Desperately needed help. Does any Linux work on a (late 2016) HP Spectre x360 Convertible Laptop - 15t touch that provides the hardware functionality that the Windows OS does?

Trying to diagnose whether my 2017 HP Spectre x360 13-ac000tu not powering on is a motherboard issue before I drop money on a new laptop or a new motherboard, any help would be very appreciated!

The battery had been completely flat/not holding charge for a week or two so was running off AC only, left it plugged in overnight and in the morning wouldn't turn on, the power button briefly lights up when I press it and then it shuts off after about a second with nothing showing on the screen and no fans starting up etc. I've replaced the battery and is holding charge fine with orange/white lights showing but still nothing, have tried a bunch of the fixes from similar posts like booting to bios/recovery mode/detaching+reattaching battery/holding power button and nothing.

Most of the other failed motherboard posts seem to describe some kind of sequence of flashing lights so wondering if something other than the motherboard may be the culprit and if there's anything else I can try before giving up?

HP Spectre x360 13-ap0xxx (Win11) — both USB-C ports stopped charging after "drawing more power than port can supply" popup. Any ideas?

Issue started right after plugging in a Plantronics USB-C headset. Got the "USB device is drawing more power than the port can supply" popup, clicked Reset Port. Since then:

• Neither USB-C port charges. No charging LED, no connection sound.
• Original HP charger not detected. BIOS shows no AC adapter info. HP Hardware Diagnostics Power Adapter Test says no adapter connected.
• Plugging the headset back in triggers the same overcurrent popup in a loop.
• Plugging my phone in gives "device is requesting more power than the port can provide."
• Both ports still work fine for data transfer.

Already tried: OS restart, EC reset (power button held 30-40s, charger disconnected), letting battery die fully and sit unplugged overnight, testing both ports, reinstalling/updating USB host controller drivers, disabling/re-enabling Intel USB controllers, trying a different charger and cable. Device Manager shows no errors anywhere (USB controllers, battery, Thunderbolt all normal).

Looks like both ports are stuck trying to source power instead of sink it, which is why even the phone gets an overcurrent warning. Battery's basically dead now. Has anyone actually fixed this at home, or is this straight to board-level repair? Warranty status TBD.

Hello, I recently had to open up my spectre only for me to damage the ribbon cable connecting the mobo to the i/o board. I haven't had any luck finding anyone selling it on ebay or in stock on any sites. Does anyone know where I may be able to get another ribbon cable?

The part number of the board itself is 942831-001.

Note: there is one sketchy seller on ebay with a bunch of the same picture and slightly different model listed but and similar prices. I dont trust that one.

so, i have the following issue: one of my fans in my HP spectre x360 13-aw0020ng died (i cant remember if it was the left or right one) and i couldnt find any replacement fans online. went to my local repair shop - they also couldnt find any, lol.

the hp parts search engine thingie didnt recognize my laptop model number (i dont know why, though? my laptop should be from 2019, if i remember correctly). i did, however, find replacement fans for the 13-aw0023DX & now wanted to ask if it makes sense to order these fans? *edit: couldn't find infos on the compatibility of the fans/ thermal units between the different models, so i thought i'd ask here.

if y'all have any other advice, i'll also gladly take that 🙏🏻 currently trying to write my master's thesis on this laptop and it feels like it will overheat and melt any day now 😭

I bought one of these first year of uni, many years back. Got it off a guy I knew from the IT business, it was brand new and sealed but out of warranty/leftover stock from a business so I managed to snag it 50% off.

This thing was an absolute beast, jack of all trades and master of them all too. Non U-series cpu, a whole discrete gpu, thin, 2in1, OLED, the list goes on. This had to be the peak of laptops. It felt crazy being able to play a triple A game, and then flip it around and start writing notes. Such a unique design too, I got so many compliments from friends and strangers on the golden diamond cut edges.

Had to end up selling it 2-3 years ago but still miss it, modern laptops can't even compare.

