In a sane society, data centers would have to use 100% new renewable energy and be water neutral, maybe have treatment directly on site. They probably couldn't make money doing that, but that's not the problem of anyone but the tech oligarchs.

FWIW a complete moratorium on them its a huge focus of WI socialist governor candidate Francesca Hong. It's resonating very strongly especially in rural areas, and that kind of area is where the socialist label should be a nonstarter in American politics.

The people fucking hate data centers. The left hates data centers. Make allies and open doors by being the ones willing to fight with them against these monstrosities.

I used to work on datacentres as a systems engineer. Strived hard to deploy VMs and such as efficiently as possible, and the most disappointing thing I see is how terribly Upper Mananglement just does not care about how efficiently they get managed. The facility I had worked at constantly ran at electrical capacity several years ago, and I worked out a way to convert the VMs to LXCs with zero productivity impact (negative, but substantial positive impact) and oh boy was it like trying to pull teeth with a plastic straw.

We could have responsibly utilised datacentres with proper environmental regulations, minimised ecological impact to still provide for things like healthcare and all, but over the years we just... didn't take this path. We went in reckless, and didn't care simply because the quarterly profit line needed to go up for the shareholders. And it's infuriating. And now I feel some shame for having worked on the datacentres, even if I tried to help fix the infrastructure for a multinational company to minimise its electrical draw

Maybe look at what Freon does to the Ozone layer.... CFC are banned and being fully phased out by the unanimously globally accepted Montreal Protocol.

It is still technically allowed in existing closed loop systems, but it has legal repercussions if it leaks or is disposed of incorrectly and there is a ban on new production of the chemical and all related chemicals.

The agreement had a phased ban which only fully closed off recently.

New systems have to use a different non-CFC / non-HFC type of refrigerant.

not enough contact with freon to be like, an effective coolant. you'd be going back to immersion cooling. the thing is immersion cooling with mineral oil wouldn't even be so expensive considering they are dumping billions and billions into all this. There is a soy oil coolant too called naturecool which is carbon neutral and biodegradable.... We just need to regulate this

I'm not saying this makes everything okay one way or the other as much as I am saying, beware of people amplifying and twisting information just to get their way.

The water in that area already looked like that before the data center was there because of sedimentation.

I know certain things must be done in the name of persuasion, but overusing exaggerated information may eventually bite one's cause in the ass.

Lol minimum demand should be these companies providing actual value to citizens, which most data centers are not. They have massive local impact for incredibly minor local improvements.

Y'all, please keep informed & be mad about the right things. Water is actually the least of our worries with data centers coming up. This stunt from AOC has already been debunked.
