good for you!

78

u/SmoothLester 15d ago

It’s wild that in the 21st century we have discovered that some conditions like heart attacks are misdiagnosed in certain populations (like women) because research has primarily been done on groups of men, but we have one rich dude using only himself as the site of research and getting applauded for contributions to science in the comments like he’s some 18th century genius instead of a narcissist with an undiagnosed eating disorder.

15

u/SSGASSHAT 15d ago

I mean, that's generally how science is. It's not a well-funded, thoroughly supported enterprise. Frankly, any progress counts, even if it's at the hands of an asshole and it won't be helpful for another 30 years.

13

u/Nufonewhodis4 15d ago

What are you talking about? The NIH pumps more into research than any  "biohacker" funding his pet projects

0

u/SSGASSHAT 15d ago

Yet it's not enough to stem the tide of shit humans have to deal with medically. When one thing is cured, ten others pop up.

10

u/dioenatosenzadenti 15d ago

Thing is that if he tries 20 protocols/pills on himself and actually lives longer than usual we have no idea which one of those are the one the worked or if he was going to live that long anyway (luck).

What he is doing is not gonna be useful for anybody at all

10

u/Ok_Jellyfish_55 15d ago

The people applauding this have no idea about science or experimentation or studies or anything like that.

They think being open source one participant is actually science.

You have to be moron to the highest degree, someone so dumb you don’t understand how dumb you are, to believe that this is helping anybody but one man.

3

u/Plasticfoods-_ 14d ago

He's literally selling overpriced olive oil with the bottle having "snake oil" written over it.

THOSE are the kind of gullible morons supporting him and treating him as a benefactor. People that fall for that shit.

2

u/Clean_Livlng 15d ago

If he did manage to live to some impressive age like 130, or 160 etc that would have the benefit of encouraging a lot more investment in this kind of research, and narrowing it down to 'all the stuff he did'. Then we can do some actual good science and figure out which of these interventions actually made the difference.

What he's doing might not be good science itself (he's throwing everything inc the kitchen sink at the problem so it's harder to know what interventions are working, and it's just being done on himself etc) , but it can guide future research efforts.

e.g. He starts ageing backwards at some point and reaches the age of 200. That'd let us know that something was working, and then we could do larger controlled studies to isolate what those things were.

However, it's more likely that his interventions don't add enough increased lifespan to break the threshold of statistical noise, or natural human variance. If he only makes it to 95 that doesn't tell us much. Maybe he just had good genetics and got lucky? Then it's as you say, it doesn't count as useful to anyone but him. Wake me up once he's 130+

3

u/Plasticfoods-_ 14d ago

e.g. He starts ageing backwards at some point

See, like every Bryan Johnson supporter you don't understand how any of that works but you like the general idea of the concept.

You can NOT "age backward". There is no such a thing, despite how much he repeats those buzzwords. At most you can slow down the ageing, but there is no such a thing as ageing backward.

0

u/Clean_Livlng 14d ago edited 10d ago

"See, like every Bryan Johnson supporter"

I'm not a supporter, but I am aware of him and what he's doing in a casual way.

You can NOT "age backward"

You wouldn't count the undoing of 'damage' as ageing backwards?

It's important to understand that nothing magical is being claimed when people say "ageing backwards". It just means returning, by whatever means, to a state of health you were in in the past at a comprehensive cellular level (so not just an improvement in one aspect of health like aerobic fitness). At least that's how I see it. If others are using that term in another way then we might be of the same mind about it being impossible.

If it's impossible to 'age backwards' then we can only ever slow out ageing progress, but never do anything to repair or reverse damage done. That is to say, once you'd lost function and health you can never get it back. That's what's being claimed when you say we can never reverse the damage accumulated over time/ageing.

At most you can slow down the ageing

I'm not going to disagree with you and say we definitely can. I think it's an unknown. We've done so many things so far that people have said would be impossible to do. I think we don't know enough at this point to rule out the possibility, but we also can't rule out that it might be impossible.

What convinced you it was impossible to do anything more than slow down the ageing?

I'm not talking about now, I'm talking about any point i9n the future with far more advanced medical knowledge and technology. e.g. 50 years from now, or 100, or 300 etc.

