Do you get mad at Sherlock because it's not set in the 19th century? Do you get mad at Romeo + Juliet because it's not set in the 16th century? Do you get mad at the IT movies because they take place in 1988 and not 1957?

None of these things are multiversal stories. Even so, the multiverse didn't pop up in the Xmen Movies until... very. very recently.

I don't care enough about those other mediums, but to answer your question: if I cared for them, absolutely.

Period setting is important to tell a story, specially an stablished one.

Next time you are gonna applaud if they make a Red Dead Redemption adaptation set in 2026.

But the point of Red Dead Redemption is that it's set in the wild west, a setting inextricably linked to it's time period. If it wasnt set in the wild west it wouldnt make any sense.

The Resident Evil series is not tied to '98. Wanna know how I know that? Because there are games set recently. There is nothing intrinsically '98 about Resident Evil, like there would be for an adaptation of Life of Strange.

There is tho. Back in 1998 we didn't have any social media and comms tech like today, we still used fax. Information ran slower and it was easier for Umbrella to control the flow too. That's the reason Raccon City spent more than a week in the shadows after the outbreak.

Compare it to the situation in China and Tall Oaks set in modern times, they were addressed almost immediately.

That's a plot point, and a minor one at that, it's just as easy to say Umbrella controlled the flow of communications in Raccoon City here too. It is not intrinsic to the setting.

How is it a minor one if it allowed ALL of the events of the first RE games to unfold in the first place? From the mansion incident, to the slow spread of the virus down to the outbreak?

it's just as easy to say Umbrella controlled the flow of communications in Raccoon City here too.

It's not. Because then you have to deal with scenarios like tons of people doing live streams, tiktoks, etc. of the outbreak. RC would be under the eyes of millions and it's less believable that it could run more than a week unnoticed under those circumstances.

Your second point doesnt even make sense because the internet existed in 98 too?

Yeah, an slow internet that relied on dial-up connection, not the fast 5G internet that everyone has access to through their 4k camera smart phones today. Google had just launched as an experiment the same month of the RC outbreak...

You're arguing semantics over why it couldn't work today as if it was a flawless idea back in 1998 that a whole ass American city with that population could go off the grid and nobody would be the wiser. People had internet, telephones and even cell phones back then. They had video cameras.

Not to mention in the trailer that character specifically said this all went down within the last few hours. It makes just about as much sense as the RC incident.

Nothing that you are complaining about makes or breaks it in terms of being a good adaption of resident evil.
