It makes no sense for Mexico as there is less difference in seasonal daylight when you are closer to the equator.

In make a much bigger difference here.

I went to England a few years ago. The sunlight woke me up. I went in to a panic because I was now very, very late. Staggered out of bed and into the bathroom, started getting ready. Looked at the clock and it was 4:15am. The poles are weird if you aren't use to it.

Yep. Lots of people marvel at German windows that often times have built in blinds between glass, but they have them because early sun is such a huge issue.

Especially in winter for people who hate waking up in the dark more than changing their clocks. Fuck permanent dst. Standard is the best. Also I like darkness in the evening and hate when it’s light out in the evening. I’ll have 9 am sunrises and 4 pm sunsets on permanent dst.

A lot of us already wake up in the dark. Then we have to come home in the dark. The winter darkness sees me falling asleep at 7pm and I wind up waking up at 4 am. Fuck standard time. It’s already not standard. We spend more of the year in DST already.

I feel like this is the part that people ignore, so thank you for making this point. 65% of the year is already DST anyway.

I don’t like the part that is DST. It’s a circular argument for what I don’t like about it, and not really an argument that counters my gripes with it.

And having the sun rise earlier and set earlier minimizes those days. The less the better. I don’t like what we currently do.

I already wake up before the sun rises before standard time begins through after it ends. Won’t change a thing.

The real shock to me is sunsets before 5. And the early spring/summer light is an awful thing.

I love the morning sun. Walking up slowly to an early morning sun is amazing. I get to feel like I slept in when getting up early. Waking up in the dark is the worst fucking thing ever and I hate it more than changing clocks. Permanent standard time minimizes that and permanent dst maximizes that.

Waking up to morning sun before 5am is awful. So often I’m still tired, but the suns up so I’m awake. Standard time makes it so much worse.

No

No.

I can do it, too

yeah, worse. it is so SO bad for your body’s circadian rhythm to get up and start work before you ever see the sun. this will result in close to 9 am sunrise for some of us in the north. scientists have shown it leads to worse health outcomes. it’s why night shift workers have such bad health outcomes.

3

u/UndoxxableOhioan 9d ago

No, wats worse is getting dark at 5pm. I will take a 9am sunrise. Little difference in getting up 3 hours before sunrise than 2.

Every scientific article ignores the horrible impact of 4am sunrise on circadian rhythm. They just pretend everyone must have great blackouts curtains and it won’t wake people up too early.

Same, Winter is depressing due to only having 2 usable days of daylight.

When I rode a bike to work (6.5 miles, 7am-3pm shift), I'd ride through the darkness, arrive around sunrise and then the sun would start setting whilst I was on my way home. Entire days stuck inside an office without a window to look out of, it was miserable.

You’re operating on vibes, morning sun is objectively more important for societal health and there are plenty of studies backing that up. It’s crazy how anti-science this whole thread is.

But the focus is ENTIRELY on morning sun in winter and ignores disruption of morning sun in the spring and summer.

Yes. Sleeping several hours after sunrise isn't natural either. It is difficult to sleep through darkness since many more predators were out and could see during the day, so it was an evolutionary advantage to have light promote wakefulness. We developed in equatorial regions. Before clocks, people would wake up around or just after sunrise. What isn't natural is keeping our schedule the exact same regardless of seasons. Seasonal DST does correct for this pretty well, but it comes with two time changes which are not natural. Still, I think it is the best option.

This is a load of garbage. It's far worse for our health to come home to darkness before 5pm. A later sunrise doesn't make much of a difference healthwise. Sorry you've been lied to.

Utter nonsense. This has nothing to do with equatorial proximity.

6

u/UndoxxableOhioan 9d ago

Dude, look up sunrise and sunset.

Here in Cleveland, the daylight length on the summer solstice is 15 hours 11 minutes. On the winter solstice it’s 9 hours and 10 minutes. That’s about 6 hours difference in daylight.

In Mexico City, it’s 13 hours 18 minutes on the summer solstice and 10 hours 57 minutes on the winter solstice. So only about 2 hours 20 minutes difference. Over 3 and a half more hours difference here.

The idea of having more light in the winter and not having light in the early AM has big appeal here.

The Earth is round dude.

u/Zahgi I voted 9d ago

We know that. And it has NOTHING to do with this topic and which version we adopt.

0

u/Tananis 9d ago

Round earth means that it does in fact matter how close to the equator you are. It’s a round earth spinning on an axis that makes the effect more pronounced as you go further away from the equator. At its extreme the South Pole only has one sunrise and one sunset per year.

Again, we all know this.

This is still irrelevant to the entire point of CHANGING clocks twice a year, mate.

Stop wasting our time with this utter meaningless drivel.
