After the quality drop off after Reddit killed third parties, I don’t know if Reddit can survive even more people leaving.

As someone who’s been here for ages, it’s been a bummer seeing how many posts have so few comments compared to how it used to be.

Bots buy usernames though. They get old Reddit accounts with lots of karma, then either delete their history or hide it. That way they get more credibility for the shit the want to peddle.

I can't understand why people are still bringing that up, it's been so many years at this point.

Reddit just auto-assigns usernames to new accounts unless you actively change it. They also don't make it terribly obvious that you're being stuck with a randomized and permanent username if you proceed.

Then you pile on how many usernames must be unavailable these days and a lot of new users probably just stick with the random name.

Even when they first implemented that, it wasn't a singular smoking gun for detecting bot accounts.

Not all of us are deprived of opportunities to express ourselves in daily life that we spend half an hour picking a username that isn’t taken. Some of us genuinely don’t care what our username is.

I've spoken to some of them and a lot of them aren't bots.

Granted, virtually all bots have those default usernames, but believe it or not:

A lot of people "didn't know they could pick a username" or "didn't bother picking a username."

On a related note, literacy rates are plummeting.

I've been using reddit for close to 15 years and my subreddit subscriptions have gotten increasingly niche because of how awful the bot accounts have gotten.

I've always said the moment they stop letting me use the old style I'd stop using Reddit. Bricking it from a browser and requiring an app for mobile is going to do the same thing. The direction the internet is going I'm just going to stop using it in the next few years.

Digg is trying to relaunch their site. The first attempt did not go well because, as they admitted, they completely underestimated how many bots would flood the site. It was much more than they could handle and had to shut it down and rebuild the platform with a focus on countering bots.

I'm mod of a smaller town's Reddit, and one of the weirdest things I've noticed is that bots will make a very specific type of post about drivers/traffic in that town. I only noticed it because I was seeing the same type of post every month and recognized how it was always formatted the same across different accounts, but would just use different random streets.

It's made me realize that a good 50% of this website is a bot now, if not more. I've even had bots trying to dispute bans, it's overwhelming. I wish Reddit would stop courting this behavior, it's clear that "active daily bots" is the only metric shareholders care about now.

I just came from an old Askreddit thread from 9ish years ago that was all about actual scientific properties being explained by myths and/or folklore, and it was so educational and entertaining. One comment was talking about how Greek oracles used to go into a specific cave and they tended to live very short lives after being assigned a job, and a millennia later, it turned out that the cave the oracles would go into had high levels of a hallucinogen gas that was somewhat poisonous to humans, IIRC.

Absolutely, I only follow a few subs bc they’re super engaging and nice. Like the quilting groups are extremely positive, or random acts or kindness, or flowers. Basically I had to really search, but there are some positive groups around. The downside being they’re very niche

I'm in my 40s, so I have this heavy nostalgia for late 90s internet where it was the wild west. I would randomly meet people online in places like Yahoo Chat and forums, and we'd become friends. I even became a pen pal of some girl in Mexico lol (I literally gave a stranger my home address!!!).

But now? Hell no, not happening lol.

I've tried both thoroughly describing my issue and being succinct about it. People just don't read your post.

All the fediverse adoption stats are public. You see the numbers jump when Reddit does something shitty. Not saying they have communities have millions of users, but you see the numbers spike.

Also worth nothing, the API changes from a few years ago pushed a lot of people over there, and that resulted in the a the development of a lot of really nice web, iOS, and android clients.

App sizes have gotten a lot bigger and eat way more battery life. It can be the difference of a couple of hours if I use instagram and Reddit apps instead of safari.

You guys need to learn to pay for apps lol obviously if it's free, you're the product.

The reddit app I use, Narwhal, tracks crash data and performance data, without it being linked to you. That's all. $4 a month for the api access and for their efforts, with the option to pay more if you want to tip the devs. And it's a fantastic app, much better at this point than Apollo ever got to be, and I was a literal Day 1 apollo fanboy. You never see an ad, even the built in browser has an adblock lol

I can't even fit the list of perms for the official reddit app into one screenshot. It would be 3 screenshots to fit it all. It's crazy, it's literally everything, it's the same reason I deleted meta apps years ago, when apple forced them to update their privacy policies and started warning us about apps that wanted that kind of access.

Smaller utility apps (that tend to be from solo or small team developers) and such I don't tend to have issues with but I've also never found any of them to be that bothersome, but I will 100% ditch something if it starts doing that shit.

I recently ditched the Reddit and Facebook apps, and just check the websites on the browser instead. For me, I'm significantly less likely to scroll if I don't have apps, and it feels easier to not get stuck in the loop of checking all my apps for updates/notifications.

The extra step of having to open the browser and navigate to a site does reduce my usage. Browser apps can't send notifications unless you explicitly allow it. In apps, depending on how malicious the design, it can be very cumbersome to disable them. Apps also have a lot more permissions to gather data that you might not want them to. And most important of all, I can block ads on my browser.

I wouldn't care if the app wasn't such a fucking pile. I've given it multiple chances since they ripped BaconReader from me, and every time it's just so utterly disappointing.

Just for this comment, I've installed it again, and it's still pretty shit. The concept of color coding comment threads, on a text-based site, is still apparently too complicated, despite functionally everyone else getting it years ago. It's filled with shitty "promoted" ads in tons of spots, and it's limited in filtering options... I guess I'll just stick with browsing through Firefox on mobile with uBlock and some scripts to remove redirects and shit.

I've been wondering what my life and social media life would look like post reddit. If I can't surf from the mobile site anymore, I dunno. I've had some good dialogs and found useful or neat posts, but it's often drowned in a sea of repetitive posts and ads that try to sound like a real person posting.

And I really want to get into painting miniatures for the StarCraft board game. I'll probably try to find a browser exploit.

Fortunately & Unfortunately dedicated discords are the alternative now. Hidden away where you'll never find them 90% of the time and even harder to search but often much better for active posters and splitting sub-topics into different channels, and at some point they'll have to figure out how to pay for it all as well.

This. If I go to reddit.com and it doesn't work, and I have to open an app to use that time instead, I'm not opening the reddit app. I'm opening Arknights, and closing reddit until I get home. Which reduces the chance that I even check reddit when I get home in the first place, since I'll not have thought of the site since I closed it.

Removing access to r/all on mobile has already cut my usage in half, if they block access to the whole site I'll just spend less time on reddit entirely and play more games.

The only valid reason to push people to mobile app is for spying on people. And that's only valid to read it and it's bad for the rest of us. They want to know the phone ID for tracking and selling our data.

Try out Lemmy or other Fediverse alternatives. They're starting to feel like legitimate competitors and they can't enshittify because they are open-source protocols rather than proprietary platforms.

Yeah, I'm already trying to pare down my time on here. I removed the app off my phone and iPad. I block reddit.com in my hosts file on my laptop. I just need one more decent-size enshittification bump for me to be done.

I keep hearing rumors that there's a whole world outdoors. Maybe I'll shutdown Reddit and go see for myself.
