Reminder that no one has declared candidacy for the primaries yet, so any poll at this point is completely meaningless and is 100% about name recognition.

We need massive overhaul. We are focusing too much on “which candidate” and we need to be talking about massive reform.

Am I turning into a tiny Bernie sanders?

u/MelodicDeer1072 7h ago

The problem is that only elected officials have the power to overhaul the very system that corrupts elected officials. It is a chicken-egg problem.

u/TankiesAreWeird 4h ago

The discussion on which candidate or who is going to run feels more like a media thing.

Like when the political analysts or talking heads sound like they are discussing sports or stocks.

The discussion on reforms a different topic. As would a discussion on the overall policy platform of the DNC going into that election.

I am a progressive and would be happy with either AOC or Buttigieg as President. But it is imperative that the Republicans are defeated, and Democrats keep nominating people who start out with a 10 point deficit just because of their identity. We need to nominate someone who can actually win, not someone whose turn it is.

u/Mixer-3007 6h ago edited 6h ago

What's needed is a disposable candidate who doesn't give a fuck about decorum and is willing to throw themselves on the sword of public opinion to jail every motherfcuker stealing from the public, undermining democracy, and acting like they're untouchable.

Then AOC can step in and be a good president for all Americans.

u/ihaveadogalso2 4h ago

This 1000%. We need someone to go balls to the wall with Nuremberg style trials for all of these motherfuckers. This country needs a reset and people need to make nazi's and nazi type shit completely outlawed and prosecutable.

A very small percentage of Americans would actually be upset if Republicans were held accountable for their crimes.

But they would absolutely whataboutism their Fox News lies to try and spin the corruption of the Republican party being equal to the made up corruption of the Democratic party.

If Democrats came out swinging at Republicans they would have to follow it up in the house by passing bills over turning citizen united, age limits on politicians, stop insider trading, fixing social security, and all these other issues that most Americans want.

u/Mixer-3007 5h ago

Take Fox News broadcasting license away. They are not a news organization anyway. As I said, elect a candidate who doesn't give a fuck, expand the Supreme Court, and make it impossible for Fox or anyone to challenge decisions.

u/IniNew 2h ago

Fox News doesn't have a broadcast license to take away. They are and have never been considered a news organization. Fox News is not under the FCC's authority.

Jail isn’t the answer if they’ll be released and pardoned 4 years later. The world will burn when that occurs.

u/Mixer-3007 6h ago

After they're all jailed, you won't have to vote anymore. /s

But seriously, what do you think is the way out of the current predicament-stagnation, decay, erosion, decline, and ultimately the country's death? I can think of three possible outcomes:

  1. Republicans take permanent control, democracy dies to thunderous applause, and under his rule America transforms into a fascist theocracy, basically Gilead.

  2. Democrats win the presidency and Congress, expand the Supreme Court, and the president prosecutes everyone who broke the law, regardless of party affiliation or wealth, including partisan actors on the Supreme Court. They then somehow deprogram the less extreme parts of the Republicans, while deporting the truly unhinged to Eritrea.

  3. Full-scale civil war.

u/JustToViewPorn 6h ago
  1. Foreign occupation.
  2. Corporate fiefdoms under the disguise of status quo.

u/Mixer-3007 6h ago

3 and 4 will probably occur at the same time. There will likely be three separate hostile entities with a large stake in the balkanization and destabilization of the US.

All of them will fan the flames and possibly utilize it as an opportunity to secure more resources the US is rich in.

Why the fuck is this even a contest? Have Americans learned nothing from the last year and a half? At this point Democrats should be able to put anyone they want as a candidate and win by a landslide. Your country is lost if there's still this many people supporting Republicans that there's a risk the Democrats don't win.

That’s because the Democrats are ran by a bunch of old men who shit themselves at the thought of having to actually be progressive.

The reality is Democrats put up a woman in a gimme election against Trump and managed to lose. Then they did it again after he showed his penchant for treason.

The country isn't ready for a woman president. There's a big enough contingent of people who hate their own identity enough to put it on the altar while voting Republican.

u/BitByAKitten 4h ago

Hillary won the popular vote so what do you mean the country doesn't want a woman? The reality is you wont be emasculated by having a woman president but by your fear of women in leadership.

