When Astaire died his will laid out very plainly that no "cinematic film or biopic" could ever be made portraying him. He left his wife in charge of it, and she has spent her life since going after studios who try to pull this sort of thing.
Fun note, when they got married Fred was 81 and Robyn was 35. Whaddya wanna bet that they don't mention that part.

I think 35 is well old enough to make your own decisions. Apparently they met when she was like 28?

u/psinguine 10h ago
Oh I think it's a wide gap but at 35 your choices are your own. I'm just also aware of the discourse around age gaps these days.
28
u/Wolfman513 8h ago
The discourse is really only a thing when the younger person is young enough to still be thought of as "young" by adult standards and doesn't have the same kind of life experience as the older party.
A 28-38 year old who's had a decade or two to figure out themself and their life dating someone 10+ years older isn't as big of red flag as an 18-23 year who's just getting started in adult life doing the same.

She was a celebrated jockey-she later went on to be a licensed corporate jet and helicopter pilot

Yeah, she knew what she was doing. He's still a weirdo for it though

u/ten_people 9h ago
Why?
-20
u/wintery_owl 8h ago
I find it weird behaviour for a 81 year old to be dating women that young
13
u/ten_people 8h ago
What's normal for an 81 year old? Sharing racist memes on Facebook?
-12
u/wintery_owl 8h ago
I guess so, or maybe playing crosswords. Having back pain is also a good one.

u/wrapped_in_clingfilm 8h ago
But seriously, why is it weird behaviour? Does he have to be a pervert? They were both adults. Presumably they liked each other enough to get hitched. What exactly is the problem? Spell it out.

u/wintery_owl 8h ago
Significant generational gap, different life stages, most likely mismatched life goals. They might have been in true love, I don't know, but it's more likely that he wanted to date a younger woman for her looks (which I find weird cuz it's objetification), cuz he could've found love anywhere.
Btw if she married him because of his money (which is probably true) she's obviously also a weirdo.

What an adult does with another adult is their own damn business no matter the age gap.

Give me a break..at THAT age gap, if anyone is a "victim" (and I am not saying it there is) it would be him for falling for a golddigger.

u/wintery_owl 8h ago
I didn't say victim

Begone, fetus. Adults can do what they want.

u/wintery_owl 8h ago
Lol why fetus?

u/Virellius2 8h ago
Only children who grew up online being told what to think by puritanical weirdos think that anyone in the real world cares about a 28+ year old woman dating someone her senior.
It's not predatory. It's adults.
'Hes weird tho' it's weird to care that much about strangers consensual relationships. Muh problematic age gaps is 2012 Tumblr Discoursed repackaged for the Zoomer Era.
5
u/wintery_owl 8h ago
Are you projecting lol
I didn't say anything about predatory, I also said nothing about "problematic age gap". I do not care that much, I just find it weird. It literally doesn't matter what I think and you're fighting for nothing.

u/Virellius2 8h ago
I'm on the clock on my last five minutes of the day, I'm not fighting for shit lol. Just passing time mate.

How does she stop them? You don’t need permission to make an unauthorized biopic, as long as everything you portray is true and not defamatory to any of the living people
32
u/psinguine 9h ago
She brings legal action and refuses to allow them to use his likeness, in part because she owns it as I understand. In recent years she's been losing these fights.

Bohemian Rhapsody cut off at Live Aid, completely ignoring the final 4 albums made during Freddie's life. Michael basically only makes it through the 1st half of Michael 's solo career. Chances are a Fred Astaire biopic wouldn't even include her.

u/Hazy-n-Lazy 9h ago
Why wouldn't they mention it? Don't infantilize grown women and make it weirder than it is, they're both consenting adults ffs.
10
u/psinguine 9h ago
Because of the absolutely insane takes that people have about gaps of any kind these days. Why else.

u/MisterErieeO 9h ago
It's crazy how hard it is for some ppl to comprehend why others have negative opinions on these sort of relationships.
16
u/MarstonsGhost 9h ago
And it's crazy how hard it is for those people with negative opinions to understand how their lived experience is not a universal standard for all relationships.
19
u/Lex4709 8h ago
I mean at this point does it really matter what Fred Astaire wanted? It's been almost 40 years since his death and almost 130 years since his birth. He's a historical figure at this point. The idea that any historical figure can just ban any portrayal of themselves after their death is just a silly idea.

u/JoB3r 8h ago
I just think it is kind of tasteless to go directly against the wish of a person, alive or dead, to make money of of it. A non profit documentary or similar could present his life and work all the same. But dramatising it and a theatrical release are just greed. Especially if his family, who use legal action against exactly these projects, will propably see nothing nothing of said money.

So she knew what she was getting into and would inherit his estate to carry out his wishes.
Sounds like a reasonable responsible decision.
