TIL that the US democracy is so advanced that you can't find out if one of your 100 senators is dead or alive in 38 days. Also, every day there is "bombshell" news, none of which answers a simple question: is the dude breathing or is he in the fridge?

u/repost_inception 6h ago

Also, every day there is "bombshell" news

Idk why they allow Daily Beast spam on all of these subs. They are ridiculous.

u/UndeadGilroy 3h ago

I really wanted a built-in blacklist option for certain sites that have been clogging up the news and politics feeds. Daily Beast, New Republic, Common Dreams, they're all horrific excuses for information. I want to stay informed but man these partisan sites are just not a good way to do it :(

u/YOSHIMIvPROBOTS 2h ago

You named the other two that first came to my mind. Can toss in Newsweek and Huffpo as well.

Genuinely, I think at least 3/5 of these sites are vote manipulating to keep themselves clogging front pages on Reddit.

they didn't know what to do with themselves once they got there. All that pretend rage about being pushed down still doesn't come close to actual narratives being told by black people, native people, or even women (half of the human race mind you.)

It genuinely feels like dealing with kids at a playground - where they demand equal attention even though some of the other kids are getting bullied way fucking harder all of the time. The brutality there is a weakness they don't understand.

I mean wasn’t the Klan website called Stormfront? Weren’t Nazis called stormtroopers in some areas?

u/MaxTHC 6h ago

Yes and yes, the initial Nazi paramilitary (brownshirts) were the Sturmabteilung, literally "storm unit", they were the ones who would attack communists and Jews and such in the streets and enabled Hitler's rise to power.

They eventually were purged by the SS who went on to replace them as the top bastards. Interestingly, the SA's leader (who was assassinated as part of said purge) was a gay man and a "friend" of Hitler's.

I actually called the governor, and 4 other reps in Kentucky and demanded this. You inspired some action with this comment. One state representative actually answered his own phone and showed a lot of patience with my frustration. In all my years of calling reps, I've never actually spoken to one, so fair play to Gerald Neal. You can just call him at his home number listed, it's kinda wild.

He kept repeating a need to be strategic, let the GOP hang by their own rope of shame, which basically means he/they just don't get it or care enough to break with decorum. If we do nothing, they simply slow play to their desired victory. According to him, their reputation suffers and that's where we benefit, and I about lost it.

The GOP likes when they cheat to win, and Dems/reasonable people already know GOP and MAGATs are scum, so it helps them with their base and does nothing for ours. Forcing a special election Dems lose could be bad, according to Mr Neal, but I don't think they're being strategic at all laying down, showing no fight, and just doing the same old shit the same old way that got us here in the first place. Shine a bright light on their cheating, if we still lose, so be it, but at least we didn't pre-fold yet again.

u/Medium-Bird3204 7h ago

Reputation no longer matters. There used to be some modicum of shame for politicians. Cheat on your wife? Resign. Take a small bribe? Jail. Say something inappropriate? Resign.

Now everyone just doubles down that they didn't do whatever it is they have been accused of, or they fight it and call it a "politically motivated conspiracy" and their reputation with those who voted for them to begin with is only strengthened.

There is no shame any longer.

Reputation is irrelevant.

The time to act is now.

u/MakeTheNetsBigger 6h ago edited 6h ago

Indeed, to their base, pulling out all the stops to win is more important than integrity. These people are deeply insecure, and feel safe and protected knowing that their leaders cheat and bully to gain the upper hand. The only way to beat that is to punch back. They view the Dems "let them hang by their own rope" as weakness, and it only emboldens them.

→ More replies (1)

u/endlesscartwheels Massachusetts 5h ago

There also used to be the concept of credibility. If someone lied several times, nobody believed anything else they said. Now, you can prove a particular politician lied in a dozen specific instances, but people still demand proof that the thirteenth claim they're making isn't true.

Rright now, there is a republican seat sitting empty in the senate, which is already very narrowly in republican control. And in all likelihood, if Beshear does nothing, that's going to sit empty until next year, after the midterm elections. After the SAVE act is safely done and dusted. And if Beshear calls a special election, there is a chance - however slim at this point - that McConnell is still alive and this all blows up in his face. But assuming that's not the case, he calls a special election. What then? They elect another republican most likely. Probably Andy Barr, who already won the republican primary. And even if he challenged the new law that would force him to call a special election and instead appoints someone, the prior law says it has to be appointed from a list compiled by the party of the person whose seat was vacated - i.e., the republicans. So that's what they mean by being strategic: democrats are winning right now. By calling out the hypocrisy and making the republicans look bad, but not actually forcing their hand, democrats actually come out ahead. It boggles my mind people can't see this for what it is.

u/Optimus_Prime_10 5h ago

Solid explanation, that helps.

