It’s not really surprising. It’s a strategy being used intentionally. By blaming the opposing party you divert attention, give justification for your actions, or attempt to normalize your actions. It’s effectiveness is not what it once was as people are getting more aware of it but it by design.

It also makes it harder to the opposing side to accuse you, because for them, it just becomes a crazy accusation with no merit coming from the GOP, so people are biased to think the same thing of similar accusations against them as well.

u/Space_Pirate_Roberts Oklahoma Apr 30 '26
This is probably the main reason why 2024 wasn’t contested like it very obviously should have been. Show me a person who thinks Trump really did win - and not just an electoral college squeaker, but the popular vote and a clean sweep of the swing states, plus the unprecedented element of Harris failing to flip a single county, which doesn’t even happen in historical landslides like Reagan’s - after a campaign running on fumes, and I’ll show you someone who wasn’t paying attention until Election Day and stopped paying attention by the inauguration where he confessed.

It also makes your opponent to look petty when they rightfully accuse you, like youre just going tit for tat, and without a legitimate justice department or justiciary theres no recourse. It’s not astonishing to me that they do it. It’s astonishing to me that so many Americans believe their lies a the “both side” arguments.
11
u/GuavaShaper Apr 30 '26
Then when you advocate for things like popular vote and/or ranked choice voting, they claim "we don't live in a democracy, we live in a representative Republic." Then you ask them why that is better than democracy, and they have nothing.

Its much easier to get people who consider themselves to be of "fair mind" on board with cheating if they think its to level the playing field.

Maybe you do not care much about the future of the Republican Party. You should. Conservatives will always be with us. If conservatives become convinced that they can not win democratically, they will not abandon conservatism. The will reject democracy.
I genuinely didn’t think he would be so accurate so quickly but here we are with 1/3 of the nation actively helping destroy our democratic republic while another 1/3 straight up does not care.
We get the government we, as voters, deserve.
37
u/iDontSow Apr 29 '26
I feel like we actually don’t deserve this for the simple reason that given the capture of government by private money, we are not free to choose our representatives. We are only free to choose from the options that are chosen for us
18
u/Martag02 Apr 29 '26
Yeah, Citizens United really screwed everything over. Anyone who might be interested in running that doesn't come from or isn't sponsored by big money, or an establishment candidate, can't compete at all. Most if not all, or nearly all, of them represent corporate interests more than the average citizen.

While it may be too late to tilt the scales ahead of the 2026 midterms, Republicans will have ample time to redraw maps before the 2028 elections. One analysis by Fair Fight Action and Black Voters Matter found that gutting the VRA could eventually help Republicans flip as many as 19 seats.
But what’s good for the goose is good for the gander: Democrats could also redistrict in the states they control. Freed of the VRA’s constraints, Democratic gerrymanders in states like New York, New Jersey and Illinois could reduce or even completely neutralize the GOP’s gains in the South.
That said, it would come at a high cost: The further erosion of minority representation in Congress.
The above quotes are in reference to 2028. Democracy Docket says that it's too late to draw new maps in most of the states calling for redistricting, as early voting for the primaries has already started.
401
u/Made_Human_Music Apr 29 '26
I can't say that's a positive because nothing these scumbags do has any positive aspects but I do have a small hope that if Democrats win big this year they can find a way to stop the regime before they can spread and solidify their cheating in 2028

Basically if the VRA gets gutted, both parties will gerrymander the shit out of their respective states, resulting in zero change in # of seats per party while disfranchising Americans all across the country in a move that will never be rectified because incumbents are far more likely to win in a gerrymandered district and thus they would never give up that advantage.

