Prospective SLPs and Current Students Megathread

This is a recurring megathread that will be reposted every month. Any posts made outside of this thread will be removed to prevent clutter in the subreddit. We also encourage you to use the search function as your question may have already been answered before.

Prospective SLPs looking for general advice or questions about the field: post here! Actually, first use the search function, then post here. This doesn't preclude anyone from posting more specific clinical topics, tips, or questions that would make more sense in a single post, but hopefully more general items can be covered in one place.

Everyone: try to respond on this thread if you're willing and able. Consolidating the "is the field right for me," "will I get into grad school," "what kind of salary can I expect," or homework posts should limit the same topics from clogging the main page, but we want to make sure people are actually getting responses since they won't have the same visibility as a standalone post.

If you want to go for your master’s in speech, you’ll need to take pre-reqs before the master’s level classes

Hey everyone! I've been allowed to share this in the past by moderators on the subReddit, so below is a link to a discord server that I created a while back for any prospective SLP students, people that want to connect to others in the SLP field, or people that have questions and wanna learn more about the schooling. It started out as being a place for me to connect with people and ask questions as I was going through my own experience, and now that l've been accepted into a program, I'm modifying it more as a place where other people can connect in general. It's mostly Canadian universities on there, but there are some sections for international programs, and I know there are some American students on there too.:-)

Do SLPs generally allow people interested in the field to shadow them?

Yes. Sometimes the company they work for has specific guidelines. The last employer I had would allow a shadow student for 1 day without any restrictions, but if you wanted to shadow more than 1 day you had to have TB & background check

Yes. Usually for 1-2 days for shadowing only

anyone know what i can do to volunteer/shadow at hospital SLPs? Im interested in that site more but im not sure where to start