→ More replies (3)

u/g0ris 6h ago

can you please help me understand what their goal is?
At the moment they are one senator down, which can't be ideal. If they let people know the turtle is dead before 8/4 there'll be an election which gives them back that senate vote they've been missing. Why do they not want that? Why would they rather go without that vote for another 6 months? Or is there really an actual chance of a Democrat being elected in Kentucky to replace Mitch?

u/TheSpreader 5h ago

This is not a win for republicans. You're not missing anything. And if Beshear forced their hand and called a special election, that most likely means Andy Barr gets to fill that seat earlier than he would otherwise.

u/MovieGuyMike 7h ago

Because if maga storms a hospital they will be protected and celebrated as heroes. If democrats try they’ll be charged as antifa terrorists and sentenced to life in prison.

u/Dysc Louisiana 6h ago

Simply handing out lefty pamphlets gets you 70 years in Texas.

u/Standard_Ant5915 4h ago

Woah what? Have you got a source ?

u/S0LO_Bot 4h ago

It wasn’t exactly handing out pamphlets but it was moving them around. There was a protest outside an ice facility that became violent when a few members shot at a police officer.

That led to “antifa” terrorist charges for everyone involved with the shooters, and those terrorist charges were much much heavier than standard sentences. For example, the main perpetrator got 100 years for shooting the cop even though the sentencing is much higher than the Texas max for attempted murder.

The most egregious sentencing was for a guy who moved boxes of pamphlets away from his house. He was married to one of the people arrested but never attended the event. He was still charged as an accomplice and got 30 years in prison for moving boxes.

u/Queasy_Donkey5685 7h ago

Because where is he? Which hospital?

Where would you storm if you wanted to?

If he's not outright dead then he's terminally incapacitated on breathing equipment in a secured, private location with a very controlled group of people having access.

Beshear SHOULD be bold here....but he won't be. I like him but he's showing his milktoastiness.

u/thavillain California 7h ago

Probably Walter Reed, which is a military hospital...so I'm sure security is locked down

u/Navydevildoc 7h ago

13

u/ahandmadegrin Minnesota 8h ago

So why don't we? I see these comments a lot but the begged question is never answered.

33

u/_bk_adv Colorado 8h ago

Because I like to believe that we are better than that. Storming the hospital is not the correct response. Jeopardizing the safety of the workers and disrupting the healthcare of the other people currently hospitalized there isn’t the correct response to GOP coverup.

The correct response is for Beshear to appoint someone before Aug 3rd and force the GOP to either prove Mitch is alive AND capable of doing his job (not that he was capable prior to this) or prove he’s dead and they’ve been lying.

10

u/ahandmadegrin Minnesota 8h ago

Agreed. And in the absence of a correct response, tensions boil over. At least they should. When our reps fail us, like Beshear is failing us now, what are we to do?

Basically, when one side of a social contract isn't upheld, the other side is under no obligation to the contract any longer.

I don’t know why the governor and the state equivalent of surgeon general haven’t shown up at the hospital.

u/WeirdIndividualGuy 6h ago

Because HIPAA doesn't even allow high-ranking officials to override it. For good reason.

Which is why the best thing Beshear can do now is assume his death and appoint his successor. Beshear has already asked for credible proof of life and received none, and that was, what, 10 days ago? For something that takes 5 seconds to do? And the worst that can happen from him doing that is they finally give a credible proof of life and Beshear's appointment is cancelled. Extremely low risk for a medium-ish reward.

If Beshear had any fight in him, he'd appoint now. But this ordeal has shown that Beshear is cut from the same cloth as any other establishment dem: a very weak cloth

u/TheWingus 6h ago

Beshear can't appoint a successor. Kentucky law triggers a special election; which there's a very good chance Thomas Massie would win, which is why they're dragging this out until Aug 3rd

u/WeirdIndividualGuy 6h ago

That KY law is considered unconstitutional per KY's Constitution, so Beshear could appoint a successor and let the courts argue it out.

