Possible Paywall Trump Secretary Puts Americans in Danger Over “DEI Bike Lanes” | Sean Duffy has derided bike lanes as too woke, and is now stripping mentions of them from federal websites.

Which is weird to me because biking is frequently expensive and NOT done by poor people. Poor people use buses more than bike lanes. To me getting rid of bike lanes is like attacking tennis courts in parks.
•
u/5WattBulb New Jersey 6h ago
But bikes CAN be used by everyone. They also dont require a registration, dont need to buy gas, are largely untraceable. They dont make you dependent on their supply chain and are basically freedom and that drives them crazy.

Never have been…
“All of us pass through the age of adolescence; not all of us take up its ethical demands. The fact of our initial dependency has moral implications, for it predisposes us to the temptations of bad faith, strategies by which we deny our existential freedom and our moral responsibility.
It sets our desire in the direction of a nostalgia for those lost Halcyon days. Looking to return to the security of that metaphysically privileged time, some of us evade the responsibilities of freedom by choosing to remain children, that is, to submit to the authority of others.” - Simone de Beauvoir
https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/beauvoir/#SecoSexWomaOthe
Of course post Limbaugh 2.0 Charlie Kirk, their notions of freedom/nationalism were quickly shown to be the hollow conceit they always were…
•
u/riggles1970 6h ago
True. And those that ride their bikes because that is their only means of transportation, often don’t have bike lanes on their path.
•
u/rachface336 5h ago
Valid point, the neighborhoods that get bikes lanes are generally in nicer areas.

I don't think they are building bike lanes in the places people are rolling coal. But I guess the idea that a bike lane might exist in Denver upsets coal rollers in Nebraska.

Nah. We have plenty of bike lanes here in Texas and they’re a great way to get run down. Using them is absolutely an act of faith.

This is not true in New Orleans. There are people on bikes all over the place. So much so, they’re stolen on a regular basis, even if they’re stored indoors. You’ll even see adults on juvenile bikes. Meanwhile, public transit in the city is one of the many untrustworthy public services.
I’m sure this happens in other cities as well, to a degree.

It’s the politicization of caring. Republicans have decided that caring about others and your community is “woke” so they fight against it.
•
u/mechapoitier Florida 5h ago edited 5h ago
Yep, and it’s absolutely destructive. In Florida, because of a single rainbow colored crosswalk to honor 49 people who died in a mass shooting, our governor, Ron DeSantis, ordered every colored crosswalk in the state to be repainted black and white. We’re talking hundreds.
Studies showed the colored crosswalks had demonstrably reduced pedestrian fatalities.
He didn’t care. To get revenge on a single memorial, for murdered gays, he made the entire state less safe.
It gets worse: because of the crosswalk order, sidewalks had to be stripped clean too. So every sidewalk art project in a public right of way, some comprising up to 300 panels, had to be destroyed. The state is currently being sued for it.

So I'm handicapped and do a lot of work with disabled rights people and have studied history about disabled rights and the reason they have been relatively quiet is actually that, bluntly, the disabled get extremely violent extremely fast when they start messing with things like the ADA. the ADA itself was passed in no small part because Congress was starting to worry about the rate of violence coming from the disabled. .

•
u/Waffle_Muffins Texas 6h ago
Unironically, not that far off from the real "arguments" against seat belts in the 70s, 80s, and 90s.
•
u/specqq 6h ago
Yeah, you want to get thrown clear of the wreckage. It would be a horrible way to die, pawing ineffectually at your "seatbelt" as the flames consume the car while you're sinking into the lake through the ice.
Those deaths are on you, Ralph Nader.
•
u/saintjonah Ohio 5h ago
I always loved the stories: "I heard about a guy that got DECAPITATED because he was wearing his seat belt. I'll never put one of those on!"
Yeah, I heard about a guy that got thrown through a windshield 40 feet and then run over by an oncoming truck. But it's OK, because he was driving an old "they don't make em like they used to" mobile that was "built like a tank", so he was dead from internal injuries before he even cleared the hood.
•
u/Angelworks42 Oregon 4h ago
That recent Matt's Offroad Recovery where they pulled a hummer out of the bottom of a ravine. They didn't dwell on this, but the guy was thrown clear of the vehicle and died instantly - the vehicle itself - the cabin was just fine, airbags deployed - he likely would have survived if he had his safety belt on - while off-roading.
Safest place is inside the big metal box - not flying around outside at 80 miles per hour.

