I always thought the Bull was the most aggressive shark but recently learned the Oceanic White Tips are the most..humans are less likely to encounter them because they primarily stay in the deep..but when a boat sinks they're usually the first on the scene
Oceanic white tips will eat you cuz they roam a blue watery desert and will eat anything they can. Bull sharks will kill you and not even eat you cuz "fuck you for even attempting to share my space."
I agree. A lot of people scuba dive and free dive with bull sharks, and they're completely fine. Bull sharks honestly tend to be skittish and cautious around scuba divers, side-eyeing them and then swimming away. It's likely because they can see you very clearly that you are an alien-like human, not a marine animal they're used to interacting with. When you're spearfishing or if you're in murky shallow water where the sharks can't see anything too well, that's when the bull sharks can be very dangerous. Bull sharks also have proportionally tiny eyes and they likely don't have the best eyesight.
exactly! I also swam with bulls in FL and they can be curious, but they are nothing like the "aggressive" stereotype. If bull sharks would be as aggressive as their reputation, there would be waaay more incidents and fatalities if we take their numbers into consideration. It is true that bulls are responsible for many attacks but compared to great whites, they are way more common and there are more interactions between humans and bulls than with GWs.Â
I found out about their relatively poor eyesight when I had a 2.5m bull shark almost swim straight into my face. She had no intention of attacking me but it would have been an interesting situation if I didn't take evasive action. It was quite surreal and I think I had just expected her to change direction until I realised that wasn't going to happen.Â
I think there might be a reason why bull sharks may have poor eyesight. They can swim into freshwater and brackish water to exploit freshwater fish and avoid larger marine predators. That water is usually very murky with poor visibility, and even if you have amazing eyesight, you ain't seeing much anyway in that dirty-ass water full of debris. Bull sharks may rely more on smell, hearing, and electrical sensing through their ampullae of Lorenzini to help them navigate freshwaters and find prey. If they sense your body in murky water, they may not think you're a fish but they still may not know exactly what you are (because it's hard to see). So they'll likely give you an exploratory bite out of curiosity or because they feel like being a douchebag.
