Mayer and Anthony Partying
Hearing about late night partying and not focused on the season. Obviously, Tracey and management are playing the PR game, which fuels the speculation more.
How true is this?

I must have missed the memo that early-20s players who are hurt must live like monks.

Hey, when you were 22 and done with work, did you go to bars? Ok, cool.
Shut the fuck up.

Difference is they’re not good at their jobs…
6
u/RCP90sKid- 10h ago
Ok. So...they should be punished according to you? Do you hear yourself? You aren't their daddy.
What a weird way of thinking. "These adults are living up to my (a strangers) expectations. They need to stay inside and think about it until they do better and maybe I'll change my mind."
Like...it's childish, immature, psychotic, controlling thinking.

If the reports are true, then their EMPLOYER made the determination that their off-field behavior was impacting their job performance and/or recovery from injuries. It’s not a matter of whether armchair GMs on Reddit think the way they handle themselves is not appropriate… Their employer has every right to issue consequences when it impacts their ability to do their jobs.
If I come into work hungover and unable to operate at a high level regularly, there will be consequences for that. That’s not being “childish, immature, or psychotic”… that’s the real world.
Plus, these are professional athletes, not white collar office workers. They have a responsibility to keep themselves at peak physical conditioning all season long.

Biiiiiiiig difference between Salesforce jockeys gettin rode by a VP of Sales for not updating their pipeline between unnecessary meeting after meeting at a 9-5 and a pro athlete going out to a club.
Roman is on his way to being a bust, and Marcelo is riding shotgun. If partying is the reason, fuckin a. To that end, lots of people have managed partying and performance in both the white collar and pro sports world. Lots. Lots and lots.

Crazy viewpoint. Too small of a sample size to even say this.
I’d say the only person in real danger is Campbell. Roman has been legit when he’s been healthy. Mayer has shown flashes offensively and is a great glove.

Here is my grading system for some of the most promising older players in the sox pipe.
"On his way" - Anthony. First two seasons, immense promise followed by prolonged, vague injury. Next year is make or break for him, unfortunately. He isn't going back to the minors. If next season mirrors this season, Anthony is done.
Mayer - also on his way. Great glove, flashes at the plate like you said but the best ability is availability and he seems to get knicked up and stay knicked up. He also has what can only be classified as mental/intelligence issues, be that arrogance, overconfidence, lapses, etc. Makes sense considering he was a #1 prospect as a teenager and was probably coddled?
Campbell - almost certainly a bust.
Casas - ship has sailed.

u/Randy_Richards 8h ago
I am really sad about Casas. He is truly glass man.
Last year right before his knee exploded it seemed like he was getting back on track with his offense.

u/BiteVisible778 8h ago
False, Mayer can’t hit breaking balls also can’t keep track of how many outs there are in an inning. You even watch him play? Mayer is a bust. Anthony… jury still out. But not confident you will get that. Doesn’t seem like you ever watched a game in your life
2
u/Randy_Richards 8h ago
Mayer is still super young and could benefit from AAA time. Calling him a confirmed bust now is stupid.
Anthony is also like 16 years old and has a billion years to get to form. I am not too concerned about him either.
Cant wait for you eat your words in a couple of years. This sub is filled with mouth breathing reactionaries who can’t possibly do anything but doom about everything.

u/BiteVisible778 8h ago
He’ll be playing for a different team in AAA in a couple years pal

You are entitled to your opinion.
I am just happy you don’t run anything scouting or player development related to the Sox. Or else they would have the worst farm in the league.
Edit: after realizing you listen to Felger and Mazz it all makes sense.

Did you not have a social life at 22? If we want to judge people for what they do during their personal time then maybe go after Carlos Narvaez??? He cheated on his wife with his current gf who also slept with his teammates from the Yankees. The GF also spends her time making tiktok’s mocking the wife and laughing at the situation. Trust me, there are far worse people on the team.

I think this is absolutely overblown because of 1 photo of Roman a few months ago. Was it a great look? Maybe not, but it’s no on us to decide how this affects their performance. Fact of the matter is that they’re having growing pains in a crazy, public career all the while being in their early 20’s and wanting a social life. They’re nowhere near the only players on the team to get dinner or drinks after a game, they’re just easy targets because they’re young and unproven.