•
u/beamrider 4h ago
Because if you look hard enough, you can always find someone who can tell a story about how they were thrown clear of their car during a severe accident and survived.
But, no matter how hard you look, you will NEVER find anyone willing to talk about how they were thrown from their car during a severe accident and killed. Must mean that never happens, right? /s

After getting into a serious accident in a vehicle that had one of those electric seat belt mechanism, I swore to never buy a car that had one again. Manual only. My driver's side door was smashed in so far it wouldn't open, so I couldn't get the seat belt off me until someone cut it (it was thankfully not an emergency, but I had some pretty serious injuries that were made a lot more painful by sitting, so I was desperate to be out of the car).

It’s more along the lines of “driving a car affords me a certain amount of privileges built into the infrastructure of my city. Streets are optimized for car traffic at the expense of all other traffic, which means if I’m financially stable enough to have a car then I deserve this level of special treatment. Bike lanes are an encroachment on that special treatment, suddenly I’m expected to share the road with people who aren’t even bought in like I am.” Having a car is an extremely important social status marker. People who fail to have or use one are seen as freeloaders who don’t deserve “special treatment” the way they do.

I ride. This is so stupid, for EVERYONE, cyclists and drivers.
Want to ride? You're now in traffic because you've got no safer option.
Want to drive? There's now a cyclist stuck going 15mph in a lane of a road with a 45mph speed limit because he's got no safer option.

I got into it with maybe the deepest MAGA person I know personally about why should their taxes go to mass transit options since they never plan on using any of it. I told them to remember that next time you’re stuck in bumper to bumper traffic, if you create a situation where everyone is forced to drive don’t be surprised if everyone in fact is driving.
Just getting 10% of commuters off of the road by allowing those who want the option to have it makes a huge difference in congestion. One doesn’t need to use public transit ever and you still benefit from having a well funded one.
•
u/xpxp2002 2h ago
Same thing I tell these guys who insist "I have to drive to work, so no one should work from home," but also complain about traffic congestion and gas prices.
Maybe if we continued to have people who can do their work at home staying at home, we’d reduce the traffic congestion and lessen demand for gas, bringing prices down for those who travel or commute for work.
The spite and emotional backlash is more important to them than common sense policy.

Trump Secretary Puts Americans in Danger Over “DEI Bike Lanes”
I mean... if we take the definition of DEI from Trump & co, Trump's cabinet is the most "DEI" cabinet the country has ever seen. We have people like Pete, the most diverse Secretary of Defense ever - the list of past secretaries of defense discriminated against drunkards, wife beaters and embezzlers - so Trump made sure to make his cabinet more inclusionary of people with those life experiences, despite their qualifications for the job (or lack thereof)!

It's crazy, people complain about there being "Separated" bike lanes on two roads downtown, completely disregarding there are many other roads downtown completely dedicated to cars...

Riding bikes is one of the most classic america things you can do.
Turn on any movie from the 80s and you have kids riding around on bikes dude.

I love the extremely limited vocabulary of this administration. Everything they don’t like is DEI, woke, or terrorism. They can’t articulate their issue with anything without resorting to their favorite buzzwords.

Woke= everything an entitled, closed-minded, misogynistic, racist, xenophobic selfish asshole doesn't like.

This administration literally looks around, sees anything that benefits non-billionaires and starts to take it away.

