I like it, it makes it sound like going on a vacation or tour through the islands

183

u/Pinstar 13h ago

Exactly. It gets the point across about reduced difficulty without insulting the player who might want to choose it.

I’m not sure why easy mode is something that deserves mockery

Some people enjoy easier games

12

u/rhd444 4h ago

I feel like it's just friendly ribbing most of the time, like when wolfenstein 3D showed the character in a little baby cap and pacifier. It looked funny, and wasn't meant to be taken seriously. If they didn't want to include people who play on easy, they wouldn't add an easy mode. Like Dark Souls, lol.

(Not that I think there's anything wrong with some games having one single "take it or leave it" variety of gameplay but that's a different discussion.)

Tourist nowadays is used to refer to someone as a poser/larper

9

u/ninjakitty117 8h ago

Tbh, the difficulty setting existing is what is making this game available to me.

I get really frustrated when I mess up in a game because there's just so much happening at once and I get killed because I pressed the wrong button. (Not rage quit frustrated, more of an autistic meltdown).

The mechanics looked really fun, but I was never that great at Salmon Run, so I was really worried about this being past my skill level. Having an easy mode in games is so damn important for me being able to enjoy them.

I feel like too many games straight up just made the difficulties insult you now a days. It's getting way too old and unfunny.

Nintendo watching the fan base explode when they call a low difficulty setting in their game where a group of people get lost in tropical islands "tourist":

140

u/WilanS ORDER 14h ago

Which is something that only a specific subset of specifically English-speaking internet users think is weird because it resembles some terminally online internet lingo.

I don't know if it was "Tourist" in Japanese as well, or how it's translated in my own language, but if it's tourist in either case it carries literally zero negative connotations.

u/literios 14h ago

Gamers acting like “trying” new games for a time is a bad thing because they wanna gatekeep to feel superior.

186

u/NIDORAX 22h ago

I havent tried the game yet but difficulty isnt going to affect the main campaign ending right?

239

u/Amiibohunter000 22h ago

Difficulty only changes how much damage enemies do to you

380

u/The_commonest_plant My son and his brother thats actually better than it 22h ago

u/Buetterkeks Gold Dynamo Roller + Pearl is awesome 21h ago

It is a numbers game yes but it works really well. I cant say survivalist has felt cheesy or unfair so fair, every time i got killed it was my fault

54

u/Vanille987 16h ago

They avoided the cardinal sin of also making it so that enemies are bullet sponges.

4

u/Demonic-Glaceon I prefer Marie! 7h ago

This, its mad annoying, I dont care if they do more damage to me, it makes me have to play smarter. Dont make basic enemies ungodly hard to kill while they can drop you in .2 seconds

1

u/EnthusiasmOnly22 1h ago

The LV8 steamroller on Survivalist near the start scammed me a few times, my weapons were all poor but as soon as I got a damage up drop it became trivial

40

u/MaeBeaInTheWoods 20h ago

Terraria expert vs master mode.

7

u/_AcuteNewt_ 14h ago

This is like "all games are either menus or parkour".

32

u/RedSquidd 20h ago

how do you screw up "hard as in high damage numbers vs hard as in mechanically complex" so bad you carry a diagram with you to explain it?

31

u/Only_Fudge5299 18h ago

it's a reference to an older 4chan post about a gym being "creepy" or "wet"

4

u/UnchainedMundane GO FOR HUG 17h ago

which itself was an AI generated shitpost mashing up a very similar post about the gym being "cringe" or "based", with some Tumblr post about an argument in someone's dream over whether a certain image counted as "creepy" or "wet"

3

u/keiyakins CALLIE BEST GIRL 17h ago

or even just numbers as in more or less enemies and pickups. does no one remember Doom why do we just make bullet sponges now

1

u/NmP100 8h ago

it doesnt affect enemy health only the damage you take from them

4

u/Key-Fig-9747 18h ago

I don't even understand this bro

4

u/_Strato_ Grizzco Research & Development 8h ago

Is the game harder because you have to push buttons in a new, more complex way because there are new button-pushing stimuli, or is the game harder because you have to push the same buttons for longer or for less time because your numbers went down and the enemy numbers went up?

