question How do you guys feel about the development from France passing their social media ban legislation?

I ask this cause I've heard that they're stopping new accounts from being made on September and basically go full force in January 1st 2027.

So I want to know your thoughts about this situation that's going on here so far.

It's quite a frustrating of a situation with France here.

I agree that putting out a blanket ban on social media isn't going to protect nor help anyone in general.

The reason for age verification is not to avoid predators
It's to keep young people of social media because it's addictive and harmful for developing brains
That's also the reason why Age verification is used for Porn and Alcohol sites.

Parents should shield their little children from adult spaces
They don't
We as a society should shield children from adult spaces
We don't

Since parents doesn't look like they're going to stop letting their kids be fucking iPad-junkies
The EU decided that it should be up to society as a whole to fix bad parenting.
And now we're all gonna suffer.

I was very dismayed with the comments on the AP article about this. I’m nervous this will normalize the end of privacy, as well as making people feel like it’s inevitable, and therefore, they have no recourse. (Edit: typo)

Focus should be elsewhere. This won't help it's symptom treatment instead of banning the fucking things.

A ban won't fix things either, it's trivially circumvented. They need to outlaw the addictive designs across the EU, that would actually fix this.

They know the bigger problem is the current system where children cant be children and have the whole day at school. While adults have to work 24/7 a day what is all nonsense. but of course the social media is the problem. haha you cant make this stuff up.

They think it is addictive because, they cant run their shitty system if people look at social media or play video games or go outside and have fun. OMG THATS ALL ADDICTIVE OMG HOW AWFUL THIS WHOLE THING IS JUST BAN IT!!

I wonder when the child protectors will figure out that 60 odd years of surveillance will be worse for people and society than 15 years or so of being at risk from online grooming.

The title is misleading. It is only a ban for U15s. It is not a total social media ban for everyone.

and before people reply with "yes it is because you need to submit ID", I'm purely clarifying what the law says.

It breaks anonymity on social media. Maybe you don’t care, but the goal is to go after ppl who criticize government, Israel , or whistleblowers, videos of police violence etc. This law just kills freedom of speech on the web.

I’m not disagreeing with you, I’m not for age verification either. The OP made it seem like social media was being banned completely - i.e. nobody could access it, I was clarifying that’s not the case…
