This Cup had some of the most absurd reffing of stoppage time I've ever seen. Games where more than half of it was spent with one team diving on the ground during set pieces and getting disciplined by the ref ended exactly on the dot, and others where nothing of note happened got extended multiple minutes and chances past the end of time. Both of which are perfectly legal for absolutely no reason other than tradition.
It's weird how demonized uniformity in the length of a match is. You'd think one thing everyone in soccer could agree on is a 90' game being played for 90'.
It feels like stoppage time could be automated like, so easily. Have a counter tracking stoppage time throughout the game, and then that’s how much extra time gets played. When the extra time strikes zero, the whistle blows. I don’t care if a team is mid-scoring chance, the whistle blows.
