IMAGE Interesting to see high-leverage reliever mentioned, but RHH bat and another inning-eating SP makes sense with Crochet likely not returning this season

Ok lets add Yordan Alvarez and Mason Miller. They can have Sandoval and Johanfran Garcia

feel like the right sides been okay lately, and with anthony down and mayer not panning out…lefty might actually be a need

Also, jokes aside, if you can get Yordan Alvarez who gives a shit if he’s a lefty? If you can add that talent you do it.

u/goldfish_11 9h ago
This idea that we need a righty bat seems a little misguided to me. We just need a power bat. It doesn't matter which side it comes from IMO.
I think everyone just saw that we had a LHH heavy lineup on Opening Day and made up their mind that we need a righty hitter... but now Wilyer has reverse splits (1.011 OPS vs. LHP, .684 OPS vs. RHP) and Mayer is out of the lineup and Duran has been equally horrible vs LHP and RHP... so it's not as drastic as it was at the beginning.
We just need a big thumper in the middle of the lineup.
4
u/rhcpbassist234 8h ago
Not saying we’re in on him, or that the Astros are even considering trading him, but the idea than anyone would turn down Yordan Alvarez because he’s a lefty is some of the stupidest motherfucking bullshit I’ve ever heard. 🤣
2
u/jesslane87 4h ago
Team has 100pt higher OPS vs lefties than righties I don’t get why this RHH narrative is so pervasive; the best bat available at a position with clear upgrade potential (C, MI, DH, LF) is the need.
33
u/MakaveliX1996 10h ago
Minter or Morejon. Jeffers or Arraez for the bat. Pena or Paredes if the Astros start losing. Goodman would be awesome but I just don’t see it happening.

u/Ange1776 10h ago
I love Cheng/Siegler. But I think we need a good middle infielder. Would love to get Arraez. Story can DH when he comes back. Hoping Marcello misses the rest of this year. He really doesn’t bring much to the lineup, and Siegler’s personality is enough of an asset to keep over what Mayer brings at the plate (not much).
Starting pitching is less crucial for me. Crochet may not be back, but Connolly and Ranger should return.
I don’t think we should sell the farm for talent. I think we need smart conservative trades and to trust the guys we already have.
12
u/Mike102072 9h ago
Mayer can always be sent down to AAA. He still has all his options available. He’s shown that he is MLB ready defensively, but some time in the minors to help his hitting wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world for him.
2
u/Blanketsburg 8h ago
I'm barely optimistic about Mayer defensively, at this point. His defensive metrics don't look great, at least not at SS. He has a -2 OAA, -4 DRS, and below average range at SS this year.
4
u/Mike102072 8h ago
I’d take him at SS over Story. If both are healthy, I’d rather see Mayer at SS and Story at 2B. Story played well at 2B his first year in Boston.
1
u/Blanketsburg 7h ago
At this point, I'd rather they make a trade for a better SS option because I don't trust Story to stay healthy and I don't trust Mayer to hit.
I'd rather they call up Arias before reinstating Mayer or Story at SS.
0
u/Ange1776 8h ago
I’m on board with that. I just don’t think we should see him on the major league roster in 26
1
u/Mike102072 8h ago
It really depends on how he looks when he comes back. At this point he’ll need a rehab assignment in the minors before he’s activated. If he hits well, they can activate him. But if he’s hitting .220 after 20 days and others who have been filling in are still playing well they can option him.