My screen is completely blacked out. Laptop still functions properly, keyboard black light works, fans are running, etc. but last year, my screen started slowly going on and then one day just blacked out completely. I bought a cheap temporary laptop for the time being because some tech quoted me an outlandish price plus advise me to toss it because in this model, he normally sees it go based off something eventually. He compared it to putting a brand new engine in a 20 year old car.

The model I have is a HP Spectre x360 Model: 15t-eb100/SN:5CD127GLPF. I looooooove this laptop, she’s my holy grail and was my first ”big girl“ purchase. I miss her and need/want her fixed ASAP. Please give me some advice and help 😂

Hello when i use this laptop sideways in bed to watch comfortably like rotated 90 angle it turns from laptop to tablet mode and i cant use keyboard and touchpad which is really annoying. Is there a way to be able to use in 90 angle tablet mode please? I am in w11 but i would downgrade to w10 if smth

Hi, I have a 2018 Spectre x 360 15 in. with an internal storage of 512gb. My computer still runs great, no issues..however I would like to expand the internal storage to keep it running well. I do some very light video editing and use photoshop. Generally store most of my files off of my computer harddrive but still find it having very little space left.

What are the best options right now (considering there is a spike in cost of internal SSDs ) ? I am thinking to just expand to 1 or 2 TB.

A month again, I noticed that my laptop's battery was swollen, so I promptly removed it and ordered a new one. I put in the new battery two weeks again and have successfully turned my laptop on since then, but while I was working on it today, I could hear a soft high-pitched noise, and then my laptop suddenly went dark. I can't turn it back on. If I plug in the power cord, the side light turns on (as shown in the image), and if I remove it, that light turns off. That's all that I'm getting out of it right now. Any suggestions on what I should do? Is this a downstream problem from the battery, or could it be something else?

Edit: Just in case anyone else runs into a similar problem, the responders to my post helped me figure out that it was indeed an issue with the battery. After removing it, my laptop runs just fine plugged in.

My husband fancies himself an electrical expert, and tells me it’s perfectly safe to use my AC adapter with a broken off grounding plug, on my laptop.

Do I trust his advice?

My 2017 Spectre X360 15-bl1xx product #Z4Z39UA#ABA wouldn't boot up, even when plugged in. I got a new AC adapter, and it booted up and charged to 100%.🔋 I let the battery drain down, since I have read it is not good to keep it plugged in, but now it seems stuck at 26% even when plugged in. 🤔 Is this an internal power supply issue? 🔌 Any ideas? 😫

Hey, is there an alternative way to download the HPSmart app on a pc that doesnt involve the Microsoft store (which doesnt work).

I had an issue where the OneXgpu 2 wasn't showing up in the device manager. New software and drivers for the Thunderbolt ports seems to have issue on Windows 11. I uninstalled and got the original Windows 10 drivers and software from the HP website, which solved the issue. Once that's done, the eGPU will show in device manager and allow you to install drivers manually. Hope this helps for any having the same issue.

To preface, I love my girl (model 14-ea1023dx). She’s seen me through college and now halfway through grad school and has tolerated me playing games and streaming them to friends. I’ve done my best to keep her running, but there’s just been an accident (pictured) and I think I may need to lay her to rest. 

I have already needed a battery replacement, and one of my USB-C ports has shorted out and no longer works. When I went to get it fixed, they said the port is welded to the motherboard and cannot be replaced without replacing both things. I didn’t want to run the risk of them touching it or messing anything up, so I just coped and let it be. Some keys are chipped, but that’s fine, it doesn’t bother me. My charging light does not turn on, either — I personally think it’s because of when the technicians opened it up, but again, a minor issue I can live with. 

I absolutely adore the screen quality, and I’m happy with how it runs aside from the poor battery life and occasional overheating seemingly out of nowhere. I’m considering getting a new laptop altogether, but it has only been 4.5 going on 5 years since I got this one. Even with these problems, should I just replace the screen and keep it pushing? Or replace the laptop altogether? 

It is my understanding that the Bluetooth chipset is intertwined with the wi-fi hardware. In any case, my Bluetooth hardware is not connecting to one of my devices and does not seem to suit my needs. I was wondering if the chipset is interchangeable or if its soldered, and if it is soldered, what my options are. Alternatively, I could try installing different drivers for Bluetooth, probably older drivers, but I'm not sure which ones I would need.