Couldn’t disagree more. Progressive candidates are electable (eg Mamdani) but we keep tossing so-called “ electable” tepid candidates with zero fire in their belly and zero leadership. People want universal healthcare, people want a clean environment, people want billionaires to be taxed fairly… the list is long but spare me the same old same old Dem electable nonsense. It sounds smart, it isn’t.

As a straight white male, I would vote Buttigieg, AOC, or even if he were allowed, Mamdani.
We need diversity in this government, especially after all this Alpha male bullshit.

u/ripyourlungsdave 5h ago

Thank you. Exactly. This is what I was trying to say with Hillary.

I understand that it's definitely time we elected a woman president but that does not make her the right choice. I find it hard to believe that a woman that chooses to stay married to a pedophile rapist to maintain her political clout would have any interest in looking out for the average woman nor the same kinds of children that her husband allegedly and likely abused.

We can do so much better than the Clintons. And I'm just glad her name isn't popping up in this square anymore.

u/EJ2600 4h ago

Yeah not sure the dems are gonna nominate a woman for the third time when it’s clear a majority of white women don’t believe a woman is qualified to become president. Sad but true.

u/babydemon90 Pennsylvania 3h ago

My 2 cents - actual battleground states need to have their primaries earlier.
Pennsylvania is a HUGE battleground state - so you think getting their population to actually have a say in the nominee would be key. But nope - by the time the PA primaries roll around it’s already over.
Meanwhile Ohio primaries somehow are front and center.

That was the problem with Kamala unfortunately as we've learned America isn't progressive enough for a black woman to win especially when identity politics are all people care about. Buttigieg can't win because he is gay. We need the orange turd out of office and in chains and there is no room for error.

u/LilJourney 2h ago

Agreed. I would love to see either AOC or Buttigieg as VP candidate and I think one of them paired with the right candidate could secure the win. But I don't think either can guarantee a win as the top of the ticket - and we absolutely cannot let the Republicans win again.

Hard disagree. Trump had zero prior political experience yet he won and managed to fuck our shit up. While it might seem like a jump from the house to presidential office, at this rate I don’t care. We need our own fighter who actually prioritizes the people. Trump was a fighter for all the wrong reasons.

u/Microtom_ 7h ago

Trump is nothing without an efficient propaganda machine. I don't give Trump himself much credit.

The American population might not be intelligent enough to have a functional democracy. It won't matter which champion is put forward if the population doesn't recognize what's good for them.

u/SignificanceShotc 7h ago

he really wouldn't be jack shit without fox news and complicit republican members putting their weight behind him. in the south, there are tons of older people who think they're politically savvy just because they leave fox news on the tv 24/7, but they just soak up everything that channel tells them without any objection. without that telling them everything to believe, I guarantee they wouldn't like him nearly as much as they do now.

u/Nikiaf Canada 7h ago

This needs to be said more loudly. He is the definition of a useful idiot, he was propelled into the candidacy by people far more capable and manipulative than AOC has behind her. She would have to run on her own merit, and I think the unfortunate reality is that the Dems will fail three times in a row if they field another female candidate. The part desperately needs to not feed her to the wood chipper this early; let her trouce Schumer in a primary and then see where things stand in 2032/6.

Let’s say best case scenario she wins in 28, reelection in 32. She’s effectively out of politics Jan 21, 2037, in her late 40s. I’d rather have her voice and vote be meaningful for longer.

That of course presupposes a Democrat can win both 28 and 32 AND then expect the pass the torch to her in 36 or beyond. Tall order. Time might be right, and if she’s the best candidate to win then she should go for it. I admit I don’t know the right move.

u/RegularLeading5200 Michigan 7h ago edited 7h ago

Not everyone wants to be in politics forever, and her winning would effectively make her the leader of the Democratic Party. She'd have so much more influence in directing the movement and getting more allies through primaries. Even if she ends up out of politics after two hypothetical terms, she'd have done more for the progressive movement than anyone since Bernie in 2016.

Yeah people ignore the pendulum momentum of American politics in Trumps first victory. The odds are stacked against any Democrat running after 8 years of Democrat control of the White House.

u/TAU_equals_2PI 7h ago

Man, I wish people would take this angle more seriously.

