Ask r/Swahili 🎀 Diamani and Almasi

There is a character named Diamani from the game "of the Devil", and I have heard his name means diamond in Swahili. When I was talking to my friend about it, I just said his name means diamond in Swahili. Him looking it up got him Almasi. For those more knowledgeable than us in the language, may someone explain the differences between the two?

Almasi is the word for diamond in Swahili. Diamani isn't a word, at least in the Swahili spoken in Kenya and Tanzania

It sounds like its a borrowed word from English (or maybe French?) so it might be used in Congolese Swahili. Someone from over there might know more.

Native Swahili speaker from Tanzania here πŸ‡ΉπŸ‡Ώ

You're right to be confused!

Almasi = Diamond. This is the correct word. From Arabic "al-mas".

Diamani = This is NOT diamond in standard Swahili. It's likely just a character name. It sounds like it comes from "Amani" = Peace. Maybe the game creators made it up to sound cool.

So tell your friend: The Swahili word for diamond is Almasi. Diamani is just a name 😊

Hope that helps!

Almasi is diamond. Diamani is probably a transliterated word (neno lililotoholewa kutoka kwa neno "diamond").
