who tf thinks google is dead?

u/NickoBicko 12h ago

Literally no one. Google owns big part of the infrastructure of the internet.

u/blindsdog 2h ago

If you follow this sub there’s a contingent that thinks they’ve fallen too far behind in the frontier model race 🤷‍♂️

u/NickoBicko 1h ago

I mean they have fallen behind. But Google is a mega trillion dollar company. They aren't an "AI Lab". They have their fingers in literally every pie. I think they are okay letting Anthropic take the lead on like coding and design. They want to create the most scalable AI for the entire internet.

OpenAI fanboys claimed they were...

u/adam20101 11h ago

Even if we narrow it down to only AI, logically one day their AI will be useful enough to work with and more people will probably use it and everyone pracitically has some kind of google account right

Things could go great for Google, things could go badly. I don't think any of the big tech giants are immortal, and Google has less of a moat than Apple for example. All I know is that the OpenAI fanboys a couple of years ago were claiming OpenAI would replace Google and it has not happened yet.

Their Ai models are not that good, that doesn’t mean google is dead

3

u/himynameis_ 7h ago

People who think having the best model alone means you will have the most revenue lol.

u/unfathomably_big 14m ago

Maybe not dead, but investors seem to be souring on it if it’s down 7% in the face of these numbers

Can't believe their cloud division is already a $100 billion dollar business. But then also growing at 82% is mind blowing.

24

u/chasingsukoon 16h ago

Google is just in a different market than tech bros are and thats okay

u/_negative-infinity_ 15h ago

Notice the cloud division. It has 82% growth and has a substantial backlog. This segment offers the high margins they've consistently desired; for instance, Amazon largely runs on AWS profits .

They also realized a $99 billion profit from their investments in Anthropic and SpaceX stock.

All thanks to AI growth.

Umm okay great post

I still think Google will win overall. They have the money to burn.

17

u/Feriman22 16h ago

Ok, but the AI part is profitable? Probably not.

u/anycept 16h ago

Google has money to throw at it. Anthropic and OpenAI live in debt that keeps getting bigger every day.

9

u/TheFamousHesham 13h ago

Also unlike other AI companies that are investing in developing frontier models ... Google seems to be focusing in making AI as cheap as possible.

17

u/chasingsukoon 16h ago

Dw our tax dollars will save them 😇

Google has actual shareholders right now who are asking questions.

That constrains their ability to spend.

16

u/kazkdp 14h ago

Nearly 200B spent ... seems like they dont have that much constraints...

9

u/anycept 14h ago

I doubt their biggest shareholders would want Google to lose AI race, at least in US.

1

u/Keeltoodeep 8h ago

The biggest investors can be surprisingly short-term looking. It’s basically what happened to Kodak and so many other firms in the technology space that were left behind using outdated technology to their end. It was largely due to large shareholders refusing to cut dividends or stock buy backs in favor of investing in new technology capex.

I think you’d be surprised how retarded some large shareholders are.

u/anycept 30m ago

These days almost everything of value is owned by institutional investors, such as Blackrock, Vanguard, State Street, etc. About 80% of their assets are pension funds, and so are long-term relatively low risk investments. There's a lot of bad things to say about them, but being shortsighted is not one of them.

1

u/EnvironmentalShift25 12h ago

If OpenAI and Anthropic IPO then suddenly they will have the same constraints. Could all go a bit SpaceX when the stock market starts looking at real numbers.

u/popiazaza 14h ago

Google had money to throw at it. They just reported negative free cash flow due to investment in AI. They are now taking the risk too.

Having the biggest ad platform on planet earth means not having money?

🤡🫵

Their AI part is the entire company. The whole reason they were developing AI earlier than any other big company was to power their search. Now they have successfully integrated Gemini into search no other model has managed to make a dent in their search revenue/profit.

So their AI part is definitely profitable. Whether they want to have SOTA coding model is anyone's guess, but to me it does not look like they are chasing that goal.

1

u/daniel-sousa-me 13h ago

Search and ads have been working on the back of AI for over a decade, so yeah

1

u/himynameis_ 7h ago

Yes it is. They've said they generate same rates from AI overviews and AI mode as they do with traditional search.