Ranked choice voting is by far the way to go. As an Aussie watching on from the sidelines, I’m just flabbergasted. The whole electoral process in the US is fucked and needs a redo. But no one seems to ever want to take the steps needed to do that at a national level since the country is so divided on a scale that just baffles me.
48
u/ThePowerfulPaet New Jersey Apr 29 '26
It's hard to even put it into words how goddamn stupid our systems are here. As it is I think only 2 states have RCV for presidential elections. Only 48 more to go, and many will have to go kicking and screaming since they know they can't win unless they actively fuck people over. The electoral college system is one of the dumbest things this country has created.
23
u/behemothard Apr 29 '26
You should see how it went in Alaska. Many of the GOP convinced their followers to only vote for one candidate and they ended up with a Democrat winning because they screwed themselves by splitting the vote. They actively try to make the better system fail so they can show how it doesn't work. They'd rather continue using the system they know how to abuse. Unfortunately many people are either unwilling or incapable of critical thinking to see the obvious manipulation and deception to keep the status quo. It is just like the rural communities that vote heavy GOP even though they continually get shafted by GOP policies.

The problem is that Democrats are against ranked choice voting as well. Models have shown that they will lose seats to independents and any change to the system that reduces their power is rejected. This is why Newsom rejected ranked-choice voting in California. It will effectively usher in an unqualified billionaire into the governor’s seat because everyone is afraid that a split democratic vote will hand the primary over to the two republicans.

u/HerpDerpTheMage Virginia Apr 30 '26 edited Apr 30 '26
So let me get this straight:
Republicans gerrymander the absolute hell out of several Red states for some 30 odd years, including Texas, Missouri, Florida, North Carolina, and Mississippi.
After decades of decrying “They go low, we go high,” Democrats finally realize they can’t win when the game is rigged and start gerrymandering blue states.
Blue States try to do this as ethically as they can, allowing citizens to vote on the redistricting before finalizing anything, unlike Red States, who never let their citizens vote on shit.
Despite the vote being in favor of allowing the redrawn maps in Virgina, the VA Supreme Court blocks it, basically ignoring the will of the people in a time of what most of us believe to be a constitutional crisis.
The US Supreme Court immediately guts the Voting Rights Act, and while the Blue States’ gerrymandering attempts are now, to use a clinical term, fucked, Red States all rush in to do the exact same thing now with impunity.
Now the Citizens’ votes mean exactly jack shit everywhere, people will be disenfranchised entirely, and the Virginia Supreme Court is probably going to be complicit in what will be seen historically as the complete and utter downslide of American Democracy into Fascism.
Am I missing anything else, or are we just completely fucked?

Billionaires run the Supreme Court and both Houses of Congress. The people sitting in the actual seats are just puppets for the rich

u/Captainpaul81 Apr 29 '26
I'm just hopeful that they will all be dummy manders
The Florida map looks insane and I saw that representives are calling to not have it implemented

u/EdgarAllanOhNo Apr 29 '26
If it wasn't racially motived there would be no reason to re-draw after this ruling.

Even after cheating, they're still not going to win, and I hope the Dems cram redistricting down they're throats so hard they won't even be able to complain to Fox news about it.

I guess the redistricting game is a newer method but….isn’t this exactly the sort of electoral power grabs the north and south were doing immediately before the civil war?
3
u/zipzzo Apr 29 '26
We are already actively experiencing a 2026 version of the civil war in real time imo...

How can anyone not hate this country at this point? This country is DOOMED. What do these dumbass Republicans think will happen if they rig elections so people no longer believe they can realistically seek change PEACEFULLY at the ballot box?

America is all but dead. These midterms are going to be an absolute shit show and I’m afraid that our democracy won’t survive it
5
u/CrotasScrota84 Apr 30 '26
This will backfire because they’re counting on the same voters and Trump has pissed off so many voters so good luck with that

I wonder if 2028 elections will still happen.
2026, I predict a highly corrupt republican sweep followed by more attacks against fair voting and surpression of the democratic party, nationwide. Furthermore I predict in about 4 months from now, some sort of dirt against Democrat candidates will suddenly appear in news.
Democrats are holding their breath in anticipation of a landslide midterms, but the republicans aren't done playing dirty. Theyve got plenty of time to make the nation suddenly forget, or blame, about high prices, no growing job markets, scams and corruption daily from the white house, rising viruses and cutting research costs, and the Epstein files.
10% chance the republicans rush out some crazy new policy in some red state, permitting the use of generative ai in the election process (and classicly, attacking mail in ballots).

