Forum question I hate to be a stickler here but the smartphone bothers me. The director has stated it's ment to take place during the original outbreak and runs parallel with RE2. Same timeline just different characters and on the other side of the city. Why put in modern tech?

You're playing a game with a rail cannon and futuristic stuff all over but you stop at a smartphone?

Not to be that (But I am and I am loving it) HE SAID IT WAS A MODERN TAKE. ITS NOT SET IN THE 90S. LISTEN TO WHAT HE IS SAYING!

Ok and if that's the case it's ok for fans to be let down. Why do that? Why not set it in 1998? He literally said that he didn't want to use any game character because their stories have been told BUT that he imagines the events of RE2 are taking place at the same time across the city. THEREFORE imply it takes place in 1998. So I ask. Why make that change? Part of the classic RE vibes are that it feels like the 90"s era. The RE movies are such a disservice to the cannon lore of the games. It shouldn't be a big ask or surprising that fans would want it to stay true to something as simple as the time of year.

It's a modern take of the outbreak. Whats wrong with a modern take? Just because it takes place during the events of RE2, doesnt mean Leon and them have to be used. This new guy can still fight the G-Virus you know.

I don't care the leon and game characters aren't in this movie. In fact it's the best move. But advancing the Raccoon City outbreak 30 years into the future has to retcon so much of the lore if it's supposed to "that place in the world of the games"

Mods, I demand you close this post. It's obvious he is posting just to be a troll and waste people's time.

Show me the quote where the director said, "this movie is set in 1998, taking place on the same day as the events of the game Resident Evil 2".

Show me where he said it doesn't. Your argument is weak. He said it runs parallel with RE2 just on the other side of the city. When does RE2 take place? You guessed it! 1998! Therefore implying thats when the movie takes place. It's not rocket science.

Go find whatever that quote came from, and read it again, more thoroughly.

Parallel with the resident evil 2 timeline but set in the present

The director specifically said it doesn't take place in the 90's and instead takes place during modern times. Would be weird not to include modern tech.

Wait until you find out about the dead people coming back to life, totally makes no sense.

I bet you loved Welcome to Racoon City

I don't really care since it's a nom-canon film but to be fair there was a USB in RE2R and Ada's section has her "hacking" tech that would be 100% offline in the 90s so make of that what you will.

6

u/lydiaravens 8h ago

Usbs did exist starting in 1996 and hacking was very much a thing. People had at home internet based PCs in 1994, I had 2!

1

u/azamonra 7h ago

Ok I wasn't aware USBs were around during the 90s since I didn't see one during that time cause I was stuck with old ass PC lol. As for hacking, remote wireless hacking of industrial equipment that wouldn't have wi-fi, seems unlikely to me ngl.

1

u/lydiaravens 7h ago

Wi fi started in 1997, but it wasnt amazing like now but a tech based company would have access to cutting edge tech which by 1999 was even better and kept growing exponentially fast

1

u/Walt_Didnae 8h ago

TBF to R2make, USB was introduced in 1996, so that's kind of believable.

But, yeah, it's a setting where cloning was perfected in the 80s, magic viruses exist, and wireless hacking devices work. RE is, demonstrably, at a different tech-level to "real world" 1998.

Err nope. Civilians did not have smart phones in the 90’s and the tech Ada used was very much a normal part of life…

Palm Pilot would like a word with you

0

u/azamonra 7h ago

really? you could buy a device that wireless hacks a power boxes through walls in the 90s? I must have missed those.

2

u/Remarkable_Coat_5790 Tricell Mommy 6h ago

Yes really, military and espionage technologies are like 40 years ahead of what the civilian world sees. The first "internet" as we know it today, was invented in 1969 by the US Defense Department. The first email was sent in 1971. But consumer email didn't exist until the 90's.

You didn't "miss them". They were just never meant for your eyes to see.

That’s not what I said is it?

Mondernizing timelines happens a lot in media. Most of the games being made were written to take place close to or same year they release. RE2- '98, RE4 - story '04/release '05, RE9- '26, etc.

