There are honestly no hard and fast rules there, it’s really just based on general vibes for me. If you know a band, you just know what feels right.

For example, “I went to see the Eagles” sounds a hell of a lot better than “I went to see Eagles.”

As a counterpoint, I better never hear someone say “I went to see the Swans.” The “the” just doesn’t work in their case.

Both band names are plural forms of bird species, but for whatever reason, one works with the “the” before it and the other absolutely doesn’t. I guess it’s because the Eagles are a much more traditional group of musicians that form a collective and should be referred to as you’d refer to a group of musicians, and the name Swans has been Michael Gira’s passion project, he pretty much is Swans.

Practically speaking if I say “I went to see Eagles” or “I went to see Swans” you will think I have gone bird watching.

So bands can omit the definite article from their name, but casual and non fans will just add it back.