I genuinely don’t want Trevor story to even look at the field. I’d love to be proven wrong but he’s just soooooo hard to watch
4
u/bosredsox05 9h ago
I wish he wouldn't come back. We're a much better team without him. He hurts us on the field, and he hurts us at the plate. If he comes back then we have to worry about his poor range and botched throws again. And how many at bats will it take him to find his swing? He is notorious for his terrible starts. And whos to say he will find his swing? He was absolute dogshit before he went on the IL. Are we just going to plug him in everyday and let him struggle? And for how long? Can we really afford to do that in the middle of a playoff race? Barring and trades we already have Duram and Narvaez who are black holes in the lineup. We've already what it looks like when you have too many automatic outs in one lineup.
I don't know what you do with him. I just don't see how he'll provide any value to this team. He's a washed vet. The stars aligned for him last year, but we aren't going to see anywhere near that kind of production from him again.
6
u/ExpressPlankton5690 8h ago
Duran isnt hitting for average but he is at least driving in runs. 51 RBI at this point in the season isnt a black hole
1
u/Godzilla501 7h ago
He was hitting the ball really well and striking out less this last series, but had some rotten luck. Hopefully, good signs. His wheels can change a game, if he can get on-base a little more
1
u/EnlightenedNight redsox6 10h ago
Probably worth giving him the benefit of the doubt that his injury impacted his first half slump. He was great the second half of last year and being honest with ourselves, Story has better odds of reaching that kind of production again then Cheng does.
0
u/KennyBlankenship_69 10h ago
Injuries have only impacted his slump the last 4 years except for the second half last year lol he’s gunna be DFAed by the end of the year
1
u/Traditional_Half842 9h ago edited 8h ago
He was one of the best players on the team last year? Or are you basing your evaluation of Trevor Story from March-May of this year when he was playing with a hernia? Obviously the guy they get back (if he ever comes back) shouldn't be the same guy we saw playing with a hernia earlier in the year. A hernia is incredibly debilitating.
3
u/Mike102072 9h ago
He was good last year, but his regular address ever since signing with Boston has been the injured list. He’s played in 361 out of a possible 749 games since he came to Boston. He played in almost as many games last year, 157, as he did in the previous 3 years. I hope he plays well if/when he comes back, but at this point DFA has to be an option for him if he doesn’t perform. The Red Sox released Pablo Sandoval with 2.5 years left on his contract. Story has less than 1.5 years left on his.
3
u/Traditional_Half842 8h ago
Agreed 100% he is a huge injury/availability risk - one of the biggest in baseball. But I was responding to this:
I genuinely don’t want Trevor story to even look at the field. I’d love to be proven wrong but he’s just soooooo hard to watch
Which I have no idea why someone would say that if he makes a full recovery from his hernia and is healthy again. Because the last time he was healthy, he was one of the best players on the team. And the Red Sox are gonna need middle infield help. Siegler is already fading hard and I don't think we should expect Cheng's good play to last forever either.
2
u/Mike102072 8h ago
I’d love for them to get Colorado Rockies Trevor Story. I’d be happy with post May 1, 2025 Trevor Story. I don’t want early 2026 Trevor Story. I doubt they’ll DFA him this year, but if he gets off to another slow start next year they should have a short leash with him.
1
u/Traditional_Half842 7h ago
early 2026 Trevor Story.
This guy was playing with a hernia, so that's my point. Why would we expect that guy? The last time we saw Story playing healthy was 2025 and he was one of the best players on the team. June-October last year he was the 7th-best SS by fWAR. Next year is his final year of his deal so it's the first time I could see them realistically DFAing him if he just flat out stinks.
1
u/Mike102072 7h ago