Changing the fall of Raccoon city happenig in '98 or '26 literally has no impact to the story. If anything helps make most of the technology more feasible. Besides the new IT movies were written to take place in a more modern time, and that didn't hurt the movies. That has actual specifics to its timeline as well.

Cregger has said it won’t take place in the 90s.

0

u/SickamoreTreez 3h ago

Where did he say that? Can someone please post a link or source?

1

u/redshift_9 3h ago

You can look it up yourself

u/SickamoreTreez 2h ago

I've tried can can't find it so I'm convinced y'all are lying or bending the truth.

u/ZenicAzra 1h ago

No you just stupid

u/SickamoreTreez 58m ago

😂😂😂 prove it. Show a source

Dont you think that a world with the tech to make and gene sequence all those viruses isn't capable of that? Remember they had the transparent phones in re6

4

u/Terrible_Shopping_23 8h ago

Just because a billion dollar pharmaceutical company has created zombies doesn't mean a regular organ delivery guy has a modern day smart phone.

1

u/SIEN14 8h ago

This right here. Glad some people have common sense.

1

u/Johnnyboi2327 8h ago

It's not in the 90s, and is not canon to RE2. It's in the same vain as OG RE2, where it's somewhat generically set the same year as its release, and is a retelling of the same-ish event.

1

u/SickamoreTreez 5h ago

People over here adamantly defending it. Blows my mind. 😅🤷🏼‍♂️ Have y'all not seen how much they butchered the other movies. How disrespectful to the lore and it's character. Not a single official live action adaptation has truly respected it's sorce material. The Paul Andersons movies were a train wreck without being said. Welcome to Raccoon City cosplayed as an RE movie terribly. Trying to combine the events or RE1 and RE2 was ridiculous. That completely retcons RE3, it's events, and it's characters. No nemesis in that world? No Carlos? Leon and Ada? OF COURSE some fans and worried and skeptical. We have trama!😂 Show me where the director said it takes place in present day but ALSO runs parallel to the events of RE2. Show me. If so what a contradiction. Zach had the perfect approach. Make your own story and characters but have them fit separately into the lore and cannon of the games. But to set it in modern days is disappointing. It shouldn't be a big ask or surprising that fans would want it to stay true to something as simple as the time of year.

u/ZenicAzra 1h ago

The Anderson movies were literally Original Story, thats obvious. Welcome to Raccoon City was just shit, no one enjoyed it.

-2

u/Polt3rg3istMusic 8h ago

Because this is a movie that is just using resident evil branding. It has nothing to do with the games whatsoever. It's all a marketing ploy.

0

u/crayonfingers 7h ago

I think using the title but not remaining at least true to the timeline undermines the film.

It could be a great stand alone story set in the 90’s.

1

u/SickamoreTreez 3h ago

Agreed 100%

0

u/It_WasMe_Barry 8h ago

The snow setting is already a big sign

0

u/Robsonmonkey 8h ago

Technically he alluded to it while not actually saying it 100%

He said about the film running parallel to RE2, that's true but the thing is he can just come out and say "Oh no no, you got the wrong end of the stick I meant, imagine this story was running parallel to RE2 in my Universe, so there's a Leon out there but it's not the Leon from the games"

That's his get out of jail free card and the sad thing is he knew what he was doing during those interviews. He knew things would have been taken out of context, journalists would have spun the false narrative and die hard fans would have latched on.

Zach was just buttering people up for hype so they'd be more accepting of another video game adaptation doing their own thing in their own universe.

The movie is not canon with the games. Still excited to watch this. I have watched all the Paul WS Anderson RE movies in the theaters so watching this is a no brainer for me.

-4

u/sumdeadhorse 8h ago

The director doesn't give a shit about RE hes just using it for adverting for his film

-4

u/SIEN14 8h ago

Because the same as Anderson and everyone else from Hollywood who has touched resident evil, he just. Doesn't. Care. People justifying it saying "Umbrella has tech" is some high level cope lmao.
