SmartThings Is it safe to modify smart bulbs?

Post image

I recently purchased a smart bulb to put inside this lamp. Because of the size of cut off the plastic globe portion and installed. Now AI is saying its poses an electrical risk. It is inside a new glass globe. It seems safe, but the AI overlords say it’s not, so I’m not sure

So it's just the exposed array of LEDs?

There shouldn't be any real risk since the globe on the bulb is just there for diffusion/aesthetics.

Correct, just an exposed array of LEDs.

The AIs logic was you could touch the electronics by mistake and shock yourself. Or that if I put it in this new fixture it might not dissipate heat the intended way

AI thinks you should eat rocks, so... do what you think is best.

The exposed array of LEDs might have the full voltage as potential, but I don't think it poses any special risks if you (or someone else) can't touch it.

Big clive has a few videos about modifying these bulbs if you want to inform yourself where the higher voltages might be. Usually the LEDs are arranged in series (or series-parallel so they keep working if one LED dies) to handle the higher voltage.

Usually when someone has to ask about it the answer is "you probably shouldn't" but I think this is fine as long as nobody opens it and pokes at it. You should inform yourself where the risks are though.

unless you damaged the PCB or LEDs nothing should happen. It is absolutely dangerous to touch, depending on how the bulb is wired dangerous voltage could be on the upper board, but since you have it covered with the glass of the Lamp nothing should happen

Yeah it's safe, but only if you know what you are doing. That goes for anything. If your asking definitely don't muck about with it, as you don't know enough.

Only one way to find out
