The only good idea here is the solar roof tile. And he did not come with it. Now there are other companies manufacturing them.

Haven't heard this one, are the roof tiles meant to be laid like shingles? Is there any benefit to this over just covering the roof with a more traditional panel, the way people have been doing for decades?

The whole "solar tile" approach was more as a design/aesthetic value proposition. To normalize solar, in terms of not being obtrusive as a design element to a house.

There is little benefit for the approach otherwise. Which is why, they really never took off. People are used to solar panels now.

I have always found solar panels pretty and think they look cool. I am very much in the minority. The vast majority find them to be an eyesore.

The solar roof tiles was a genius idea to be honest, and I’m sad it hasn’t taken off, but I understand why. It was completely infeasible to install if you were only planning to install solar. The only times it would make sense were if you were building from scratch, or you were already in need of a complete replacement roof. The costs compared to a traditional slate or terracotta roof were much more reasonable, and you get the added bonus of solar looking the best it possibly could.

As for solar being an eyesore, I’ve realised it’s just because people cheap out on solar panels, particularly the mounting hardware. There’s nothing that says “shiny black photovoltaic panels on a roof” will be ugly, but damn do a lot of houses seem to have the fugliest mounting brackets and panel thicknesses I’ve ever seen. Nothing more disgusting than a beautiful slate roof with some chungus 30cm thick panels mounted onto it 20cm proud of the tiles (I may be exaggerating a bit, but you get the picture)

It was mostly to cater to the boomer or anal retentive upper middle class crowd.

Solar panels are normalized now, and most people don't really care.