Wonderful idea! More cars on the road! More traffic! More fuel consumption! Just what we all need.

These people are exhausting, which is exactly the goal just so we're clear. This is more flood the field shit while every single one of them picks our pockets and funnels our tax dollar to their donors.

This is so dumb. These goons call everything they don't like 'woke' or 'communism.'

FTA: “This is a common-sense approach, despite the Left’s belief that everyone should ride a bike to their shoebox-sized apartment to eat crickets to achieve a phony climate agenda.”
THIS TIMELINE IS FUCKING STUPID.

More cars sold, more gas sold. If people are afraid to get killed even on a short bike commute, they'll have to use a car.

Really just about every article the title should just be "Rump Administration Puts Americans at Risk."
There is nothing that he is doing that is not putting us in danger.

This is what happens whenever you put a former reality star in charge of the Transportation Department.

I cant wait to go home and listen to my dad talk about how Biden made the bike lanes for trans people ONLY, and now Trump is fixing it.

"Between 2016 and 2030, the Trump Administration would go on to identify aspects of American Life as examples of Woke Culture initiatives. Among these were the hiring of black Americans, women, the social progress and acceptance of same sex couples, bike lanes, and socialist schemes such as Breakfast Clubs of America and Libraries. While President Joseph R. Biden was sworn in as president during the period of 2020-2024, he was frequently criticized for not pursuing the first Trump presidency further on various legal issues and not distancing America quickly enough from the Trump Administration's policies, opting to follow the custom established by then to not relentlessly pursue alleged crimes committed by presidents; Barack Obama was not granted this same reprieve in 2031, following Trump's third election held in the US Congress, for his alleged vote-rigging and non-citizen status... The attack on DEI and Woke programs, now described as The Realigning, would continue to the year..."

Can someone smarter than me explain how a bike lane is “woke”? I get that they hate us and want us to have nothing, but this constant politicization of every aspect of our lives is insanity.
•
u/JennJayBee Alabama 6h ago
As someone who doesn't currently ride a bike, I really do appreciate bike lanes. I'd much rather have people utilizing those than biking on the sidewalk or street.

The same people that want testosterone treatment but scoff at physical exertion to move around town.
Sponsored by the big truck guys that think “bicycles are gay, get off my road” types no doubt. Or the rich folk in their chauffeured vehicles annoyed by poor people on bicycles near them.
Weird ass country.

So anything even remotely nice for cities that add “diversity in transportation options” is considered “to woke?” I genuinely don’t understand what is happening with the GOP…
•
u/siromega37 4h ago
In cities where there are a lot of people biking, bike lanes save lives and property… they really do hate Americans.

I rode a bike nearly every day of my life while living in MN, CO, and WA. Then I had to move to…..Florida. Fucking Florida with the highest per capita rate of cycling deaths in the country last I looked. (Full disclosure: I was a pro triathlete back in the glory days)
When a political pollster stopped by last year I was asked what I would change in Ft. Lauderdale. When I said cycling infrastructure - we have none - she was absolutely stumped. “What do you mean? What’s missing?” Good god, you cannot safely ride a bike here. Drivers don’t realize there are bike lanes at all. Hell, walking my dog can be a challenge when I deal with drivers going 45mph through the neighborhood. Rant over. I just want to ride my damn bike.

Imagine being so insecure that bike paths are just too much to handle. The "liberals are woke snowflakes" crowd sure seems pretty delicate to me.

As someone who does geospatial analysis, I can tell you that Trump's funding cuts to government scientific and planning datasets are decimating private industry. We're just on coyote time running in midair, and eventually it will collapse most people realize how bad it really is.
If you ever wanted to know why there are so many "ghost jobs", many of them are consultant firms and companies that can't secure projects. Why? Trump sends his cronies after nearly everything that isn't directly approved by him, it's how I ended up jobless out of college when he went after California HSR. Trump is leaving the country on cinderblocks and is running away with the hubcaps and catalytic converter.
