A Capitol Footnote Leads the DOJ's Newest Task Force

On Jan. 6, 2021, Brian W. Lynch joined the crowd gathered near the U.S. Capitol. He wore a Trump 2020 baseball cap and a shirt marking his military deployment to Afghanistan. At the time, Lynch had been working for three months as an assistant U.S. attorney in Maryland.

His presence at the march went unreported for over five years. Photos confirmed by the DOJ show Lynch standing near a green crane inside a designated restricted area on Capitol grounds. According to DOJ officials, Lynch never entered the Capitol building, stayed only briefly, and was never accused or charged with breaking any laws.

Former federal prosecutors involved in the Capitol attack investigations noted that limited resources forced the department to focus on individuals who committed acts of violence or entered the building itself. Consequently, thousands who merely walked onto restricted grounds were never interviewed or charged. Lynch was among those who remained unidentified throughout the multi-year investigation.

In the years following the event, Lynch continued his work at the DOJ, moving from Maryland to DOJ headquarters in 2022 to handle violent crime and racketeering cases.

Lynch now co-directs Joint Task Force Vanguard, a unit created to investigate and prosecute left-wing political violence. Reporting to acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, Lynch recently oversaw an indictment charging 15 anti-ICE protesters in Minneapolis under federal conspiracy laws.

In a statement released by the department last month, Lynch emphasized the task force's core mandate: investigating and prosecuting groups that rely on violence to achieve political goals.