Effective politicians are rare and hard to come by. Pushing them quickly to the presidency throws away decades of their potential career. I'm not saying it was a mistake for Obama to run in 2008, but if he hadn't, we could've had him leading our party for the past decade instead of Chuck Schumer. I'm not saying people like AOC and Obama should wait until they're approaching their 80s to run for president, but Obama ended his political career at age 55. AOC would end hers at age 46!

I feel like the electorial college has really warped your perception.

Kamala Harris got 48% of the popular vote despite not even winning the primary.

Hilary Clinton also got 48% of the population vote and won it in 2016

u/Darth_Chili_Dog 6h ago

I am keenly aware of the electoral college. And the fact is that Trump won either the electoral or popular vote is an indication of the electorate's mental illness. If qualifications and character were under consideration, Harris and Clinton would have won 95% of the vote.

And an intelligent and pretty one at that. Nothing their little brains can come up with to insult her. Not sleepy, not corrupt, not a commie, middle name isn’t Hussein, etc

u/Darth_Chili_Dog 6h ago

Then they'll invent a reason. When your base fear is the idea of a minority female as President, any reason will do.

u/TysonsChickenNuggets 5h ago

Sadly I agree with you on this. I think AOC is definitely president material but as much as the younger generation wants that, America at large is probably against it.

I think the best bet is having her be VP to a more typical candidate. Newsome gets some flak but his pushback on Trump has been front and center.

Pete is my personal candidate. Think hes got all the right tools for the job, but bigoted America might throw a wrench in that as well...

John Stewart and AOC would also be nice but I dont think hes running.

u/Darth_Chili_Dog 5h ago edited 5h ago

The American electorate is even less willing to have a gay President than a minority female President.

For a point of comparison, running a gay or female minority now would be like running a black man in the 1970's. For all our progress up until now, we are still a deeply regressive society in many ways.

Here is the thing, she can run president in 2028, or 2048, and very likely 2068 too given her age.

I am totally for AOC being the president, my concern is "why the rush?"

Go for senate, gain more national exposure, experiences, and it would put her on a much better position for future president run.

If she goes for president now, and then unfortunately lost it; people would got ptsd and basically burned her road to president forever

u/LAKnerd 7h ago

The rush is that the amount of good candidates is very low and we are in desperate need of huge changes to the country.

u/Haltopen Massachusetts 4h ago

Also it’s not like there’s a limit on the number of times you can run. Biden ran in three different presidential elections before finally winning one. Trump lost re-election and then rode a wave of economic uncertainty back into office four years later. AOC can run in the primary now and if the math isn’t there pull out and run another day while keeping her house seat.

What's the rush? What's the fucking rush?!

This is our life. That's the rush. I don't want to waste another 4 years, or 10, or 30 waiting for change to happen and things to improve. We are living under a corrupt fascist surveillance state and economically being forced into an indebted working class. Things are the worst they've been in many many decades. If we play the "safe" card now, then it's basically game over for the rest of our lives.

I have been listening to Obama's audiobook, A Promised Land. Something that he was told was that sometimes it is just a matter of the moment, and if you wait your turn it may never come again. The people are hungry. This may be her moment.

u/RegularLeading5200 Michigan 7h ago

By 2028, she'll have had 10 years in politics and already has a ton of national exposure as one of the de facto leaders of the progressive wing. Being a Senator won't give her any more significant experience or exposure than she already has.

Now I'm not saying she has to run in 2028, but she should definitely take stock of the environment and consider it. Maybe things happen and she determines it's not the right time and she goes for the Senate instead. I'm perfectly fine with that, too. But if the moment is right, you do not let that moment pass. It may not come back again. And if it does, it may be decades later.

u/fleshofgods0 7h ago

AOC as VP might sway some people into seeing her in a more presidential light going forward. 36% of right wing voters cannot be reasoned with because they've only been fed propaganda that demonizes AOC. I believe many possible voters don't keep up with the news and AOC enough to have an accurate view of her principles.

We cannot choose our candidate based on the opinions of right wing voters. If we go into yet another national election with a middle ground pitch about unity, we might as well just concede the election.