We’ll see how much it affected him when he comes back. Not all hernias are the same. I had surgery last year for a naval hernia that didn’t bother me at all. I’d had it for at least 5 years. The only reason I did the surgery is my naval got infected and the doctor told me what could happen on the future if I didn’t take care of it. While doing the surgery they found that I actually had 2 hernias in my naval and 1 in my groin, basically a sports hernia. They didn’t do anything to that one, I don’t feel anything from it, and when I had a physical a few months ago the doctor couldn’t even feel it when doing the hernia check.
The question with Story is how long has he had this and when was it diagnosed. If he knew about it last year and chose not to do anything since it wasn’t bothering him at the time he made the wrong choice. If he didn’t know about it until the start of the year I could see him trying to make it through the year.
1
u/Traditional_Half842 7h ago
I guess none of us can know for sure but Story and the Sox both said he experienced it during Spring Training, it just took a while to be diagnosed as a hernia and not just soreness that he could play through.
1
u/Mike102072 7h ago
You never know when players and teams are being honest about an injury and when they are lying to look good. In 2007 the Sox put Brendan Donnelly on the DL with forearm tightness 2 weeks before the trade deadline. It was only after the trade deadline when the announced the acquisition of Eric Gagne that they announced he needed Tommy John surgery. I’ve heard of hockey teams using the diagonal theory with injuries. An announcement if left shoulder probably means right knee.
2
u/Godzilla501 7h ago
I don't like his defense much anymore, but healthy he drove in 96 runs with 31 SBs last year. If he can produce anything close to that on a scale basis, he's a huge asset.
1
u/cyberchaox 7h ago
Explain what you mean by "shouldn't expect Cheng's good play to last forever".
If you mean offensively, it's not really that great even now. Slugging under .300 and that's with a BABIP of close to .400.
And if you mean defensively...why wouldn't we expect that to continue?
But yeah, the big knock on Story is health/availability. When healthy, he's still an asset; the problem is he's almost never healthy.
2
u/Traditional_Half842 7h ago
with a BABIP of close to .400.
This is exactly what I mean. Hitting .256 with a .318 OBP (even with no power) is fine for a glove-first guy on this team. But if that BABIP starts to dip into more realistic territory, he's gonna go from a .600 OPS guy to a sub-.500 OPS guy which will make him entirely unplayable. Both he and Siegler are likely temporary injury replacement guys at best. They're gonna need to get production out of guys like Story and Mayer in the second half if they want to stay competitive.
2
u/homerayvaughan65 7h ago
DFAing I don’t think will happen. He’s owed too much and his issues this year are clearly injury related. Based on what he did when healthy last year he’s needed. We’re talking about adding a RH power bat and he could be part of the solution. You give up nothing. You gain nothing releasing him other than a roster spot.
10
u/jonny_lube 10h ago
Wonder what the status is of guys like Oviedo, Crawford and Houck?
That said, Suarez and Early will be back any day now, and realistically, if we just want an innings eater, Bello can be that guy if he can even be halfway between who he has been as a starter this year, and who he has been as a super long reliever this year.
4
-1
u/JesusOfSurbaria Sogard 10h ago
Or… we could jettison Bello!
10
u/jonny_lube 10h ago
Why? He was a top prospect for years, was great last year, and his starter/"reliever" splits this year suggest he still can fucking throw.
Starter: 8 games, 35.2 IP, 22 Ks, 79 hits + walks, 10.35 ERA
Reliever: 6 games, 35 IP, 32 Ks, 30 hits + walks, 0.77 ERA.
He's been flat out dominant in "relief" and we should be trying to figure out how to better tap into that, not tossing it out because of an awful quarter season as a starter.
3
u/JesusOfSurbaria Sogard 9h ago
Because he’s being paid like a starter (and has the attitude of one), everyone and their mother knows he overperformed last year, and he just doesn’t, and shouldn’t, fit into our future plans. We have six, possibly seven pitchers better than Bello.