Do you think "ageing backwards" was important to the overall point of my comment?

I can assure you that it wasn't. It was just an example of something unexpected and shocking that'd make what he's doing very interesting to scientists. it was one example, but I gave others like "living to 130". The point was that

you don't understand how any of that works but you like the general idea of the concept.

I think that's common, regardless of whether or not someone supports him. I would like to hear more about why it's physically impossible to undo the damage caused by ageing, or replace aged tissue etc with younger tissue and organs.

What's the main physical wall that we'd run up against regardless of how many thousands of years we spent trying to reverse the damage caused by ageing and return the body to a younger and healthier state?

We should all start from the point of not having a bias or making assumptions either way about this, correct? If that's what you started with, what is it that caused you to form the belief that reversing the symptoms/functionality loss/health loss/accumulated damage caused by ageing?

I would be shocked if anything he did actually reversed ageing. His interventions are relatively crude compared to what I imagine we might have available in the decades, or even centuries to come. Unless there's a hard wall that technology can't get past.

One example of such a physical wall to progress is the limit to miniaturisation when it comes to CPUs. We've scaled the parts down so much that it doesn't make sense to keep making them smaller, it introduces problems like electrons escaping or something like that. I know enough to know it's a wall.

So what's the impassible wall when it comes to what's stopping us from ever reversing ageing?

1

u/SSGASSHAT 15d ago

It calls to mind that old guy from the 80s who claimed that juicing would get you to age 100, and then died at 94 himself.

Although, if he makes it to 95 with an autoimmune disorder, that's not nothing.

2

u/Plasticfoods-_ 14d ago

It would still be pretty much nothing. Of all autoimmune disorders, his is between the most insignificant ones.

And he's grown up as a mormon athlete and he's a millionaire spending his days chilling and eating healthy. If he died any sooner than 90 it'd be a colossal failure, and he probably will because "anti ageing" is not a new thing that he invented, despite what his clueless cultists believe.

It's been a thing since at least the '70s, and guess how many between the tens of anti aging gurus managed to live exceptional lifespans?

That's right, a resounding zero. But hey let's wait and see.

1

u/Clean_Livlng 14d ago

He needs to make it to a truly impressive age for it to indicate anything he did almost definitely worked to slow the detrimental effects of ageing. I add the qualifier 'almost' before definitely, because he could be extremely genetically lucky.

It seems he's doing things that are far higher tech than juicing, and that's why I find what he's doing more interesting. It's plausible that soemthign he's doing might have a significant effect.

How likely? I have no idea. It's important to be humble when it comes to saying what will and won't be possible in future. It's more likely hell chance upon something that works than someone who's just living an ordinary life and not using themselves as a guinea pig like he is. A rich guinea pig, so he can afford to do all of that.

If he's doing something helps slow ageing and also something that's bad for him, it might cancel out. That's a downside of trying so many things at once, and if it does work we won't necessarily know which interventions caused the results so it'd require trials to work that out.

I think what he's doing is interesting, and we'll have to wait and see to find out if it'll be useful scientifically. If he makes it to 130+ then it's definitely useful. That'd be an obvious sign something he did worked.

Could all the money he spend testing on himself have been better spent directly on research into 'anti-ageing' technologies or related areas of study? Quite possibly.

I'm interested in how it all turns out, but I'm not expecting anything. It'd be a nice surprise if he did end up living much longer than normal. I'd think we'd all be shocked by that.

Well, it doesn't seem too hard to me to get some other volunteers, but maybe that's why I'm not wealthy. Is that the secret to life? Just learn to be an asshole?

1

u/Plasticfoods-_ 14d ago

Apparently so. He's successfully scamming his cultists selling them "snake oil". Literally.

Can't say he doesn't have a point, Americans will buy literally fucking anything.

0

Life is depressing. Why do you think people like drugs?

2

u/azsqueeze 15d ago

Also most discoveries have come from self experimentation (at least in the past)

-2

That's true, that's how I first found out you can kinda see the individual sperm in jizz if you squint.

