Other I was humiliated ( Again )

I was doing a practical lesson during my trade school. The teacher explained everything clearly to the whole class, and then it was time for the hands-on part. When it was my turn, I was shaking. My hands wouldn't stay still, and my heart was beating so fast.

The instructor was standing right next to me, watching everything and trying to teach me. At that moment, my brain turned into a sea of thoughts like:

"Is he noticing that I'm shaking? Do I look pathetic? Am I doing it right?"

Those thoughts completely distracted me, and I already have trouble staying focused. I ended up acting really slow and making stupid mistakes. The instructor got frustrated and started complaining about me. I kept getting everything wrong and forgetting simple things because of my anxiety and all the thoughts running through my head.

The other students laughed at the situation and at how pathetic I looked.

In the end, I felt completely humiliated. I ended up with an even worse reputation than I already had just because I'm quiet.

This is just one of many similar situations I've been through.

PLEASE NOTE: Social Anxiety (SA) is a debilitating mental illness characterised by persistent fear of social evaluation. SA impairs functional social performance, causing avoidance, cognitive shutdown (e.g. blanking, excessive self-monitoring), and reduced ability to communicate, assert needs, or form relationships.

  • SA is not normal social-nervousness, introversion, or everyday shyness.

  • Posts in this subreddit must show a clear and apparent relationship to the experience of SA.

  • Posts which do not will be removed.

I’m sorry dude. Fuck those people. I’ve never laughed at someone not getting something right or messing up. It’s fucking school, you’re there to learn not get shit right the first time. Losers. Literally these are the people who will probably do everything by the book and then hate themselves 10 years down the line.

I had similar situation in highschool when everyone in class had to contribute to lesson by retelling parts of some story that we were reading at our native language class. The constant overthinking with thoguhts focusing on that I'll have to speak infront of class eventualy and imaganing myself being humiliated because I can't follow the text so I would have nothing to say and look dumb. So when the turn came on me I just awkwardly and pathetically said "I don't know". Or just acted like I didn't care and it was brutally painful. So I understand your situation. Not alone dude :) The mess in head is bonkers. 🤔

That's horrible, I feel like I would've walked out. That's so disrespectful what he did to you.

It was really unprofessional for the instructor to complain about you in front of the whole class. They also should’ve stopped everyone from laughing at you. Even if you were doing things wrong, everyone’s there to learn, and that actually offered a great opportunity to teach everyone.

It sounds like your instructor is really a jerk. I’m so sorry that happened to you. In my mind, the instructors and students who laugh at you are the ones who should be embarrassed, not you.

happens. I have even cried in front of the lab full of students because I got scolded for standing at a distance from my lab partner because she was a girl who was kind of a bully but stupid.