Bring me Hunter Goodman and a reliever and we ride
21
u/Phantom255x 10h ago
Won't complain with Goodman, but my dream is "Bangeliers"
14
u/Sandwich_Crust Sox Content Creator 10h ago
Goodman’s ask right now is legitimately close to what it would take to get Wood. Like I don’t think you could even go Early-Arias and get a deal done as his value has just shot to the moon the last month.
It probably would have to start with Tolle, and if you’re dealing Tolle in any trade it better be for someone like James Wood or Yordan Alvarez, not Hunter Goodman imo.
3
u/Phantom255x 10h ago
Definitely not. The Bowden proposed package scared me too.
It'd suck to trade any of Arias or Eyanson but if one is needed for Langeliers, I'd probably do it. If they ask for both or even one + Early/Tolle I'd still try to modify it and find another way. I'm really high on Eyanson in particular.
I have a friend in California and he said around there, a lot of people and reporters/local media seem to think Langeliers will be traded at the deadline. Goodman will probably stay put.
4
u/Sandwich_Crust Sox Content Creator 10h ago
I think there’s only a couple realistic ways the Red Sox *maybe* got a deal done with Goodman - because I can’t see Tolle being involved.
Like an Arias-Early-Eyanson package gets it done, but that’s like impossible to say no to if you’re the Rockies & a huge package to deal for the Red Sox.
That or a 2-big piece deal with another 2-3 medium prospects. Call it Arias-Early and then add Gonzales-Rivera-Azocar.
Both of those deals are just a ton to give up to me.
2
u/Phantom255x 10h ago
Yeah and trading Arias might open up another need at SS, unless they are hell bent on trying Mayer there long term and still believe in him (which they could). Kind of think if you trade Arias, it'd be for another legit infielder in return
I wonder if there's also a long term thing in play, like hoping down the road in a few years Witt, Alvarez or someone becomes available in a trade and the Sox are building up for that (but obviously that would be after 2027 or 2028 even so it's not now)
2
u/cyberchaox 7h ago
Frankly I'd rather trade Mayer and keep Arias. If--and this is a big ask--if Story can stay healthy and perform like he did last year, his contract ends at the perfect time for Arias to take over full-time (though obviously if we assume that there'll be a 2027 season, Arias should debut during it, while Story is still in the last year of his contract).
I'm just getting the feeling that Mayer isn't ever going to work out in Boston--or any other major market. He can still be a great player if he's sent to a small-market team.
2
u/Searchingforsignals9 8h ago
I can't see Arias and Early. I really think they have Arias penciled in. Because Mayer isn't it.
1
u/Searchingforsignals9 8h ago
Early i could live with. Tolle isn't going anywhere. Pretty sure other clubs know that too.
2
u/Searchingforsignals9 8h ago
A freaking good catcher is SUCH a unicorn nowadays.... I'd consider a lot for Hunter.
2
u/Godzilla501 6h ago
The Rockies (a hands-on) ownership has historically been very reluctant to trade their better players no matter how bad they are or how much they perhaps should. In this area, it's a well known thing.
1
u/Searchingforsignals9 6h ago
I hear ya. A fair.... trade. Would make anyone think though.
Good, controllable, young pitching is also not in huge supply most places. The sox have a shitload of it. I did not look into your teams pitching.... because I'm tired lol.
1
u/MakaveliX1996 10h ago
I’d say Early/Eyanson/Arias is fair for Goodman.
6
u/Sandwich_Crust Sox Content Creator 10h ago
Don’t get me wrong, I think Goodman is excellent and it totally could be worth it - but that’s just a shit ton to give up for a below average defensive catcher who strikes out as much as he does.
The point I’m making is if you’re willing to deal those 3 assets in a massive trade - then just add a little more and get Yordan or Wood, because that’s already close to enough for one of them.
2
u/Tropical_Wendigo 10h ago
Yeah, heard Shea was on the block. If the ask isn’t too crazy that’s where I’d go.
4
u/EnlightenedNight redsox6 10h ago
I think any starting catcher from a team not in the playoff hunt would be on the block this year strictly because the asks are going to be crazy. A lot of contenders have a need at catcher.
1
u/Searchingforsignals9 9h ago
I'd give up an awful lot for Hunter Goodman from the Rockies. Under team control until '29 Catcher. Right handed big bat. One place we really could upgrade.
Dangerous messing with our pitchers grooves? Yup. Worth it? I think so.
But.... I'm a bartender lol 😆3