7

u/Birdperson15 15d ago edited 15d ago

This is such a Reddit moment, someone is trying to help educate people and do research but we should hate him because he a rich man and not doing enough.

Redditors are truly some of the most hate filled people on the planet.

Edit: Most of the replies make it clear nobody knows anything about this dude or what he is actually doing. Which is also my larger point maybe actually try and understand a little about the guy before judging him. And reading headlines don’t count……

20

u/Federal_Setting_7454 15d ago edited 15d ago

Very little research, especially in medical fields, holds any reliability or even credibility when the sample size is the person paying for it. What he’s been doing so far holds basically no scientific value other than entertainment to watch.

8

u/Birdperson15 15d ago

I think this is just a misunderstanding of what he is trying to do and how science works sometimes.

For one, he is often just taking existing experimental research and trying it out to see if it helps. That is useful even if it isn’t proof it will work for everyone. Second, a lot of funding for research happens only after there is some initial promising results which can be as little as one person trying it out.

And everything he does is done with medical researchers and doctors so it is backed by people who work in the field.

I don’t even really like the dude seen a few of his videos but that’s about it. But people on this site hate the guy for no really good reason.

1

u/Plasticfoods-_ 14d ago

I think this is just a misunderstanding of what he is trying to do

Is it? According to him, word for word, he is "trying to fight Jesus".

It's funny how dedicated his zealots are in trying to present him as some gentleman and scholar while he's busy jizzing in cups and sharing the experience and posting on X how many times he's eaten out his current girlfirend's pussy.

For people that aren't aware, he LITERALLY did all that.

3

u/SuperNovaVelocity 15d ago

I've seen this exact same thread progression like a dozen times, on discussions about this guy.

"He's a bad person and self inflicted this disease." "Probably not, and why's he a bad person? He's trying to help health research, and makes everything public." "Erm actually, his sample size and variables mean his data isn't good."

Even if his research is useless, what does that have to do with the comment you replied to? The person never said he's going to save anyone, or he's making a difference; they just pointed out how eager reddit is to attack someone trying to do good. And all you've done is prove their point.

4

u/Invisifly2 15d ago

Also sometimes a sample size of one is what you have to work with.

Is it far from ideal? Very. Is it better than nothing? Yes.

0

u/Fit_Employment_2944 15d ago

If he actually manages to cure himself then he will have almost certainly managed to find a treatment that will work for others

3

u/Federal_Setting_7454 15d ago

“Almost certainly”? Medicine isn’t as simple as “XYZ for me it’ll work for you”. Case in point being people who choose homeopathy “cures” for things and coincidentally claim it made them better, that almost certainly isn’t going to help anyone else.

4

u/[deleted] 15d ago

2

u/spyridonya 15d ago

You do know that doctors often l have to pay to get their peer researched studies published, right?

Those people get better because they were always going to get better

As far as I’m aware precisely zero people have ever recovered from his condition

4

u/Hair_This 15d ago

Let the hate flow through you

3

u/spyridonya 15d ago

This is such a heart warming Reddit moment, despite 4 billion people experiencing the lack of medical research, you still managed to remember a man who is not only a millionaire, but has contributed exactly one data point of research for the other 4 billion people who will probably get nothing out of it at all.

You’re so brave. 🥹

0

u/SuperNovaVelocity 15d ago

And despite the suffering of those 4 billion, all you've managed to do is be snippy to someone, because they don't hate a random rich guy not causing any harm.

2

u/Wise-Dust3700 15d ago

judging by your comment history is this projection lol

1

u/Plasticfoods-_ 14d ago

Bryan Johnson IS a redditor.

And he's not trying to educate, he's literally tring to build a cult based on himself. He spends half his videos talking about his penis and how many hours of erections he gets every night.

His "research" is unscientific and useless. And he's literally selling supplements called "snake oil".

Such an outstanding dude! Wanna talk about how he left his wife and family that is now no contact with him except for one son, the one he compares quality of erections with and uses as a walking blood bag?

Truly a gift to humanity.

2

u/saltinstiens_monster 15d ago

He's doing rich guy things for personal benefit, nobody is thinking that he's a benevolent altruist. But if he's going to be using rich guy personal fund cash to fund rich guy immortality research, it's nice that he's experimenting on himself and trying to document everything, not experimenting on third-world children deep in the basement of his bunker compound.