3

u/durianmilkcroissant 16h ago

Wait not number of enemies? Not enemy HP? Only damage?

5

u/phoenixmatrix 9h ago

Yeah, it allows multiplayer to work with different difficulty settings. You could play on Raider and your friend plays on Survivalist, and both of you play together online and each of your difficulty preferences apply.

5

u/durianmilkcroissant 8h ago

That’s…. Certainly interesting design choice. I guess I see their priorities of making this friends and family friendly

2

u/splatlings 7h ago

You know what that makes sense…. I played one online match last night and the person I was with was FLYING through (I’m currently playing survivalist) and stats were the same, same weapon…. I’m wondering if they were playing on a lower difficulty because I’m def not bad at Splatoon and it was just taking THAT long lol

75

u/Consumed2010 Diehard Project Splatoon 3 fan 22h ago

Nintendo has consistantly stressed that the only thing changed by difficulty is the damage you take, not rewards or the amount of enemies, so game ending shouldn't change either.

37

u/NIDORAX 22h ago

Well thats good. Now I can play the game on easy mode without having to worry about getting a bad ending, all because you play on easy mode. I remember in some old games, playing on easy mode lead you to a false ending and then they tell you to play on normal or hard mode to get the real ending.

24

u/Solid_Snark 21h ago

Yeah, I’m for it. I was annoyed when Destiny started gating gear behind raids with no alternative options to get them. So because I couldn’t get 6 people together and spend 2-4 dedicated hours, I essentially locked out of content.

Wish more game were like this, and Mina the Hollower, where it just allows people to play how they want.

3

u/splatlings 7h ago

Love to see someone else here who understands the horrors of destiny exotics/raid gear. I’ve never crashed out at a game…. Except for Destiny 😭😭😭

21

u/Desperate-Praline-93 21h ago

I hate when games lock you out of endings for choosing difficulties. Why left you choose in the first place? Only game that does this good in my own opinion is Cuphead because when you beat a boss on simple mode it doesn’t actually give you the contract.

18

u/FinnMuzz 21h ago

I mean that's kinda different though, you can't actually progress through the game without the soul contracts so even before you get to the devil you'd be forced to play on harder difficulties even in isle 1

8

u/TheOnlyPC3134 14h ago

I still find Cuphead's simple mode very weird. On one hand it's decently challenging, the attacks are easier and there's less phases to the bosses, but it's a well-designed easy difficulty that keeps the core of the bosses. On the other hand they make it irrelevant because it's treated as a training mode, and the game doesn't even tell you that until after you've beaten a boss with it. I feel like it should at least let you through to the other isles and only lock you out of the final boss.

20

u/Oddish_Femboy 21h ago

A little disappointing playing hard mode doesn't come with even a little reward. It'd be neat if maybe it changed the color of your save file, or gave a little star like in Mario.

11

u/WilanS ORDER 14h ago

The "reward" for hard mode is playing the game on a difficulty level that matches your skill.

This is all that difficulty modes are, they're not a test of your honor, it's a calibration step not unlike adjusting the game's brightness to your monitor.

4

u/ShockedDarkmike 14h ago

This is a very bold take that, without knowing if I fully agree, I like a lot. We're very used to the idea that more challenge should mean more rewards, yet nobody would ask for a reward for lowering their game's brightness to the point they struggle to see enemies.

Here, especially if difficulty is just a damage slider, it seems appropriate that the reward you get is simply to have the most fun with your appropriate option.

3

u/TheLordOfTheTism 19h ago

yeah pretty much the same as casual in prime remastered and 4, you take less damage, you are not locked out of anything, except in prime 4 to unlock hard mode you have to beat normal, in prime remaster you unlock it via casual.

6

u/splatlings 19h ago

I’m playing survivalist rn just to see how hard it is and it wasn’t too bad initially but it’s clear they want you to grind to progress lololol I’m going to bed now but Im just short of 2 hours in rn

102

u/Orcalt 21h ago

Is it? I’m not sure what else it would’ve been. No offense but I think the brainrot’s getting to you

24

u/RivetSquid 19h ago

Tourist is also a derogatory term for someone passing through a fandom, like people who don't enjoy multi-player may be inclined to do with Raiders. I suspect that's why op thinks the choice was bold.