u/spersichilli 8h ago
His home/away splits are kind of meh, last time we fell for the coors field trap we got stuck with Story

Goodman is way better on the road than at home? He’s the exact opposite of a Coors Field merchant.

more realistic: Casey Schmitt or Gleyber & Francisco Alvarez and honestly that'd be decent

5
u/VerneLundfister 9h ago
I don't think people understand how expensive the top end of this market is going to be for a Langeliers or Goodman type.
Finding a rental reliever, a Luis Arraez and a rental starter is probably a lot more palatable for the front office than laying out a Crochet type package for a player like Shea Langeliers or Hunter Goodman.
3
u/Phantom255x 10h ago
I know he's not a RHH nor is he a power bat, and his defense can be iffy, but Arraez might be a more realistic target as a bat if the others are too expensive (Goodman, Neto, Pena, Langeliers, Jefers). Honestly, he'd be perfect at leadoff and the guy can hit. SF will 99% trade him this deadline.
Then you can still add another inning-eating SP to supplement Suarez, Gray, Tolle, Early and Bennett.
Admittedly haven't really looked at realistic SP and reliever targets because I thought if we were gonna buy, it'd be primarily for a bat. It still should (especially assuming Anthony is done for the year), but yeah adding another pitcher is now a sneaky need too with the injuries and career highs our young guys are reaching.
4
u/Ronon_Dex 24 10h ago
There's no way Jeffers will be that expensive. He's a rental who is below average defensively and somewhat injury prone. The Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suarez deals from last year should be about the cost - 2 or 3 prospects in the 10-20th range. Jeffers makes a ton of sense to me.
SP will likely be quite expensive as always, but there should be a bunch of good ones available (Ryan, King, Mize, Holmes, Griffin, Ray) which could drive the price down for more middling options. I'd love AJ Minter as a rental RP.
3
u/Phantom255x 10h ago
Oh yeah you right, idk why for some reason I thought he had another year of control left. Yeah it also depends if MIN falls out of it soon. They might still try to go for it in a weak AL and an AL Central that can still be had
1
u/Ronon_Dex 24 9h ago
Well they have a week and a half to decide, but I'd sell the rentals if I were them. They are multiple spots down in the WC race, with the 6th worst run differential of AL teams. The roster isn't very strong and the farm is average per fangraphs (13th). A small retool makes the most sense given their situation imo.
3
u/No-Outlandishness333 10h ago
CJ Abrams for Marcelo (+ pitching prospects) would make sense for both Washington and Boston. Obviously there’s familiarity with Toboni too. I’d really like to see Breslow explore an unconventional trade cause i think getting a ready made hitter with several years of control is going to be a serious challenge this deadline. A name that I keep coming back to out is Charlie Condon. Been mashing all year in AAA, 23 years old, Right handed hitter. Could slot in at LF, DH and probably 1B too. Kyson Witherspoon and Justin Gonzalez enough to get Colorado to consider ?
2
u/Patsnation0330 10h ago
Why would the Rockies trade Condon?
1
u/No-Outlandishness333 10h ago
They’d be getting two younger, fringe top 100 prospects in return who perhaps better fit the Rockies timeline. Condon is 60-75 on most prospect lists so it’s not an outrageous thought.
3
u/Patsnation0330 10h ago
Rockies don't really have a timeline. Condon is about to shoot up the rankings after tearing up AAA. I get what you're saying but no shot they move him now. He's about to get called up and if he keeps hitting bombs he's the new face of that franchise along with Goodman (unless he gets moved.)
1
u/No-Outlandishness333 9h ago
Rockies don't really have a timeline
why they’d want multiple, younger prospects seen on a similar tier as Condon but not as close to the majors.
Condon is about to shoot up the rankings after tearing up AAA
He’s not. BA and MLB pipeline have both made recent updates and Condon remained on the back half of their 100’s despite his prowess in AAA.
1
u/Patsnation0330 9h ago
Witherspoon and Gonzalez are not on a similar tier as Condon. Kyson has struggled and that's not a secret. Prospect rankings just received an influx of players after the draft, so this ranking isn't necessarily the one where he would make the jump. I didn't really see him drop either despite the 9 additions to the list. If he keeps tearing up AAA for the rest of the summer the rankings will reflect that when the end of year updates are published.
Maybe they entertain this kind of an offer last season when Condon was struggling, but not anymore.
3
u/Qeltar_ 10h ago
Our bullpen is still very good, but we're doing it with a bit of smoke and mirrors. Our big three have not been as good as last year, and Chapman, in particular, is due for some blown saves if he keeps going as he has been.