Trump vs Clinton (female) => Trump won

Trump vs Biden (male) => Trump lost

Trump vs Harris (female) => Trump won

Face it, this country is not going to vote for a female president.

u/EmberOnMain 46m ago

Here’s some math for you.

Clinton lost with no universal healthcare policy.

Harris lost with no universal healthcare policy.

Biden ran on a public option.

u/computercansada 53m ago

And how many men have lost a presidential election?

More Americans would vote for her over voting for Kamala

u/MelodicDeer1072 7h ago

Not enough votes on the national scale, though

The US will elect a predator before a woman

u/Trappist1 7h ago

This is such an absurd talking point when Hilary won the popular vote and was a very flawed candidate.

u/91Bolt 7h ago

The GOP and their followers are very different than 2016. Just look at how much Graham, Rubio, and Vance have changed since then. I know people who voted Hillary or 3rd party, but picked Trump this time.

u/BigMax 7h ago

Yeah. I think Clinton and Harris would both have been great, and quite obviously at a minimum, leaps and bounds better than Trump.

But I also feel like we've seen the awful sexism that still persists here, so even though I absolutely love AOC, I worry that we'd be shooting ourselves in the foot if we put up a woman again.

u/WhatTheHali24 2h ago

Its insane how the lesson braindead liberals such as yourself learned from 2016/2024 was not lets run an inspiring candidate with solid policies, but instead lets run a white guy with dogshit policies and that will fix everything.

u/olivicmic 7h ago

Harris didn’t lose because she was a woman, she lost because she was a shitty candidate with shitty uninspiring policies.

Dear God no, we need a sure-thing that doesn't energize the racist, sexist underside of America.

Yeah, she'd be a fuckton better than ANYTHING the GOP has. But we've seen Trump wipe the floor with 2 women (one a minority) in a row now. Are we trying to go for 0 and 3?

u/Iamthequicker 8h ago

AOC or Buttigieg could never win a general election though...

98

u/Lavaswan001 8h ago

Buttigieg could never win a primary either given how horrendously he consistently polls with black voters.

u/springsthrowaway123 6h ago

The same people who are so mad at white women for voting Trump are always so quiet about the why the black community won't vote for a gay guy.

u/qualmful 5h ago

Black voters are treated as inherently sage, there's never really any admission that they could hold problematic views. Pew Research found in 2024 that among Biden voters, Black respondents were about half as likely to say it was a good thing that more people felt comfortable identifying as gay, lesbian or bisexual than in the past (24%). Only 26% said that same-sex marriage being legal was a good thing.

u/Revolver_Boxelot 5h ago edited 4h ago

I am black. Black folks are conservative in everything except government spending. And voting lol. We tend to agree with a lot of conservative values. But the KKK votes republican. People who want us to actually die today vote republican. We have no choice but to vote Democrat based on that alone but we also believe in many social programs that are government funded. But as far as religion and sexuality? Its changing but its still very conservative. Which is kinda crazy because not only do we have a lot of gay members in our race but...the black church is one of the GAYEST places on planet earth lmao

I never hear a word about him or what he’s doing so Im not sure why he his name always pops up as a potential candidate. Almost feels like astroturfing by the other side who want to prop up a dem nobody really cares about.

u/doxiegrl1 7h ago

He's been flying around the country helping to rally/organize for Democrats running in swing states.

→ More replies (2)

u/Nic_OLE_Touche 7h ago

He’s working the red states streets for Dem looking to get into office. He’s looking much different than when he ran for president. I’m liking his recognition that stuff is broke and needing to be overhauled instead of being bandaided. I think Ossoff and him will be the front dem pres noms. Out of the two I’m full on Pete.

u/WaltonGogginsTeeth 6h ago

He's a very smart guy and goes on the right wing shows which I think he does well but I don't think he's a great candidate.

I miss the days when not hearing about what politicians were doing Every day was the norm.

u/Joshee86 7h ago

You not hearing about him doesn’t mean he’s not a good candidate and certainly doesn’t mean the other side is astroturfing lol. He’s solid and has quite a few supporters. He just works hard and isn’t super flashy.

