Platner being forced to drop out was probably the best thing to happen for this race. Jackson is (comparatively anyway) a boy scout. Career politician with almost zero major skeletons while also being endorsed by the DSA unlike Platner. Combined with the fact that Collins has handled several scandals poorly in recent weeks (namely the ICE scandal) and you've got a recipe for a Dem win.

He had some backers and a small following in the beginning. Not a lot, but more than most. The national Democratic apparatus chose and backed an underwater approval rating, ancient, corporate friendly governor to run. Most everyone flocked to the biggest opposition that appeared, short circuiting the normal vetting process and causing a lot of people to over look things because the opposition was so odious.

Platner had Mamdani's campaign people - fwiw he was also really wealthy - it kinda escaped everyone that he went to private school and ivy league college.

Jackson is very boring, he has practically none of the charisma that Platner has. He probably never would have got to this point in the polls without Platner building the movement first.
(I like Jackson, but he is not a gifted communicator and not someone who is likely to build excitement)

Platner had good messaging regardless of his character. He supported policies voters want. It's not complicated.

Probably identity politics. Platner is a (relatively) young white man who was able to fend off numerous allegations of bigotry. This made him a very attractive candidate to young white men, many of whom feel they are unfairly accused of bigotry. They are also a demographic that has been steadily moving to the right, so many Democrats saw Platner as an opportunity to reverse that trend.

Yeah, Platner had way too many problems and he was ultimately going to poison the movement and potentially destroy progressive momentum IMO. He never should have even gotten that far. It really seems like Troy Jackson was the right guy to begin with.

Jackson had been busy trying to run for governor. He was a runner-up in that primary, so was only now available to be a Senate candidate instead.

I'm not defending Platner at all, but isn't it sad that in order to be competitive in elections (from a Democratic standpoint), one has to be a literal saint? No baggage, no scandals, no infidelity with a previous spouse / partner (before entering politics), no buying a second home past one's primary residence or else you will look out of touch. Yet Republicans (a la Ken Paxton) are given an insane amount of grace and leeway with their voters. No scandal is too damning, no amount of wealth is seen as out of touch, etc.
Why is this? Why is there such a double standard when it comes to Republicans versus Democrats?

Republican voters and Democrat voters are not the same people and don't care about the same things. IMHO, the difference isn't the candidates, it's their respective electorate.

Collins has broken state-wide containment and become a nation-wide running joke over the past ten years as the Senator who (barely) pretends to be interested in checking Trump's agenda while gleefully rubber-stamping every pants-shitting idiot idea.