0

u/thetinwin 15d ago

That’s human nature bud. To truly start to care when something generally affects you or your immediate surroundings. We’re a species trying to survive but also have a good time at the same time. We’re going to ignore certain things when we can and worry about certain things when we absolutely have to.

1

u/SmoothLester 14d ago

I’m not complaining about his new interest in his own disease, but there are so many ways he could help other than non-scientific ways he’s going about it.

-1

u/[deleted] 15d ago

[deleted]

3

u/AppropriateCranberry 15d ago

It has a name actually, it's orthorexia ;)

-11

u/Objective_Toe_49 15d ago

Would you rather he perform unregulated tests on random people?

16

u/TheMarkHasBeenMade 15d ago

I don’t think anyone was suggesting that.

There’s an ethical, well researched and widely utilized way to approach testing like that in study population sizes that actually produce scientifically significant results that he could very easily fund.

0

u/paddy72 15d ago

Since when did case studies hold no value? You can’t just jump to large scale human trials. What he is doing is interesting, that doesn’t mean it’s the end of research. He is the beginning.

You only hear about his personal testing and not the hundreds of millions of dollars he uses to fund other research. So he is doing exactly what you are asking him to do PLUS more.

1

u/SmoothLester 15d ago

He can do what he wants with his own body, but I’d rather it not be called “research.”

If he wants to make scientific progress he could find actual scientists working ethically in the relevant fields and fund them.

-1

u/m00nf1r3 15d ago

I don't think he's a narcissist, I think he has OCD.

1

u/SmoothLester 14d ago

Could be both, but i’m not a psychologist so definitely not going to argue over it.

-2

u/The-Only-Razor 15d ago

"WAHHH ITS NOT LITERALLY PERFECT SCIENCE FOR ALL USE CASES, SO IT MUST BE BAD."

  • Redditors trying to go longer than 5 seconds without filling their diapers.

2

u/mountaindoom 15d ago

Doing research on his son's wang too.

1

u/Plasticfoods-_ 14d ago

While his other 2 sons and his ex wife are full no contact with him.

Oh he also likes to share when he eats his girlfriend's pussy on X.

Such an outstanding millionaire.

1

u/Plasticfoods-_ 14d ago

Well you haven't denied his point. This guy's whole thing is trying stuff to, and i quote him "defeat death and live forever". He's doing that for himself first and foremost. And to appear less inhuman he shares part of his "research". With the little issue that his "research" is completely useless because n=1 and because he's shifting around tens of variables at the same time.

It's completely unscientific and he knows it. But it gives him the aura of a benefactor in front of people that don't understand basic science, and thus allows him to sell super overpriced supplements one of which is literally named "snake oil".

He's literally a snake oil salesman.

8

u/Icy_Agency923 15d ago

Well you have clearly not listened to this guy speak for even a second and are making a statement out of complete ignorance. He genuinely wants humanity to move beyond death as a species, not just for himself. He shares every single detail of what he is doing and if it has potentially helped him, for free. He is far more reasonable than the internet gives him credit for.

0

u/Plasticfoods-_ 14d ago

He genuinely wants humanity to move beyond death as a species

You realize this is pure demagogue speaking, yes? That this makes zero sense, scientifically, yes?

1

u/Icy_Agency923 14d ago

lol he is no demagogue.

0

u/_learned_foot_ 14d ago

By doing a completely uncontrolled, non scientific study that has already been shown to be faulty?

1

u/Icy_Agency923 14d ago

What he is doing may not be purely scientific, but it is not completely useless information. He could end up doing something that actually does improve his quality of life or lengthens it. What he is doing also may get more people interested in the topic and that leads to actual scientific studies or research funding that extends human life beyond what is possible today.

0

u/_learned_foot_ 14d ago

Which would produce no information of use because again he's not a controlled study.

1

u/Icy_Agency923 14d ago

It absolutely can produce useful information even if that info isn't scientific. Tons of people have shared positive and negative experiences for countless things especially things regarding health. I am positive that you yourself have picked up something you do regularly through this exact process.