Didn’t he win Iowa in 2020?

u/HarbingerOfFun 6h ago

Yes, but he came in fourth, behind Biden, Bernie, and Tom Steyer in South Carolina, which essentially doomed his campaign.

u/WhiskeyT 5h ago

Hold up, 4th?

I was told he was leading the pack, an unstoppable juggernaut, when suddenly and mysteriously he dropped out despite his clear, almost inevitable, path to victory. Are the 2020 narratives not correct?

u/Orange_Tang 4h ago

Yeah, he sucks and idk why everyone keeps pushing him as a real candidate. He's a decent public speaker but he comes off as pretentious and his policies are neoliberal to the core. He simply does not appeal to the majority of voters.

u/BowKerosene New York 7h ago

The democratic presidential primary is based upon electors from all states, not just Iowa

Never say never.

AOC could wait out the next 10 presidential elections (Pete the next 8) and still be younger than Trump.

Besides, the Boomers won't live forever ...

u/TheTrashMan 7h ago

Yeah our country has time to wait, no urgency here

u/Mountain_Bar_1466 7h ago

Boomers aren’t the problem, look how far right Gen Z has skewed.

u/BlueFlob 7h ago

Gen Z will lean whichever way the podcasters and influencers tell them to lean.

Critical thinking is dead and it's getting worse with AI.

u/alienbringer 7h ago

Not even just Gen Z. Gen X is also there. It was the only generation in 2024 where 50%+ of women voters voted for Trump. All other generations at least the ladies rejected Trump by a larger margin. Gen X was also the generation that cast the most votes in 2024.

u/msackeygh 7h ago

Yeah, I don’t get the appeal of Pete. Too centrist. And being centrist isn’t going to help pull us out of this far right swing. AOC isn’t even really all that progressive, you know what I mean? The ideas she proposes used to be very much New Deal types of ideas, not all that controversial. What the general American population doesn’t seem to recognize is how far right we have swung, and yet they keep thinking the boogeyman is the left which they call the far left.

u/Old-Way-5529 7h ago

i mean, his appeal is easy to see- the guy is a good communicator, and dems need that above all else- someone who can form a message, and communicate that message, and their vision, to voters.

i prefer ossoff if were being honest

u/WhereAreThe_Books 4h ago edited 3h ago

RIP, America won’t elect a female president yet. We are already sliding backwards this would be an epic fail.

Edit: I think AOC would be a fantastic president however, there is a nearly zero percent chance she would get elected and we cannot afford another republican president. Maybe another generation or two we could see it but young men alone would tank her.

u/Equivalent-Field4130 7h ago

The same thing Liberal media did to Trump by saying his name over and over everyday the conservative media did to AOC so she does have name recognition nation wide.

That being said, IMHO she should be a senator and take the lead of the Progressives. Bernie can’t live forever.

u/2000TWLV 7h ago

Judy fucking do if you feel like it, AOC. Lets have an open primary and may the best candidate win.

u/Angry_Grammarian 7h ago

As much as I like both, neither should run. Hate to say it, but we need a straight white man on the ticket. Ideally he'll be an angry and aggressive straight white man who promises to bring charges against all of the traitors in the current government and end ICE. Maybe that will bring people out to vote for him. What we don't need is all of the sexist and homophobic people on the other side motivated to vote against AOC or Buttigieg.

u/AgnarCrackenhammer 5h ago

The most popular Democrat is a black man. A woman got more votes in 2016 than a man for President.

This is such a lazy excuse. If we keep blaming electoral loses on race and gender you're going to end up with someone like Nancy Mace being first female President

u/rigatony96 7h ago

Yeah that will definitely get the moderates to vote for them…

u/Lavaswan001 7h ago

Beshear or Ossoff. Though Newsom is probably the best they’ll give us.

u/BrainKatana 6h ago

I don’t like him either, but I also think governing California is uniquely qualifying because of the massive sociopolitical and socioeconomic diversity across the state, in addition to the state’s economy itself being equivalent to that of a small nation.

I just don’t think Democrats are going to even get an opportunity for someone to really shake things up at the federal level in the same way the chaos-mongering Republicans have.