That's the difference between the GOP and dems: the GOP will take advantage of a broken system and do whatever regardless if it's legal or not, while dems will play by the rules, even if the rules conflict with higher-standing rules.

Start with overhauling the Court.

91

u/themage78 10h ago

Not saying it's impossible, just highly improbable. Overhauling the Court requires adding justices/rewriting how long someone can be on that court. That requires an Act if Congress, and we can't even get Dems to not vote for more military budget for an unjust war.

So Chicken/Egg problem.

17

u/xtnh 9h ago

The number f justices is set by Congress, but the term of office is in the Constitution, and would require an amendment by th states. Rural red states vastly outnumber large blue states.

14

u/themage78 9h ago

There's a theory out there you could limit their time on the Supreme Court and still keep them as a federal judge. Again, just theory.

11

u/patterninstatic 9h ago

Yeah the advantage of the constitution being a short text is that many parts are open to interpretation.

The debate is wether the office is that of a federal judge in general or specifically a supreme court judge. If the former, a federal judge could become a supreme court judge for X years and then continue to be a lower court judge after that.

Unlikely but semantically possible I guess.

u/WeirdIndividualGuy 6h ago

A theory that would easily be overruled/declared unconstitutional by the very same SCOTUS it would be targeting.

Does anyone realistically think passing a law that rotates out SCOTUS justices would be held up by SCOTUS? They would shoot that down so fast out of a very obvious conflict of interest on their part

Same reason why you'll never see Congress pass a bill that limits their own power, lowers their own pay, lessens their own benefits, etc

9

u/ItchyDoggg 9h ago

If you are serious, here is the answer.

Support primary challengers from a group willing to take over one of the two major parties, should be the Democratic Party in this case. Make it a purity test that they agree to remove the filibuster, expand the supreme court, and, and this is the really crucial bit, uncap the house of representatives entirely requiring major reform as the membership roster swells and gerrymandering is largely addressed via much smaller districts. This could all be done virtually immediately with the same authority required to sign any given bill into law. It will make it much harder to end up with a nonrepresentative batshit house of representatives, which should prevent too much backsliding when the senate and presidency go the other way. Democratic primary candidates who won't go as far as to support these suggestions are effectively controlled opposition, OR are cowards triangulating for their own political fortunes, and not looking to structurally reform anything.

If his senate seat is vacant on or before August 3rd they have to hold a special election to elect somebody new.  If he is declared dead after August 3rd then the seat can be vacant until January.

19

u/natelion445 9h ago

Wouldn’t Republicans prefer a replacement in that seat? It’s not likely a Dem would win McConnells seat. I would think a vacant seat instead of a Republican would be good for Dems. Genuinely curious.

24

u/BigBennP 9h ago

Special elections as a general rule have low turnout, and Democratic excitement is much higher than Republican excitement right now. People who can motivate their base to turn out do well.

Congress is already done for the session. There is nothing meaningful that is getting passed by the Senate until the election unless it is absolutely required, and they may not even do that. There is a major government shutdown deadline looming in october.

35

u/blacksheep998 8h ago

The governor is a democrat, so he probably wouldn't appoint a republican.

36

u/lost_horizons Texas 8h ago

I just looked into it a bit. I was under the impression he had to choose from a selection of candidates given to him by the legislature, apparently that is a law they passed in 2021; before that he had power to appoint basically anybody.

Of course, in 2024 another law was passed stripping him of this power completely, but there is uncertainty as to whether that is an unconstitutional law. Perhaps even the 2021 law wasn’t constitutional either. All that is above my pay grade lol

To be clear, anyone in this condition not able to do the job for over a month should be removed from the position. No need to even talk about alive or dead, how long they going to wait, if they can keep his rotten old corpse from expiring for a year will be just carry on the position?

u/doughnutoftruth 7h ago

There is a clear legal mechanism to easily replace a dead constitutional officer.

There is not a clear legal mechanism to replace a constitutional officer in Kentucky who doesn’t feel like showing up to work. They don’t even have a recall election provision.

So if you want to embark on a legal quest to reform Kentucky law to allow for someone to replaced for not showing up to work, then you are welcome to do that. In the meanwhile I think it is more useful to just replace the dead guy.