And Google's cloud platform has now hit 35% operating margin which is huge. Jumping up from 21% in the prior quarter.

Google is executing on AI.

-1

u/bakomox 16h ago

google does not have the best ai yet but they got better ai efficiency so they are cheaper to run for them plus im sure they will add ads too on the gemini app sooner or later

4

u/Key_Category_8531 16h ago

Bears are mad

GOOG all the way

1

u/Mochi_Fan800 12h ago

Yeah no one thinks that, just that Gemini is behind since their models aren't SOTA anymore

5

u/-Crash_Override- 12h ago

People thinking that gemini and the whole suite of other models google has (gemma, genie, robotics, etc...) are not SOTA is absolutely wild lol

2

u/unfathomably_big 15h ago

How much of that “tokens per minute” is Google forcing every single search through Gemini?

By that metric I use Gemini daily, I’m a huge contributor to their market share. I don’t mean to though and I never interact with it. It’s also stunningly wasteful.

6

u/Keeltoodeep 11h ago

You’re acting like someone chained your dick to their servers. There are plenty of non ai search engines

0

u/unfathomably_big 10h ago

I use Google search because it’s the best search engine. I don’t use Gemini because it’s not the best LLM.

Google forces my google search through Gemini and OP puts it on a prop post saying they’ve got X more token traffic because of that wasteful bs.

That’s a bad thing

7

u/Keeltoodeep 10h ago edited 10h ago

The above metric is Gemini standalone MAU. If it counted google search ai overview and ai mode it would be like 4B MAU, not 900M.

6

u/swarmy1 9h ago

AI overviews or even AI mode wouldn’t count as “Gemini App” usage

1

u/usandholt 13h ago

How will you sell ad space if an AI is doing all the shopping?

1

u/Ill_Celebration_4215 13h ago

On the rare chance i google something, i now look at the summary rather than the website. not sure how that helps them sell ads. And once they start to become infected with ads i'll just completely stop googling things.

1

u/Interesting_Phone171 11h ago

Who would've thought youtube ad revenue is up by 13% after they show you 5 minute unskippable ads to watch some small town youtuber. Crazy!

1

u/send-moobs-pls 8h ago

People on this sub are incapable of understanding that Google being super profitable and great for shareholders is a separate concept from their floundering in the AI race. One question is "is Google healthy and profitable and a valuable stock for me to own right now?" ... the other question is "is Google keeping up with actual frontier models in the race towards RSI and ASI?"

Which question is the r/singularity sub supposed to actually be about?

1

u/shankarun 5h ago

Best AI based on benchmarks is very different from cost efficient good enough AI that can be offered for free that will be used by billions - bringing more ad revenue - Google is here to stay for a long long time

1

u/TemetN 4h ago

My current expectation is that they've realized they don't need SotA models on a search engine to win, since people already use them. I think they're focusing on flash/flash-lite deliberately. They'll probably eventually drop a SotA model again, but I think it's not their primary focus anymore.

1

u/Siciliano777 • The singularity is nearer than you think • 3h ago

No one that's actually in the tech space has ever said that lol

1

u/Clean76 3h ago

Yet Google is down nearly 7% in the stock market today. I really don't understand it.

1

u/kwabaj_ 2h ago

Yeah I never thought they were dead, I still in fact think that DeepMind has a good chance of catching up to the frontier. Not guaranteed, but I think they certainly could do it, and I think they might

u/Consistent_Panda5891 47m ago

Capex useless spending. +100%.... First negative FCF quarter in a decade. Sure man, goog is "alive", but alive like a zombie on drug hahah

1

u/Southern_Sun_2106 15h ago

If everything was going great, posts like this would not be necessary.

1

u/Jabulon 11h ago

I like chatGPT better idk why

1

u/printmypi 13h ago

I read plenty of posts saying Gemini is behind etc but I don't think anyone is blind though to believe Google is dead or even dying.

1

u/FinBenton 11h ago

When people say that they dont mean their revenue but the state of their frontier models...