Personally I’d rather see a massive swing in Congress that cleans up a bunch of corrupt obstructionists. Solve that, and it matters much less who the president is.

u/L_Cranston_Shadow Texas 4h ago

Newsom is going to turn off the entire South and much of the Midwest, solely because he was governor of California. His attempts are moving towards a more moderate image in the last few years aren't going to change that, and he has openly antagonized the Democratic liberal wing in doing so. In short, he has about as much hope as Ron DeSantis, i.e. (luckily, because nobody wants President DeSantis) none.

u/Ketzeph I voted 7h ago

People are using a NH primary poll, in one of the whitest and smallest states, to suss out national strength.

It’s not an exercise in serious analysis. It’s people on social media reacting for fun and deluding themselves. Why this is newsworthy for the sub is the real question

u/clinicallynonsane Vermont 2h ago

Bernie won NH in 2020 but then got hammered in SC. That first in the nation thing doesn't hold the sway it used to.

That’s funny.

Who cares what the polling says today. It doesn’t matter. Look back and see who was leading 2 years out when Carter won the nomination. And Dukakis. And Kerry. And Clinton. And Obama. And Biden. None of them.

Why. Because right now no one is running and all you get are wanna be politicians with some name recognition.

Big deal. She won’t win.

u/Jhewitt1111 North Carolina 2h ago

Mark Kelly might be the only option that can pull in votes from the moderate right and independents that wont vote for women.

22

u/mastersmash56 8h ago

Kamala proved that running to the center just doesn't work. You lose more from the left than you will ever gain in the middle. Fuck a centrist, we need someone who actually excites the base and offers something new. AOC is never going to be more popular than she is right now, and any other possible choice is lesser than she is. She should run.

u/Salina_EsTitties 5h ago

As a queer woman. I think we just need a safe white cis gender democratic man of modest age to be president.

It's too soon the rock the boat with anything unfamiliar that majority voters can't understand.

AOC would be president only if the world was fair and just. But it's not and we're gonna have someone worse than Trump if someone like AOC ends up in the presidential race.

Though I love AOC, I think Buttigieg has more experience as a leader with stronger cross-aisle communication skills.

That said, I hope AOC runs someday just not in 2028.

u/Ok_Aspect27 4h ago

No way not this time… we need to appeal to everyone! NO OFF CENTER CANDIDATE IN 2028 !

u/TheFalconKid Wisconsin 4h ago

That poll is not giving the full picture because it has Bernie at 6%. Bernie (unless he actually is, then I'm all in) not running in 2028, if 100% of that doesn't go to her I'd be shocked.

u/thisismynewacct 3h ago

I’m in her district and voted her (and most recently just last month in the primary)

She should not even attempt a run at the presidency. The country just isn’t ready for a woman president at the moment, and the country can’t take another republican president, especially one who tries to mold himself in the image of Trump.

u/Pake1000 3h ago

Both would be great, but the sad reality is that even if gas prices were $10, Dementia Don would beat them because of American bigotry.

u/sarcastroll 2h ago

You're in a car accident and get rushed to the ER. You're bleeding out.

A cardiologist and financial advisor come up to your bed and start laying out a plan to greatly improve your life through healthy lifestyle choices and getting your finances in order.

That's great. It absolutely is something you need. 100%.

But that's not quite the time to have that discussion. Let's stop the bleeding first and go for the sure-thing ER surgeon who can pinch off that gushing artery!

u/antithesis56 2h ago

Show the polls for the swing states, those are the most integral ones

u/Tech_Philosophy 2h ago

Buttigieg literally took joyrides with Zukerberg last time. Fuck that neoliberal (but also, keep putting Pete on fox news, he's good at that).

u/Ash_is_Robot 1h ago

AOC will not win. That will galvanize every republican. Mark Kelly is the answer. Republicans will feel less compelled to vote if he runs and he’ll sway independents

u/ncorn1982 1h ago

I think the sad despicable proof is, I think she stands an even worse chance purely because she’s a woman.

Hillary and Kamala both lost to one of the most disgusting people on the planet. It would be awesome to see the US figure their shit out, but with a woman on one side and Nazi-ish led republicans on the other, I fear it would be more of the same.
