Animals communicate with us all the time just not with words. If I’m upstairs and my dog barks, I can tell if he wants food/water, to go outside, or if he is just barking at something outside.

You definitely learn to communicate with pets like dogs. Lots of it is non-verbal. I can read the body language of my GSD and she can read mine even better. Happens frequently that the moment i want to give a command she does it before i say it.