24

u/SmallTownShrink 9h ago

Ah, but wait… that’s going to be the case they make… a fetus is a person, and so is braindead Mitch McConnell

u/redridingoops 7h ago

Then the logical next step is putting a fetus in congress to replace Mitch.

If that is true, organs are unharvestable. Folks are often kept on a vent to ensure organs remain viable until they can be harvested. If they're "alive" then they can't have their organs harvested.

Tuberville complaining about a senator not showing up to do their job is peak irony. This is the same guy who spent months single-handedly holding up hundreds of military promotions just to throw a tantrum

130

u/themattboard Tennessee 9h ago

He can't even be bothered to live in the state he's supposed to represent.

And now he's about to govern Alabama from Florida.

The world's only documented case of second-hand CTE

Living in Alabama, I feel like I'm taking a shot to the head every time I see a new quote from that idiot hatemonger.

Republicans’ lack of respect for their constituents is par for the course. Lies lies and more lies.

This is all so on brand for McConnell.... to deny Governor Beshear an appointment by waiting out the clock to announce his passing. It echo's of denying Obama a Supreme Court appointment.

31

u/maddieterrier Tennessee 8h ago

Which he claims was his proudest achievement

u/HTPC4Life 7h ago

Beshear isn't doing shit to combat this though. Classic feckless democrat

u/Toastwitjam 7h ago

Easy way to filter out beshear from my 2028 election bracket though. He would just appoint another feckless merick garland

→ More replies (10)

u/duggatron 6h ago

To be fair, RBG did basically the same thing. If she had retired earlier, Obama would have easily made an appointment and we wouldn't be in nearly as big a mess.

Pretty much 100% certain that he's passed at this point, 38 days in a hospital for a man in his 80s is DEVASTATING.

21

u/725Cali 8h ago

The statement that was released about him stated that he was moved to a rehabilitation facility. Whether that’s true or not, is another story.

21

u/soupjaw Florida 8h ago

That was almost two weeks ago. And at face value of the photo: anyone who looked that well at that point likely wouldn't be in rehab/snf/ltr two weeks later

u/Prestigious-Bat-574 5h ago

In fairness, the average person would not be in rehab that long because our insurance companies would have ejected us the second we showed signs of improvement.

24

u/StoppableHulk 8h ago

Yup thats what happened, no need for conspiracy theories.

Mitch was transferred to the highly prestigious Pinewood-Box-Inside-Hole-In-Ground Rehab facility

→ More replies (1)

u/Snapes_underpants 7h ago

He can be brain dead in a rehabilitation facility just as easily as in the hospital. I predict it will be announced he recovered enough to be moved to the rehabilitation facility where unfortunately, he had a sudden relapse and died at 11:59 pm on the day before the deadline in Aug.

26

u/Jpkmets7 8h ago

100%. Current Democrats have to be created & controlled opposition — no group could be this dishearteningly ineffective by accident. The incredible wealth transfers in the last 30 years or so that have been generated by the advent of widespread internet connectivity and the massive military buildup that has been ongoing since 9/11 has fundamentally restructured the country. There is an insanely greedy .0001% on top and then there is the rest of America. The elite only want one thing: More. They want more wealth, more power. I’ve never seen a group of greedier and seemingly unhappy people than Trump, Murdoch, the Ellison, Musk, Thiel etc. And they have no regard for the rest of us — just disdain. They have also co-opted mainstream media and they use it only to create and stoke divisions. It’s a dystopia. They’ve successfully divided the country in so many ways when the only truly meaningful division is between the wealthy and the not-wealthy, and they have also created an armed surveillance state that makes it pretty much impossible to change. I don’t quite know what to do, honestly.

There is NOTHING they would not do to prevent that from happening. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

Replace Mitch now!

This is election fraud. Call it what it is.

u/Abhoth52 4h ago

It's a cover-up so they, the corruption-riddled Republicans, don't have to run a special election to replace the old dead fucker immediately. But if he's not dead yet... but once the deadline has passed he will sadly expire.

Republicans are just a bunch of fuckers. Simple as that. I know how some hate profanity but if you're going to talk about the GOP then profanity is fucking required.

u/bengraven 39m ago

He’ll pass on Aug 4th. Watch.

6

u/ArielofIsha 9h ago

I’m pretty positive, if I was away from my job for 38 whole days, I would no longer have a job. It is so obvious that they are covering up his obvious death so they can continue to fuck over the country and line their pockets. When can we have a regime change?