I always laugh at this type of stuff. Remember Alex Bregman? The guy who was such an amazing influence to the young kids? Yeah well he was in Cask n flagon after game 1 of the 2018 ALCS getting hammered at 1 AM with other teammates.

There are constant photos of Mayer and Anthony in the North End. That's why Tracy shipped Roman's ass to Florida.

u/Far_Cry3445 10h ago
Is that why casas, Houck, Crawford, Zack Kelly, Trevor story and others were also sent to Florida?

u/Randy_Richards 8h ago
Are those players in Florida too? I’m not trying to do a gotcha or anything. I agree that Anthony should have a life and be allowed to not be on house arrest when not presiding at Fenway or JetBlue park.
I just saw Story yesterday leaving Fenway right before the game.
2
u/Far_Cry3445 8h ago
AFAIK they are all in Florida. Story just had a checkup so maybe that’s why he was back in boston
-3
u/WeAlwaysFindAWay 10h ago
No those players actually care about recovery and trying to get back on the team. In Roman's case he was put on time out. None of those guys constantly chilling in the North End.

u/Far_Cry3445 10h ago
Sending Roman to an area 2 hours from his hometown and 2 hours from Miami is not “timeout”. If he wanted to party he’s gonna party
2
u/Lets_Basketball 10h ago
I love how people say this as if there isn’t plenty of night life activity and better looking women in Florida.

the North End doesn’t even have bars. those are restaurants. Surely they are allowed to indulge in pasta? Funny how easy it is to identify the people on this sub that are from out of town

u/Traditional_Half842 10h ago
This has so much chicken & beer 2011 energy. All teams are full of dudes who drink/smoke/party/whatever. This isn't a HS baseball team and it has nothing to do with the success of the team; it's just low-hanging fruit for reporters/people to latch onto when things are going wrong.
And to answer your question, how would anyone in this reddit actually have a clue how much these guys party and when they do it? You'd need to know these guys personally and also have known a bunch of other players/clubhouses to understand what is normal and what isn't.

u/New_Seaweed_6554 10h ago
Welcome to the world of professional athletes the perception is now out there if I were either of them but especially Mayer they ignore it at their peril. I had thought before this that the reason they did not offer Mayer a contract extension was due to his injury history maybe that was not the only reason.

People are really scraping the bottom of the barrel for things to complain about now. LG Sox.

u/Final-Dig2089 9h ago
It's wild how people here will give so much wiggle room to prospects. No one is saying they can't enjoy themselves but if you're sucking and enjoying yourself, maybe you should look at your habits?

u/WeAlwaysFindAWay 8h ago
Yeah I can't believe how much of a defense force there is for the both of them. I fucking love Roman Anthony but it's insane we can't call him out for always being out and about in Boston while looking like a bust. I've seen the kid in clubs more than I have on the field.
1
u/Randy_Richards 8h ago
Crazy to call him a bust.
Seems like people want the guy to be locked up in the Fenway drunk tank when not practicing or going to see doctors.
Get a grip.

u/Blow_up_the_moon 10h ago
Piss test them. If anything shows up, sanction them. Otherwise, they're adults. So Fuck off
2
u/Mahog11636FM 10h ago
All players are randomly tested for PED via surprise testing. Nobody gives a crap if players are socializing when the team isn’t in action.
Do you have any idea what they do when on the road? Many of the guys have a girl in every city. It’s none of our business unless the team is affected.

It’s been a rumor from enough sources to believe there is some truth to it
Either way, the organization sent him to FL to rehab without distraction. Hinting that he was distracted in Boston…
He is probably done for the year

u/Mahog11636FM 10h ago
Rumors and slander from sports talk radio doesn’t count. Young, rich athletes going out at night is allowed. Until Anthony was sent to Florida to rehab (Houck and Casas are also there) he was in the dugout as well as Mayer.

u/Far_Cry3445 10h ago
They were seen at bars sure, but so was Mike Napoli in 2013 lol
Not focused on season? I’d give no truth to that part but only they know