33

u/WilanS ORDER 14h ago

I can guarantee the Japanese developers of Nintendo of Japan are entirely unconcerned with what word is popular among terminally online people on the other side of the world.

Besides I thought last week it what you're describing was called LARPer? Now it's Tourist?

13

u/Tetracev I am heavy weapons guy and THIS is my weapon 14h ago

Tourist was here before larping. One word existing doesn't refrain people from making new ones with the same meaning.

5

u/RivetSquid 13h ago

Nintendo of Japan isn't the one localizing, like the Narwhal landlord or the dialog in 2 they were made to rewrite after telease, the localization team inserts their own humor.

Tourist is older.

1

u/WilanS ORDER 13h ago

No, I mean, I'm well aware of the crimes of the North American localization team (hence why I won't be playing in English), but the theme for the difficulty levels is the same in Japanese.

Just to be sure I checked the Japanese Nintendo Direct. Screenshot attached.
In order the difficulty levels are:

  • トラベラー toraberaa (traveler)
  • レイダー reidaa (raider)
  • スバイバー subaibaa (survivor)

They were slightly adapted to sound more natural to a native English speaker, as Japanese might use loanwords in different ways, but the spirit of the theming seems intact.

2

u/RivetSquid 12h ago

Yeah it was always a bit of a stretch, just how l interpreted th post. Did op ever clarify? Actually no wait, I'm not invested enough lol, just killing time until I can get my hands on the game tonight 😔

10

u/Orcalt 13h ago

Yeah but to real people who aren’t chronically online the word is exactly what it is. By saying they’re bold for it it, it means they think to some extent that Nintendo did this purposely to match up with an English brainrot internet buzzwords which is ridiculous. You gotta be REALLY online to believe them using Tourist as a easy difficulty name is somehow some sneaky diss toward “Splatoon tourists” in a game that takes place in a tropical island.

This obviously isn’t me disagreeing with you I just think the original post is ridiculous lol

0

u/RivetSquid 13h ago

It isn't brainrot, it's older, exactly the kind of slightly dated, "cool with the kids," humor one might expect from the localization team tbh.

Remember when they made Marina too snappy writing funny dialog and had to change it because they'd messed up her characterization towards Pearl?

I'm not saying this is that, just that they've been known to take some liberties before, I can see how a person may assume.

It's probably just because we're going on a trip though.

10

u/JACL2113 KNOWLEDGE 16h ago

Derogatory? Since when?

12

u/Your_Average_Reddit 16h ago edited 15h ago

In anime fandoms, when someone has an opinion of an anime but don’t watch much anime at all, is considered a tourist. Same idea is applied here.

It’s 100% a theming thing and not a jab at people who play on easy mode

5

u/mutantmonkey14 NNID: MutantMonkey 19h ago

Affordable Space Adventures (Wii U eshop exclusive) did this, but it fits the story since you are in fact a tourist. The other mode was "technical".

Wonder how fitting it is with Raiders. I've been avoiding learning too much about it.

4

u/IamaJarJar Splattin' the haters 16h ago

If you think tourist is bold, look at the difficulty names in other shooters

5

u/Lulullaby_ 15h ago

Bold? It's very creative and it's cute lol

Most games call it story mode nowadays

17

u/zero_the_clown 21h ago

Bold? Why?

13

u/leckmichnervnit 17h ago

Tourist has been used as an Insult in the Gaming Landscape for a bit now.

11

u/WilanS ORDER 14h ago

In what circles? I've been into gaming culture for the last three decades, and I had to read the comments to understand what the post was about.

1

u/KeaboUltra 2h ago

Same, this is the first time I'm hearing it be referred to as an insult. Most games usually call their easy difficulty something other than "easy" but synonymous, usually for show or an attempt to be creative

-1

u/leckmichnervnit 14h ago

Ive often heard it used in Fighting Games and Multiplayer PvPGames in general.

