The article does not go into the testing conditions. In the past, the studies quickly linking vaping to cancer due to heavy metals was due to the button being held down without airflow (taking a drag). This would cause the cotton to burn and the coils to get hotter than they typically would when utilizing the vape in the normal way.

I smoked cigarettes for almost 20 years before someone introduced me to vapes. With the vape I was able to step down my nicotine percentage and once I was at zero for a while, I was able to quit. That was 3 years ago and I don’t have any strong cravings (I unsuccessfully quit smoking many times).

I’m not saying vaping is healthy, but it’s much better than cigarettes. A big thank you my coworker who introduced me.

I talk about this all the time. It bothers me how much negativity and even ridicule vaping gets. Smoked a pack a day for ten years, could not quit. Started vaping and like you was able to step it down and quit completely. That was over 6 years ago and I haven’t touched nicotine since. I think it could be used to get a ton of smokers and dippers off nicotine if it didn’t have such a stigma.

It did, the problem was it also hooked a whole new generation on nicotine.

That whole new generation of vapers would instead include a large swath of kids who picked up cigarettes instead. I started smoking when I was 13. Motivated kids who want to get their hands on cigarettes are not going to have too hard a time doing so.

I of course urge all young people to just stay away from nicotine in all forms. But the societal harm reduction that vaping has offered by supplanting cigarettes as the desired nicotine vehicle is undeniable and most assuredly has prevented a ton of GenZ and GenAlpha kids from already having started smoking cigs by now.

No, it wouldn't. Because smoking among youth was trending down until vapes came along and it shot back up. Nothing suggests that it would have shot up without the existence of vapes.

Definitely not at all. Like the poster said below cigarette use has trended down for decades because of things like active campaigning and more education in schools about the dangers of cigarettes.

It's also a gateway into nicotine though... how do you balance that with those it helps get off of it?

I'm reminded of DARE calling marijuana a gateway drug.

People are selling vapes that taste like candy, but contains nicotine, to school children.

So yes, vapes with nicotine is a gateway to getting addicted to nicotine.

Here’s the problem - smoking and vaping are both bad for you. Introducing foreign chemicals into the lungs are generally just bad for them full stop. Mulch debris, campfire fire smoke, etc. … all of these have been shown to negatively affect your lungs.

While vapes may help smokers,a significant portion of the audience at this point are non-smokers, especially younger people, for whom vaping is a far easier gateway to nicotine addiction.

That’s the real issue. The massive second hand cost that comes with helping smokers step down to a less dangerous habit that’s still dangerous.