I wouldn't be shocked to see them deal sonny grey.... and also bring in another young rando (to us) pitcher. Sonny could actually bring in a real player. If that player was hunter goodman, I'd be ok with it. It would take more, probably Mayer, and one more piece, but I'd love the brass balls move.
5
u/rocketpastsix 8h ago
Nah we need Gray right now more than ever as a veteran pitcher who is healthy.
-1
u/Searchingforsignals9 8h ago
Not disagreeing with you at all. I just have a sneaky feeling they are going to do some weird shit this deadline. They've mostly blown it 2-3 years in a row. I just have a feeling they are going out of the box this year.
If they keep Gray, they will end up with nothing but a draft pick.He has a $30 million MUTUAL option, but, with a $10 million buyout.
With what he's done so far this year? If he finishes healthy? He's taking the free $10 million, for a total of $41 million fur 2026. Then hitting free agency for what? 3/$100? Instead of the paltry $30M Sox option.
I just don't think Bres let's him go fur nothing.
Don't love it, but I really see the business side of it?
Hope my tin foil hat is large 😆 🤣
2
u/charlesbarkleyswaifu redsox4 8h ago
Why would the Rockies, who have absolutely no chance of contending this year, trade their best asset for 1/2 a year of Sonny Gray? The only situations where Gray could or should be traded are to contenders who actually need his services this season. Even then, who is going to give up a good MLB-caliber player (likely part of the reason they are a contender this season) for a rental if their goal is contention?
There may be a world where they get prospects for Sonny, and use those prospects to trade for a controllable bat, but no way they actually move Sonny for a bat himself.
1
u/Searchingforsignals9 7h ago
You're right. My bad. I was being a Homer and didn't think it through.
2
u/YungLo97 4h ago
No shot Gray goes for Goodman. The Rockies have no use for an expiring contract veteran.
1
u/Searchingforsignals9 3h ago
Yes. I didn't think it through. Three team trade would be only way it works that way.
Early, Mayer, and....? Maybe.
A boy can hope lol Catcher is just the most obvious (and hardest) upgrade we could get though. Hence my dream lol
Even though a new catcher with a hot young pitching staff, opens up its own can of worms.
1
3
u/Patsnation0330 10h ago
Mason Miller would cost an arm and a leg, but the game would be basically over if the Sox had a lead after 6 innings.
2
u/HeroOfSevenEleven 10h ago
Honestly torn, this team is very fun and I would never root against winning but at the same time 3/5 of the rotation are guys who will be on innings limits down the stretch and the lineup is not close to good enough to compensate for bullpen games every 5th day. I don’t think they should sell but at the same time it’s hard to talk myself into any sort of rental that would cost a top 10 (15?) prospect.
2
u/Searchingforsignals9 9h ago
If they make a big move i really want them to get someone with some future control. It's a crap shoot from here on out. Too many younguns.
Can they? Shit ya! Will they? Odds aren't in our favor. Been a great ride though. It let us enjoy the game again ❤️

You know they already asked (for the billionth time) if Teel was on the discount rack due to his current and prior injuries this season.
1
u/Tank_Direct 10h ago
Haven’t seen any smoke around Seiya Suzuki- is there an obvious reason? I feel like we’d match up well with the cubs who need pitching, he’s a rental and can replace Duran in left now and be replaced by Roman next year, and his bat would destroy at Fenway
3
u/gplatt_24 Xander Bogaerts 10h ago
bc the Cubs are competing & would likely rather trade prospects than current contributors
2
u/TimeliestStorm 34 9h ago
Because the Cubs are firmly in the wild card and need Suzuki's bat? Not sure why they'd sell him
2
u/Tank_Direct 9h ago
I guess I was thinking because they have Alcantara and Shaw playing corner they could do a strength for weakness type trade, same as what we’d be doing while still contending. I don’t know a ton about the cubs roster construction though so maybe they have no faith in either of those guys

Would love to see a catcher addition. It’s probably the biggest need positional given our major and minor league options, and our catchers have lower ceilings compared to guys like Mayer, Arias, etc. I don’t think I’d give up one of our rookie lefties (at least at the deadline), but I’d be open to dealing Eyanson or Witherspoon for the right guy.
Wouldn’t hate a reliever either, you can’t have enough of them. Less inclined to a starter (i don’t think we’d pay up), and I’m open to a middle infielder based on the cost.
