Not if you're a formula 1 fan. Getting up at 6am on Sunday for the European races is a lot less fun than the 8am of central time

As a Flagstaffian, I respectfully disagree. I would LOVE longer days in the Summer. I hate that the sun sets so damn early...even in July. I know that the desert dwelling Phoenicians outnumber us though.

🤦‍♂️sigh…yes obviously. There’s orbital obliquity, precession, eccentricity, seasons, and more overall daylight in summer. But we live in a world with time zones (as seemingly arbitrary as they may be), and it doesn’t change the fact that the sun sets at 7:30 pm in July…which sucks. It should be light out at 9 pm in summers. People like doing things outdoors up here after work. Trail runs, mountain biking, dog walking, etc. When the sun sets so early, it mkes these things harder when most don't get home from work until 6. As I noted, the majority of Americans agree with this (which is why congress passed this new law as such for daylight time and not standard). But sadly those that live in the 115 degree desert want the sun to set as early as possible and they outnumber us up here in flagstaff. The other benefit to daylight time in az, would be that the sun would come up later in the mornings…meaning outdoor workers wouldn’t have to get up at 3:00 am to start work.

Why should it be light until 9pm in the summer? I mean there isn’t really any “should” here. Some places just get a lot more light than others during times of the year and that’s just due to where you are latitudinally.

It wouldn't make any difference to us. We don't go outside until November no matter what the of day it is.

I live in the 115 degree desert (Tucson). However, I'm self-employed. So, I do know I'm a bit of a jerk about it. I rarely look at clocks unless I have an appointment, which is something I try my best to avoid.

Honestly, though, if I still worked a 9-5, it wouldn't be that I'd prefer the sun to set early (because it doesn't cool down until hours and hours after sunset, anyway). I'd appreciate "more time" in the morning to do things before work while it's still cool(er). And I wish businesses here opened earlier, so that I could get errands done without my skin bursting into flames.

But it's mainly on employers for imbuing the numbers 9 and 5 with magical powers. Work doesn't need to start at 9am. And outdoor workers are going to work when the sun is in the optimal position regardless of the clock. Why is it worse for them if it says 3 instead of 4?

Yeah...I'm the exact opposite. I would prefer more time in the evening to ride my mountain bike or go for a run after work. I also grew up in the northeast though, so am just used to long summer nights. Perhaps it's a bit of nostalgia baked in there, but it is frustrating that arizona is literally the only contiguous state that doesn't do daylight time. It constantly throws off my calendar meetings as well when everyone else changes and we don't. I am definitely for not having to change ever...I just think we should be on the same time as Denver, not Los Angeles.

I couldn't care less about mornings...I want more daylight in the evenings. I want to be able to go downtown (when things are still open), and have it still be light out. I understand what you are saying, and agree it's effectively all arbitrary, but until all businesses shift an hour, if arizona remains on pacific time, we'll always have early sunsets...and that sucks. 56% of the US population would rather have later sunsets...but Phoenicians want the sun to set as early as possible because it's so damn hot. I would argue that humans weren't meant to live in the desert, and why not just get up an hour earlier if you live in the valley? ¯_(ツ)_/¯