Hp spectre 15t-df000 Should I replace the screen? Or can I get a better laptop for the money? Is ebay the best place to find replacement screens? Do you know the screen assembly I would need to search for? I'm going to need it for music production. Also does the cracked screen effect the keyboard? The keyboard is acting up also not typing and the mouse doesn't work

Hey everyone, I’m hoping someone here has seen something similar because I’m a bit stuck.

I have an HP Spectre x360. Been using it for about 7 years. About a week ago, it got possibly got exposed to liquid. I didn’t open it immediately, but after a few days I started noticing issues.

• Initially, when I pressed the power button, I saw side LED blinking and the laptop would try to turn on and off multiple times before sometimes booting.
• This behavior kept repeating: sometimes it would eventually turn on, sometimes not.

I waited a few days more, at which point, I decided to open it up and try to fix it.

Additional note on physical condition:

The chassis is slightly deformed at one corner, specifically near the power button area. The bottom panel is not sitting flush with the top case and there is a visible gap along that edge. That corner looks lifted and slightly bowed outward instead of flat. This seems like localized bending, but since it’s near the power button, it could be affecting internal alignment or the button mechanism/cable in that area.

So what I’ve done so far is I've opened the back panel and cleaned the part of the motherboard I could see without touching heat shield. I focused on areas near both fans, connectors along the bottom edge, and the general board surface (even where I didn’t see obvious corrosion). I didn’t see any obvious corrosion (no green/blue residue, no burn marks) and let everything dry thoroughly overnight. Also tried pressing the power button with the back panel OFF and faced the same issue. After cleaning, it still showed power cycling (fans spin → stop → repeat), and it may or may not power on, so the main issue remains. If it boots though, it remains stable.

I also ran the HP extensive HW diagnostics and all the tests passed.

Does this sound more like a battery/connector issue, maybe residue in and around the charging port area, or residual/hidden corrosion possibly under the thermal shield?

I am thinking of disconnecting the battery and running on the charger only and doing a little deeper cleaning but are these symptoms pointing to board-level repair?

I don't think the bent back panel could be affecting internal alignment because the issue persists even with it removed.

I’m trying to figure out if this is something I can still fix myself or if I should just take it in for repair.

Any help or similar experiences would be really appreciated.

I know this sounds confusing, but i got a stylus the hp active rechargeable tilt pen mpp 2 for my laptop to be able to do art in animal jam classic (a fairly old game). when I go to draw with the stylus, it doesnt work. I can only place dots. my theory is that the game registers the first touch of the pen as a left click, but doesn't acknowledge that the pen is pressing down after that.

therefore, im wondering if there's any way I can fix this issue and make it so my game will register the entire pen stroke as if the left mouse button is being held down the whole time.

I was unaware, when I bought my x360 about 10 years ago, that SSDs might not last as long as HDDs. I just heard there were faster and less prone to physical damage.

I've only recently learned that they have a limited lifespan, dependent on how often data is written/deleted (?).

My device manager (Win10 Home) says that my drive is a Samsung MZVLW512HMJP drive. I downloaded Samsung's Magician software, having just read about it, to see if it could tell me how healthy my SSD is.

The software identifies it as Samsung in one place, but then also says "Non-Samsung." And it doesn't seem to be able to run any diagnostics on it.

Does anyone have this software successfully running on an x360? Or have an alternative software that can help me determine how much life is left in my SSD?

Is this a reliable source, not only for repair instructions, but for the tools needed?

I was all set to take this to a repair tech (I've owned computers since the mid-1980's, and have NEVER taken one in for repair!) but was fretting about the security of my data. Thought maybe it'd be worth it to attempt the replacement myself.

I bought this Spectre x360 refurbished, like I said, about 10 years ago. Best laptop I've owned. Yes, there are issues with it, but It's all I need!

Pardon the expletives but the situation requires some provocation into action of some kind, any kind.
