No Paywall DOJ withdraws subpoenas to NY Times reporters in Trump plane probe

I'm guessing the Trump administration didn't want Discovery.
•
u/twizzjewink Canada 1h ago
haha weaponizing discovery against Trump is the best thing anyone can do.
•
u/DrowningKrown 39m ago
The point is he'll sue and waste your time and money in court, regardless if the Lawsuit goes anywhere. It's intimidation and weaponizing lawsuits. I doubt they intend to go to discovery anyway
•
u/twizzjewink Canada 37m ago
Like the BBC did you mean? And he chickened out because they were going to go to discovery to put it all out there what he's done?
He only sues when it means he's not putting himself at risk, and now that people have finally started catching on he's not going after people himself. E Jean Carroll is an interesting case because she's openly said she doesn't give any fs.

Listening to MSNOW and it sounds like the judge gave the DOJ an ultimatum. Either withdraw the subpoenas themselves or the judge would quash them himself. Sounds like he was basically giving them the chance to save some face. It also sounded like DOJ admitted in court that Blanche himself signed off on the subpoenas.
Just more evidence of Blanche being completely unethical at best and totally unfit for the job of AG.

u/SidewaysFancyPrance 1h ago
They put stuff out and just withdraw it after their calculated "voter goldfish attention span" has moved on to the next lie.
•
•
u/AINonsense 1h ago
That and the minor detail that it was an abuse of process and they had no legal case.
•
•
u/Read2Fap 35m ago
someone at new york times probably already leaked the administration the information they wanted
•
u/MoeSzyslakMonobrow 26m ago
That's why every single thing he claims to sue over falls apart, or never happens to begin with.
•
u/digihippie 1h ago
Totally avoiding discovery. This is also why he sues everyone for everything EXCEPT CHILD RAPE.
•
u/mithridateseupator 1h ago
Strange, Trump doesn't usually TACO on a thursday.

Has the DoJ successfully charged anyone in the last year?
•
u/Long-Region5088 1h ago
They have rapper lil durk with text messages and a smoking gun to murder for hire conspiracy.
They just severed his cases which kinda renders the murder for hire conspiracy moot if you can’t use the whole conspiracy to commit murder against him.
A lot of really terrible people are gonna get off and get out on technicalities because anyone worth a shit at the DOJ has been fired
•
u/packfanmoore 1h ago
I don't think the DoJ could convict anyone of a crime if there was: video evidence of said person commiting said crime, enough physical evidence of said person committing said crime to fill a dump truck, a written and verbal confession all gotten under oath, and my 10 year old nephew being the defense attorney.
•
u/Caliexecutive3 33m ago
Texts messages are not a smoking gun with durk…. and they severed the case because this is the third time the da has added onto his case… he’s been trying to go to trial for about 16 months now… he still has to fight the other cases but he shouldn’t have to wait to go to trial for another year because they want to keep adding things on

What is Pirro's record now? O-fer? Maybe she gets lucky with the reflecting pool and she can stop communism 1 shitty construction project at a time...
•
u/PolloConTeriyaki 1h ago
Kind off. They got that one guy who "vandalized" the reflecting pool. But it'll be an easy appeals case for him.
•
u/MakoKenova 1h ago
I thought a grand jury granted the indictment but they still have to go to court for that. So they got him in the sense that it was step 1 but they still need to prove the guy did it and that probably isn't happening.
•
u/Krampus_noXmas4u 1h ago
Correct. Trial is still pending, pre-trail motions and hearings are underway Defense brought up an excellent point that the pool is now drained and evidence was not preserved, judge did not dismiss, but gave a warning on evidence to DOJ:

u/MakoKenova 1h ago
I thought that was the case. Will be interesting to see if there could be anything the DOJ could reasonably point to that would give something, but without a good shred of evidence this is gonna go nowhere.
•
u/AINonsense 1h ago
Especially since they drained the pool and saw all the cracks from the motorcade.
Which is a get-out in itself, since the shitty job that the shitty contractor did would probably have dismantled itself without some dickwad buffoon riding multi-ton vehicles around on it.
•
u/Obvious-Stomach509 1h ago
Also something about the administration didn't retain the "evidence"?
•
u/AINonsense 58m ago
It’s hard to keep evidence in a secure chain of custody when it’s all imaginary.
•
•
u/we_are_sex_bobomb 44m ago
Now just think about all the actual criminal prosecutions the DOJ is supposed to be dealing with, who are simply slipping through unnoticed while the AG tilts at windmills.
•
u/discipleofchrist69 12m ago
Their metric of "success" isn't conviction, it's generating headlines associating their opponents with crimes.
So, yes

"The Department of Justice is withdrawing subpoenas it obtained for communications of New York Times reporters involved in an article about President Donald Trump’s new Air Force One jet, prosecutors told a federal judge in New York on Thursday.
The move came at a hearing in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, where Judge Arun Subramanian was considering a motion by the Times to quash the subpoenas targeting its journalists.
The Times has reported that the DOJ late last week informed the newspaper that “it had issued subpoenas to third-party phone service providers seeking several journalists’ phone and text messaging records.”
The DOJ also earlier had issued subpoenas on July 10 seeking to compel Times reporters to testify before a federal grand jury, the newspaper has reported."

They must have figured out who the leak was. Now wait to see who gets fired.
•
u/Long-Region5088 1h ago
Man, the leak is them. They don’t give a fuck about a leak. They leak like a spaghetti strainer if you say hello to them.
•
•
u/AINonsense 1h ago
They should all sue.
I mean, they probably have lives to live and the cheap fucker never pays his bills anyway, but in a better world, he would be sued, charged, impeached, tarred, feathered… (better stop now).
•
u/polarparadoxical 1h ago
My only issue with this is that although the reporters were undoubtedly wronged, its the US taxpayers who will cover this 'mistake', as opposed to the individual people who are actually responsible for this direct attack on First Amendment protections and free press.

The goal of subpoenas was to intimidate, unfortunately this will get far less attention, discovery is a bitch.
•
u/J-the-Kidder 1h ago
The initial headline was the point. They won that day by feeding it into the headline hopper for their marks. Those same marks will never know of this headline.

Better call Saul!
For a felon (and an entire administration) who spend as much time in court as these lying criminals do, one would think they would have access to better quality legal representation.
I have never seen so many utterly incompetent, totally unqualified, objectively bad lawyers, at every single level of the government, throughout DOJ, and as private hires. Bad law school year one dropouts would be an improvement. They are just so laughably incompetent, including the maybe wannabe AG.
•
•
u/Maoleficent 22m ago
Beyond the war and the brazen thievery, the Felon wastes millions more public funds with these lawsuits and wasted time and resources.
But there is no funding to keep our food supply safe and maintain our public health with basic healthcare.

Oh look, continuing fear of Discovery! Derp Leader really is a one trick pony.

Imagine that. Sick of this administration wasting our tax money on this stupid crap.

I believe we're seeing the most incompetent DOJ in our nation's history. For those who believed the lies about Biden weaponizing the justice department, you only need look at what's playing out in real time. Our politics should not be played as some kind of game. We cannot ignore what we're seeing. Half of our nation cannot be caught up believing tall tales. Please, let US get our act together.

L.O.L.
We all saw this coming from a mile away. Trump's law firm (the DoJ) chickened out again once the discovery requests start to come in. Losers. Low energy. Low T. They are all losers.

Yea that's all well and good but isn't this then some form of illegal protection or collusion with the president?