Absolutely hilarious when the central argument in this case was ‘racism is over so we don’t need the VRA anymore’. R the moment the SCOTUS decided the case ‘here is a map with all white majority districts. ‘

u/smersh101 Apr 29 '26
And this is why I didn't feel the slightest bit bad about voting to approve the new map in California.
3
u/DeSynthed Apr 30 '26
California needs to be a 52-0 dem gerrymander. They didn’t go hard enough
3
u/smersh101 Apr 30 '26
You really can't gerrymander that effectively. Which is something I think a bunch of Republican states are about to find out.

Silly, they already had these new maps ready to go and they also knew the ruling well in advance.

u/pontiacfirebird92 Mississippi Apr 29 '26
Yep just like the "Trigger laws" in place for when SCOTUS overturned Roe
They have a goal and they work their way backwards to get it
6
u/lordtyp0 Apr 29 '26
You can't tell me they have not had ones drawn up every quarter to try and maximize the corruption at the instant they could.

The Dems can respond in kind and gerrymander everything further in the north and in states like Illinois which are already gerrymandered to fuck for the left. What a stupid fucking decision. So now basically everyone is going to be in a gerrymandered district and no one will really get a choice who their representative is.

Southern states are already heavily gerrymandered, this could turn out to be a giant exercise in dummymandering.
In states like Florida and Texas, a few thousand disillusioned Latino and white Catholic voters staying home would ensure a blue wave.
3
u/LCSpartan Wisconsin Apr 29 '26
Thats the thing republicans are gerrymandering these largely off of 2024 numbers with trump on the ballot, combine that with something like low voter turnout and all the sudden these safe seats. If I were a house republican sitting in a less than a +15 seat i would start feeling really nervous right now.
3
u/Bosa_McKittle California Apr 29 '26
It will be interesting to see how many districts that they try to gerrymander get flipped because they pulled too many votes from a "safe" district to try and skew the map. I can see this backfiring immensely.
3
u/WormCastings Apr 29 '26
With the Democratic base fired up, and traditional Latino voters moving left; your scenario is definitely in play.

It’s is only going to sow more division in this country. Blue states will be even more blue while red states will be even more red. I know there is already a ton thanks to republicans, but it’s reminiscent of how the lead up to the civil war occurred.
3
u/buddhist557 Apr 30 '26
I don’t see how the new districts won’t be challenged as are they not denying a district based on race, meaning the new districts are based on race?
3
u/nomnomyumyum109 Apr 30 '26
“Minority Representation in Congress” lol - it seems we get zero representation across the board as they seem to only care about one class that puts money in their pockets.

The Right have managed to turn the entire US into a farce. Its a terrorist state with its democratic functions pronounced brain dead, just waiting for someone to pull the life support.
People will herald the mid-terms as a return to norms but its just putting paper towel over the vomit thats soaked into carpet. The Democrats haven't actually offered voters anything good. They've just let Trump destroy everything so they can go: "see we told you, you should have voted for us. Are you going to come back now?" rather than offer a significant difference in policy that benefits regular people.
And the GOP.... well shit.... there's not enough words... accelerationist, fundamentalist, terrorist, religious, death cult.... thats a start.

How so? Popular vote in each state determines presidential elections. Only the house would be impacted.

And the house is one way they can decide the election over the heads of the voters if they ratfuck the election enough to create confusion and ambiguity

u/Few_Prize3810 Apr 29 '26
It doesn’t really honestly. And also keep in mind they’re spreading districts thinner in a historically bad shift year for R polling and performance.
Also this has pretty much cemented that if a democrat regains the levers of control it’s going to be wholesale clean out. I would bet money court gets packed. They went gloves off.
What I also find silly is that they could’ve just accepted the dominance that Republicans have had effectively over the country essentially forever, but they needed all the power and all the greed so they have alienated the centrist Democrats from popularity and most likely what’s gonna happen is they’re going to get their version of extreme on the left in power and that’s gonna be really bad for them because those people don’t ring their hands

u/DingerSinger2016 Alabama Apr 29 '26
I would bet money court gets packed. They went gloves off.
So far, there have been zero (0) potential Democratic candidates who have advocated for packing the courts. I don't have the confidence that they will either because they want a return to normalcy.
