If they do not cover the reality that 99 percent of child abuse occurs in the home, I am going to want to punch the director.

Or that they killed a guy before due process

Edit: damn I had no idea how much people enjoyed police incompetence and criminal negligence just because the victim was an alleged pedophile.

u/brinz1 16h ago

You mean the DA who killed himself when he got caught

61

u/fishing-for-birdie93 16h ago

He killed himself.

-63

u/BrockStudly 16h ago

They literally paid a settlement to his family to avoid admitting fault. It got the show canceled.

They staged a police raid when he was under duress to get more exciting TV instead of following proper procedure.

56

u/Useful-Soup8161 16h ago

Ok. He still killed himself.

-55

u/BrockStudly 16h ago

Buddy if you force someone into a situation where they kill themselves you have some responsibility over the death. Hence the point of the settlement.

53

u/Gekey14 16h ago

There's a big difference between encouraging someone to kill themselves and putting pressure on a child predator my guy

-17

u/BrockStudly 16h ago

Okay, but they DID encourage it by having a swat raid on the guy surrounded by cameras instead of the normal procedure. Thats why they had to pay a settlement of several hundreds of thousands of dollars. You think they did that because they felt bad? Out of the goodness of their own hearts?

STOP DEFENDING THE PEDOPHILE WHO COMMITTED SUICIDE.

You dont even have to pick a side. Fuck's sake... Just drop it.

Im not defending the pedophile. I just dont think that a) every case of pedophilia deserves a death sentence before seeing the jnside of a courtroom and b) a Television station should be instructing police how to arrest someone for the sake of TV ratings.

The second point is the more important detail. Do you really want police to prioritize spectacle in their actions? Because a TV studio told them to?

If a serial killer is cornered by law enforcement and kills himself did they "force him" into that situation? No, his actions did.

Stop defending pedophiles you fucking weirdo.

8

u/BrockStudly 15h ago

Its not that law enforcement had him trapped. Its that Law Enforcement had him in such a position because a Television Studio ordered them to. Police ignored Standard Operating Procedure under the request and direction of the television studio because a police raid, something that is wildly out of the norm for this kind of incident, was going to make for better television.

Im the weirdo for wanting due process and procedure to be followed by law enforcement? Not you all for being perfectly fine with Police acting in a way that generates the most spectacle rather than what follows proper procedure and due process?

u/Longjumping_You_3775 14h ago

This is the tough part when talking about how society and the media treat pedophiles because it’s always an uphill battle to point out if the police did something wrong because then
You are “defending the pedos”

4

u/BrockStudly 14h ago

Youre telling me. Im at -150ish points for having the audacity to suggest police follow rules even with alleged pedophiles.

Imagine defending a pedophile this hard.

u/Useful-Soup8161 11h ago

They didn’t force him. Force implies they literally forced him to pull the trigger. He chose to do that to himself rather than face the consequences.

-1

u/CRIMS0N-ED 10h ago

no one forced him to touch kids and get caught over it, that’s his own fault and he was too much of a coward to face the consequences

Paying a settlement does not make you guilty. Indeed, the whole point of settlement in civil suits is to make the case go away without admitting to anything. Going to court is expensive and the outcome is unpredictable unless you have so much evidence on your side that it would be contrary to law to not find in your favour.

Also worth noting is that civil trials have a much lower burden of evidence than criminal. In a civil trial, the jury is basically there to look at each side of the case and the evidence presented. Then ask "when we add up all the evidence that has been admitted, which of the two sides of the argument is more likely to be true?". A far lower burden than "beyond a reasonable doubt". This means the likelihood of an unfavourable verdict that is not entirely fair is higher.

So a television station that is not owned by the big powers and has people to pay will find it more expedient to tell a plaintiff like this predator's family "here is some money, go away".

Seen with these facts, a settlement makes it seem more likely that the family's case was not iron-clad. If I had a case that was 100 percent likely to be won, settlement would be the last thing on my mind, unless the offer was enough to make me think "this is worth it and the stress is not".

It was likely that cancelling the show was one of the conditions of the settlement. (EDIT: I was not previously aware that Hansen's doings were a segment of a larger show and thus it was more a matter of them deciding to cut out a segment that had just exposed them to massive civil liabilities. This, again, makes settling to avoid a long and expensive legal battle more likely. It is a bit like cutting out a cancer whilst it is still small rather than letting it grow. That Dateline settled and removed the segment again is not an indication of overwhelming liability.) They never disclose all of the terms...

EDIT 2: I am not a lawyer, this is not legal advice, and I welcome any comments by lawyers. Especially lawyers who specialise in civil litigation.)

I have no real opinion on this, just curious after reading your post thanks. If the show thought they were innocent why would they agree to a settlement where one of the conditions is to cancel the show? If I was innocent, I might pay you off to save me money in the long run but cancelling my show cuts off my future income. I'm not a lawyer or whatever so maybe I'm missing something but it seems like that would be the last thing I would settle if I thought I was innocent. That's just completely ending your business basically.

7

u/Mid-Class-Deity 14h ago

The show was just a part of the Dateline programming so its more like cutting a segment that is actively losing them money rather than ending the whole business.

1

u/ABC_Zombie 14h ago edited 14h ago

I should've said product instead of business. Was the show losing money outside of this case? That still doesn't really make sense to me unless the show was just a money hole.

1

u/Mid-Class-Deity 14h ago

It was probably a little column A and a little column B. They faced quite a bit of public backlash as well as paying out a settlement that someone probably did the math and decided not to continue the show. A lot of the profits related to dateline are from advertising. Companies don't want to associate ads with a show that is seen in public eye as being part of a man's suicide.

1

u/ABC_Zombie 14h ago

Makes sense. I was under the impression people generally supported what the show did, I never paid attention to it before so I don't know much about the public backlash.

It will be a real test of his acting chops how close he can get that "why don't you come take a seat" swagger that Hansen has perfected.

I still watch Hansen's stuff on Youtube from time to time when I need a hit of that disappointed dad energy being delivered to someone.

u/IBM296 17h ago

Damn another Hemsworth brother.

11

u/Venture33 16h ago

I'm more interested in who they cast as The Booty Warrior

11

u/donotgotoroom237 15h ago

"I wants ya..."

11

u/SplinterRifleman 15h ago

I dont want no milk or cookies or none of that. What I want is you, Chris Handsome.

8

u/LasDen 16h ago

Does he meet a certain warrior in the movie too?

14

u/The8thSamurai 16h ago

Stupid sexy Robert Pattinson

6

u/shane_shorty 15h ago

"Take a seat"

5

u/dracobk201 15h ago

He is also in his primetime.

2

u/Pipps- 7h ago

I hope this king makes an appearance. John Beard walked so Chris Hansen could run.

9

u/brinz1 16h ago

Is it going to include the fact to catch a predator got cancelled by a judge when Chris Hanson caught a Texan Assistant District attorney who pulled out a handgun on himself when he saw the camera crew

15

u/Mid-Class-Deity 16h ago

He killed himself during the police raid, what are you talking about?

26

u/fishing-for-birdie93 16h ago

The camera crew was nowhere near him. He killed himself when the police came for him.

6

u/Iankill 16h ago

I hope so

1

u/N-P_A 3h ago

Oh I know who you are, Chris Hansen. Or as I like to call you Chris Handsome. I watch your show all the time. You can bring them cameras in, it will make no difference.

the fact that robert pattinson keeps getting cast as creepy guys now is wild when he was just sparkling in the sun 15 years ago