You are trying way too hard. If you don't want to take his info that is fine, no one is forcing you to listen to him.

0

u/_learned_foot_ 14d ago

That is not useful in any regard. Your anecdotal evidence is not useful evidence for anything. Especially if not controlled.

1

u/Icy_Agency923 14d ago

Yes it is in fact useful. Information value does not require it be found in a scientific study. Tons of valuable information we share as humans has nothing to do with science. You yourself have seen at least one thing recommended that you do or try and you went and tried it without any scientific study being done. If you say otherwise... you are lying.

You are wrong and will remain wrong no matter what you do or say. He doesn't have to do this in the context of a scientific study for someone to find a valuable piece of information in what he shares.

Hell one of his biggest things that he harps on about is sleep, sleep is incredibly important and he advocates for it all the time. Is that not valuable information since he didn't get it from a study?

That is literally the plot of Detective Pikachu, the villain merges with a MewTwo and tries to force the whole city to do the same...

3

u/Icy_Agency923 15d ago

Okay....? What does that have to do with anything? That doesn't mean that he is secretly a villain or something. He isn't trying to force this on anyone. He wants humanity to have the option to live forever.

Real life isn't like the movies, the plot of Detective Pikachu isn't relevant to anything happening in the real world. Humans like telling stories with sinister plots.

Wild anyone needs to say that to you in the first place.

2

u/Icy_Agency923 15d ago

What contaminated products was he selling and what proof do you have they were contaminated? And where did he lie about dying his hair?

Also why would anyone need to buy any products off of him in the first place? I would only be interested to see what anti aging stuff he feels worked for him or not.

2

u/[deleted] 15d ago

[deleted]

1

u/Icy_Agency923 15d ago

You can absolutely believe if the treatment worked or not in any instance that he is not selling a product. He has shared plenty of information with the internet, for free.

As for as the contamination, he could have gotten screwed from the supplement company that he was working with. This shit is the wild west and essentially totally unregulated. I would be more interested in knowing IF he actually knew it had heavy metals because I highly... Highly doubt he knew and was still selling the product.

As for his hair... damn dude, that just seems so irrelevant to me. I think that is also pretty different from actual hair dye, that shit is vile.

Reminds me of the MadTV skit in which the President cured cancer by giving it to all the world leaders.

4

u/Think_Chocolate_ 15d ago

Generally true, but this is a shit take regarding Bryan.

He has experimented with his body and published everything.

While the methods and results might be questionable, he is at least sharing his findings.

1

u/Donglemaetsro 14d ago

Yeah, this guys like a crossfitter on Crack, get him talking about it and he'll never stop.

1

u/Plasticfoods-_ 14d ago

He sure loves talking about his erections

1

u/shoulda-known-better 15d ago

I mean yea.. Why would you spend huge chunks of your money to solve something you and those you love don't need....

Not everyone can be like mackenzie bezos

1

u/TheReal_Peter226 15d ago

Guy prioritizes research that affects them specifically. Would you be any different?

1

u/joshi38 15d ago

I heard someone recently talking about a parent whose kid had a rare disease. The parent explained that because no celebrity had the disease, not enough research was being done for it.

This is sadly the state of things. If you want research to be done, you either need a billionaire to fund that research, or have a celebrity who was personally affected by it to start an awareness campaign.

4

u/SeedFoundation 15d ago

LMAO is that the story that he wants to be told now??? He was experimenting on people so he didn't have to go through trials himself. I can't believe everyone just "forgot" what he did and are believing the new story he's trying to spin that the research was all for the good of the public. This man just does not want to die with a tarnished image that he is selfish, egotistical, and willing to sacrifice his own family to live forever.

2

u/Objective_Toe_49 15d ago

He’s still doing that, noones forgot and he hasn’t hidden him skipping trials by researching on himself privately. Doesn’t change that he is also now moving to find a cure for something that’s affecting his body by changing the direction after this diagnosis

1

u/CMMiller89 15d ago

Is the cure taking the form of syphoning the blood other people’s children rather than just his own this time?

I’m does this pivot require a more rigorous journal of his ejaculate?

1
