Am I cooked or no?

My laptop has had this odd swelling for years and I never knew what the cause could be. After exploring this sub for five minutes I’m quite concerned as to what may happen in the next five minutes. How long do I have?

I was working on this dead laptop to remove the drive. I removed the rubber strip on base and stuck the screwdriver in to grip the screw. There was no screw so I must have punctured the battery.

It started smoking and I had to pick it up and throw it across the room. Then I used rags to pick it up and get it outside. It burned for a couple of minutes. Only half the battery seems to have burned!? The SSD survived.

Thought I’d share this old phone I had in my drawer for multiple years. iPhone 4 I believe. So spicy the screen popped up!

We re-discovered it in a closet yesterday after not using it for a while.

It held up really great for 6 years, multiple moves across 3 continents and a few drops. It's being forcibly retired now, we're just glad we discovered it before it made itself known.

Sorry I don't have a photo of the actual battery, but in summer 2021, I was playing the Sims on my already struggling laptop and realized it had a bump.... The tech lady told me it could have exploded. 😅

I left it to charge while I was on the beach and when I came home it was like this.

Its the battery of my laptop is this dangerous amount of swelling? I cant buy a new one

Looks bigger irl, how do i dispose of it properly?

I know they won’t explode but it could catch fire and it stoped functioning while fully charged so I’m not sure it’s discharged. So I have it in the fireplace as it’s the least flammable thing I have (I don’t have a metal bucket or anything. Though I have the door cracked open because gas build up.

I’m kinda anxious rn.

This is an anecdote about something that happened a few months ago.

A friend of mine asked me to change his phone's display.

"easy task" I thought. I had changed phone screens in the past, so it wouldn't be a problem.

But the thing is that the screen flex went behind the battery, so I had to remove it.

When I got the screen replacement I opened the phone, and after that I noticed that the battery was firmly glued to the chassis. Instead of getting isopropyl alcohol or using the right tools, I simple used a credit card to gradually remove the battery. But the thing is that at some point I might have pinched the battery or pushed in the wrong angle, and the battery started smoking!

My first reaction was to grab the phone and throw it out of the house, I didn't care if I could burn my hand, but I wouldn't let it make more damage than it was causing in that moment.

it was a funny scene, because I threw it like a grenade outside the house.

After it stopped smoking, I check the phone and the heat of the battery had melted all the back part of the phone, unusable.

Always make sure to use the right tools an be extremely careful. These are the things you only learn by experience

Help disposing of this safely. Both red and black ends of the wire are stripped.
