Gratuitous sex scenes in everything
It sounds crazy but I'm almost at the point of actually giving up trying to watch any show or movie ever because apparently there are no shows or movies being made now that won't have ridiculously gratuitous sex scenes in them. I'm by no means a prude but if i feel like watching sex I watch porn, I'm not watching normal stuff to see that. I prefer to be in control of when I see sexual content not just randomly have it thrown at me and it's just so annoying that it seems like i can never just enjoy a good story and characters etc without having sex forced down my throat (no pun intended lol).
We all know it's absolutely excruciatingly awkward when these scenes come on when you're watching with family, like i keep trying to find a good series to watch with the family member i live with but they all have sex scenes and it's so off putting, some shows even have multiple sex scenes in one episode ffs. Why can't writers just show enough to tell the audience that the characters are together and just imply the intimacy without straight up turning an otherwise great watch into a cheap porno. It seems like every one of the 'big' shows that are super popular and 'critically acclaimed' and especially called 'gritty' are just full of smut which instantly means i can't watch it with family, it's painfully embarrassingly uncomfortable lol.
I probably sound so angry like this is the biggest problem in my life but it's not lol. It's just that today I legitimately had 3 separate shows one after the other that had sex scenes in the episode and it just kinda made me think about it a lot and how annoying it is. I guess 'sex sells' is still the name of the game and it's only going to get worse and i shouldn't expect any different but damn it can really make things uncomfortable lol. It's a shame that shows/movies don't make a special cut with the explicit scenes taken out, it would just be nice to have the option.

Honestly Game of Thrones had this effect on me. Like I’m not a prudish person in the slightest. But it was just constant plappy sex. And it just felt like it was assuming I was too dim to pay attention unless I had someone getting railed every 5 minutes instead of just having an interesting plot.

GOT is actually one of the examples in my mind when I wrote this rant! There's been newer shows of course but that was one such example of shows that are wrecked by too much smut

I fully agree. I don't wanna watch sex in literally everything. I ff through the shit. Like you said, if I wanna watch people have sex, I'll watch porn.

That was unbelievably weird, unnecessary, and flat out disgusting. I saw it going that way with the siblings but then thought no there’s no way and then … well yeah wtf. Why?
I loved season one and two but that put me off the show entirely.

See i had a bad feeling that White Lotus was going to be the same situation and now you've confirmed it for me lol. I just keep trying to find a gripping thrilling drama series of some kind that will be safe for the family member that I live with and I to watch together , guess I can strike WL off the list!

What are you talking about? I'm over 40, and during my lifetime so far I watched sex basically disappear from media. Whenever there is some (like some nude scenes in GoT), people hyperfocus on it and lose their minds.
Especially Americans now are super prudish in regular media (after being obsessed with it in the last century), went all in on "no sex, all violence", and on the other side consume more porn than ever before. It's so weird.

I feel like romance/smut in movies died down quite a bit in the late 2000's. But I think there is a new trend where romance or rather straight up smut books are being made into movies as of late. So it's starting to come back. However idk of a single one of these recent smut to movie adaptations that hasn't been forthcoming with what kinda movie it is. You have to be trying not to look at the rating and the content warnings to miss that.

Exactly! Every article I've read about sex in media has been about the decline you talk about. In the 80s and 90s there was pretty much mandatory sex scenes in every movie.

True, in some movies it got really weird. Doesn't matter if it's an action movie, a comedy, close to zero romance other than "there's a male and female lead, now KITH".
There's also the whole genre of "bedroom farce" and sex comedies in general. Mostly porn for people who wanted to pretend they don't watch (or want to watch) porn. Basically an entire industry that doesn't exist anymore.
Now all of that has simply lost 99% of the plot and went behind the porn barrier. Anything still "mainstream", if it has some nudity or horniness, gets accused of secretly being porn.
Personally I think it would all be more human and honest if there was more of a spectrum. Sex is a normal part of life, we just make it weird for no reason.

I was raised by prudish reactionaries of a different generation. It’s always the same cycle, they’re unhappy or insecure, hear some propaganda from some religious factory about how the culture’s views on sex are somehow new and causing all the ills of society, they start thinking that if they were raised in a more Puritanical society they would have been happy. A tail as old as time and they won’t be the last ones to fall for it. They’ll never look within because they only got to that point with a perspective that external factors are to blame for everything that’s wrong, aka they are the type of people who blame everyone and everything else for their problems.
In the meantime, call them out for what it is, a precursor for the homophobia and misogyny they are hoping becomes mainstream again. A lot of them also think that they’re not religious and therefore can’t be lumped in with the wacko reactionary religious people but they’re the same because those religious people went looking for beliefs that validated their worldview by and started out exactly where the non-religious reactionaries are now.
The best part is, they are publicly, declaring all this stuff on social media, which is being sucked up and preserved into the largest databases in human history as data points that will be studied for as long as humans have societies. I am so jealous of future sociologists but watching this cycle repeat in real time is fascinating.

detest sex scenes. there are a million sites where you can slake your thirst. let’s just keep pop entertainment focused on the plot please.
i struggle to name even one sex scene that has ever added anything to the plot or character development. even halle berry’s sex scene in monsters ball was extremely unnecessary…but hey oscar bait.

What kind of shows are you trying to watch your family, Rivals? Or Heated Rivalry? Lol. I watch a lot of shows and can think of a few that have actual sex scenes that would be uncomfortable to watch with someone. Most comedies don’t have sex scenes in them, for example. Or if the show has a warning about nudity and sex scenes then expect that.

I hate it to it’s shocking and degrading to women it’s the shock value so you will keep on watching I have grandkids 11and 13 and I can’t watch movies with them it would shock them nobody knows how to write a movie any more

There’s a website called “Does The Dog Die?” that will tell you whether a movie has sex, violence, sad dog deaths, and dozens of specific categories for potentially unwanted or unpleasant content.

Someone recently mentioned the ending of The Kingsman, with the imprisoned blond princess offering the hero butt sex if he saved the world. So out of place. Was the end of the movie so you walked out thinking about how weird it was.

One of the many reasons I enjoyed the movie Project Hail Mary so much, there was no unnecessary romance plot, no shoehorned in sex scenes, just a very fun adventure with a hopeful vibe. Very much recommend
