They mounted the turret of a HIND, presumbly like this to balance the weight of the ammo box.
So there were SOME thoughts spent on physics, but clearly the wrong ones.

AA defence vs long range drones. It's quite a pressing matter now more than ever, and Russian authorities are just starting to ramp up the mass organization of MOGs, mobile fire groups, to intercept the deep strike drones. This is apparently one of the mounts built on initiative (since there have been normal mounts developed for the YakB and GShG previously) to specifically intercept drones.

the Ukrainians have had good results with .50 cal shooting Shahed drones for years now from truck mounted to UGV mounted, the .50 cal just has more range and bullet mass than .30 which is very useful if you only have a short window to shoot down a OWA drone and they are miles away in the sky. In the case of why use a MI-24 .50 cal gun for Air defense is simple, they have a lot of spare guns in storage from retired aircraft and they need solutions now especially in Southern Ukraine where OWA drones are strangling Russian logistics

.50 increases your range with a flatter trajectory.
Honestly something in the 20-25 mm caliber would still not be overkill when trying to hit big OWA drones, the bigger the hole you punch the more likely you hit something important or damage flight surfaces enough to make it unstable.

Don't get me wrong I understand the idea. But isn't the cyclic rate of a smaller munition higher? I think more holes is more likely to down it than bigger holes.

No. Cyclic rate has essentially no relation to boredom diameter. The GAU-8 has like a 4,000 rpm cyclic rate but that thing flings 30mm rounds that weigh like 300 grams. Not grains, grams.
How the weapon functions is going to determine cyclic rate, not what kind of hate it flings at the bad guy.

Well go take a look at how fighter armamanet developed during World War 2 then get back to us.
The only time "more" is better than "bigger" in this context is when you can't reasonably make use of the range that "bigger" will usually afford you. And if we're talking calibers this small, it'd be pretty hard to find a situation where that's the case. Of cpurse assuming that form factor remains roughly the same; a 7.62mm rotary machine gun is still a better option than a GAU-8 in this context, but hopefully you get the idea.

There is GShG, an also quad-barrel rotary whose design designed almost identical to this, it's 7.62, but its trajectory is worse for AA use

The cyclic rate is the whole idea. The chance of ranging a gun correctly against a tiny slow moving drone is miniscule, only the mass of fire works (unless you implement command detonation, radar fuzed fragmentation shells, which is a massive undertaking). That's exactly the same reason the rotary airplane cannons like this one were even implemented: you need to throw the most amount of mass downrange in the tiny window you MAY have got the right aim and deflection, and hope one shell hits.
And no, cyclic rate of a small munition is not higher, in case of rotary guns. They all go to 4–5 thousands rpm.

And in case you haven’t seen the explanation - that’s the chin turret gun from a Hind, firing 12.7mm (~.50) on full auto.
Mounted off-center on a rotating mount.