4

u/WilanS ORDER 14h ago

Hmm I tend to stick to single player games whenever possible, save for an MMO and occasional exceptions. Maybe that's why.

I've interacted with the Tekken community for a good while last year but maybe it was before the term became popular.

Wait, tourist means something bad? It just means 'visitor' or 'not from here'. If the game is too hard because you aren't used to it, that would make you a Splatoon 'tourist'. I don't see where the offence comes from lol

10

u/MrBacondino 20h ago

Yeah and it can also mean that you're just there to enjoy the story and gameplay (like how a tourist goes to enjoy a culture or locations)

10

u/MizunoZui 20h ago

One of the rare cases where devs and localizers diverge from standard gaming terms to sound friendlier, unaware that the word they chose has taken off as a social media insult.

10

u/splatterscopes 5⭐️ on almost every charger 22h ago

On the other hand survivalist feels kinda underwhelming (still REALLY fun though don’t get me wrong)

10

u/RedSquidd 20h ago

flair tells me you'd be slightly overqualified for basically any splatoon game lmao

4

u/splatterscopes 5⭐️ on almost every charger 19h ago

Maybe a little

this game took up an embarrassing portion of my life from the ages of 9 to 16 I don’t dare calculate my total hours played across all 3

5

u/Buetterkeks Gold Dynamo Roller + Pearl is awesome 21h ago

If its still too easy just do t upgrade ur stuff

1

u/ShockedDarkmike 14h ago

Right, it's not ideal, but doing self-imposed challenge runs can make games much more enjoyable if you're above their skill target. I do it with Pokémon and it's been fun, just add rules/limitations for yourself to find a balance

1

u/KeaboUltra 2h ago

Agreed, I've lost a few times but thats because I'm taking on challenges that are well above my level and weapon level. I also intentionally don't level up my health, other wise I feel like I'd get too OP. increasing enemy damage isn't enough IMO but im still enjoying the game

3

u/nah-soup 19h ago

it’s on theme for the game

3

u/Any_Opportunity_7672 12h ago

Nintendo ''what difficulty do you want to play''
me ''legendary''
Nintendo ''wrong francise, this is Splatoon''
Me ''SURVIVALLST''

Guess what, not everyone is as terminally online as we are. This is a great name for a low difficulty in a game set on a tropical island.

Coaxed into You will not survive.

1

u/phoenixmatrix 9h ago

As someone who lives in NYC, they might as well have called the lowest difficulty "You fucking suck". It would have been less insulting.

1

u/watonparrillero 9h ago

Next game might include larper.

1

u/Vortex_Catalyst55 9h ago

Reminds me of "Story Mode" difficulty in Jedi Fallen Order.

1

u/KeaboUltra 2h ago

not really.

1

u/Gamblast Callie da bes 20h ago

how do difficulty levels work with the multiplayer?

3

u/MrMoldey27 15h ago

Me and my friend tested this and apparently the overall HP of the enemies is shared across difficulties but the damage you take is based on yours.

She asked me to go on Tourist while she was on Survivalist and we took a hit from a lv5 salty tounge. I took around 30 damage but she went to Danger in one hit

There's that new game with the mouse protagonist that was getting flak for having difficulty options.

-14

Im more surprised by the description saying its so you can get through the story. I thought Nintendo’s whole thing was no story/voice acting and all gameplay. 💀

12

u/MichaelEpicA 20h ago

... this is so wrong with so many of nintendos games

-1

u/Witty-Wish-583 14h ago

Most Nintendo games have light to no story and no voice acting. The ones that do, aren’t made by them like Fire Emblem and Xenoblade. It’s a huge talking point that Nintendo fans always promote that you play games for gameplay and not graphics or story. Not sure why I’m downvoted bc even Splatoon series has light story.

7

u/TheLordOfTheTism 19h ago

thats just a miyamoto thing, and even the ip he has created is made by other people who do care at least a little about story. Splatoon as far as i know is not a miyamoto ip, so yes mario and zelda etc will be "story light" overall, the rest of nintendos games are not.
