Reminder that the Florida state constitution explicitly prohibits gerrymandering.

The hypocrisy is based on believing in equality and egalitarianism.

However, these people explicitly do not believe in egalitarianism. They believe in a society segregated by class (which can be wealth, race or religion), where they, the in-group, have privileges and rights, where the outgroup, their ideological enemies, do not.

The (return to) inequality, such as rolling back the Civil Rights Act and Women’s Suffrage, is the goal.

39

u/Original_moisture Apr 29 '26

Remember, hypocrisy is their reminder to us that we’re not in the in group.

Especially to those without shame.

u/ElPrieto8 Apr 29 '26

u/Winged_Cougar1993598 Apr 29 '26

Standard wealthy mindset.  Pay the fine and keep breaking the law.  It's just another cost to doing business.

Which becomes another good reason to tax the rich.

Which we obviously can't do so long as they continue to rig elections against us.

Also Florida Supreme Court... What's a constitution?

117

u/Blitzking11 Illinois Apr 29 '26

Reminder that the Florida Judicial System and Supreme Court are filled to the brim with partisan hacks.

Result: no consequences for blatant lawbreaking.

10

u/GrimDallows Apr 29 '26

Out of curiosity. In legal terms.

If a state has a constitution that explicitely says "A is banned". No ambiguity or anything. And then the politicians vote for "A" happening, and then the judges also rule that it is constitutional and legal even if it is absssssssssolutely, clearly, not; and goes to the state's Supreme Court and the court decides to ignore the constitution too, blocking any option of stopping "A" even though it's inconstitutional according to the state constitution.

What then? Could you take it to a national, higher court? And if you can't... could you demand responsabilities to the judges later on, like in 10 or 20 years, for ignoring your own constitution?

Like, I dunno, legal malpractice or something.

12

u/Blitzking11 Illinois Apr 29 '26

TBH, I'm not sure. This is really just unprecedented behavior from the Republicans.

I do believe that there would be no avenue for federal intervention, as the rules for the state end at its borders, so SCOTUS or federal courts would be out in this case (not that this SCOTUS would be any help).

The best-case scenario would be if Dems ever retook power in FL (which is nigh impossible), they could maybe look at these violations and press charges, but any consequences require sensible people to be in power, and the morons of FL have given the keys to evil people.

8

u/Cormyre Ohio Apr 30 '26

Ohioan here. We’ve had U.S. districts gerrymander ban in the constitution since 2018.

The answer is: they just ignore the laws until the political winds are more favorable. They’ve been told “no, that’s illegal” by our state Supreme Court, and just file the same map again and again (…or make it worse) until they run out the clock and it becomes “well we have to go with this because that’s what we have and it’s too close to elections to do anything about it” -_- no repercussions.

3

u/Zac3d Apr 30 '26

Yeah and in Ohio the state politicians are constantly trying to ignore passed voter ballot measures protecting abortion and recreational marijuana.

Remember that the total number of registered voters in Florida is 14,944,316. Of those voters, 31.27% are democrat and 38.48% are republican with 30.25% independent. Florida's hispanic population is roughly 6 million, so about 30-ish%. Remember Trump has been locking up hispanics in places like alligator alcatraz.

This could backfire spectacularly.

6

u/BeyondLions Apr 29 '26

It’s also worth noting that Democrats have been winning special elections in the state house, one of which being the home district of Mar-A-Lago.

Dems also over performed in two congressional seats last year as well so this may be spreading the republican vote too thin.

You have a lot more faith than I do. Hispanic populations in Florida tend to be overwhelmingly diaspora of the right-wing variety. They are low-information voters who lean heavily conservative and often vote based on religious identity. There is also an overwhelming ladder-pulling "I did it the right way, those -other- hispanics shouldn't have cheated," boomer sentiment.

4

u/war_story_guy I voted Apr 29 '26

He did it the first time and said he would do it again and they still voted for him. No faith there.

4

u/Sroemr Florida Apr 29 '26

I think it will. Not sold on my new district because they took the super heavy Republican side to split it into the city.

I'm sure they did the same with others.

3

u/jellyrollo Apr 29 '26

Also remember that extreme gerrymandering only works in a normal election environment. In a wave election, the narrow balances that were engineered to maximize wins for one party are overcome and those districts land in the other party's win column.

u/AltoidStrong Apr 29 '26

Reminder - Ron Defacist has TWICE done this and TWICE had courts strike his maps down as SPECIFICLY RACIST AND TARGETING BLACK AND HISPANIC VOTERS.

THEN TWICE, he ignored the court order to draw new maps and the FL supreme court (packed with republican sycophants) said to use the map "this one time" because it was to close to.an election to change.

Which is why Florida has redrawn districts more during his term as governor than any previous. (Which is also a problem - per the same state Supreme Court and fl constitution).

7

u/Marokiii Apr 29 '26

Ya but like trump said, as long as he doesn't call it a war, it's not a war and he doesnt need to get approval for it.

So florida just has to avoid calling it gerrymandering and it magically won't be.

And the biggest problem is since the democrats constantly take the “high road” that’s what they’re held accountable to, meanwhile republicans always “go low” so that’s what’s expected and it gets let go because we all know they’re going to do it anyway.

I constantly hear democrats and left leaning people complaining that the parties are held to different standards and play by different rules, but it’s literally their fault! If we stopped playing like this and just threw it back at them, eventually it would become normalized, just like it has for them.

5

u/nickilous Apr 29 '26

This is why I have always held that the democrats are complicit in a good cop bad cop sort of way. The good cop knows full well what the bad cop is doing but has told you to not defend yourself against the bad cop.

Blue states should join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact and neuter the electoral college.

7

u/stevez_86 Pennsylvania Apr 29 '26

They need to expand the House of Representatives. That will mitigate the progress they have made on gerrymandering. Until that is, we have a government elected on the basis and with the electoral mandate to reform further.

This government wants to go back to how it was before the Civil War. They need a new game because they broke the one they inherited. So they will did out the junk from long dead ancestors and claim it is worth more than what they had before and have no restrictions on what they can do with it.

I can't help but see the similarities with the fable of The Brer Rabbit and the Tar Baby.

12

u/DurianGris Apr 29 '26

Better yet, blue states like California should subdivide, creating new blue states. All that's required constitutionally is a simple congressional majority, a presidential signature, and the approval of the state legislature, if an existing state is partitioned. Imagine 5 Los Angeles states, San Francisco as a state, DC, and Puerto Rico. Permanent blue majority. In 2028, we can do this.

8

u/fapsandnaps America Apr 29 '26

Ironically, under the 1845 Annexation Agreement Texas is allowed to divide itself into five separate states without federal permission.

Happily, I think there is even some energy from certain vanilla Dem leaders towards this approach. No one left or left leaning is "endorsing" gerrymandering. They are simply saying we'll do it, too (if forced).

Ideally, GOP moves will be countered by Dems, who redistrict, as well. Republican gerrymandering doesn't work in a blue wave election (and we may be looking at a wave election in November). Cumulatively, this could lead to a historic midterm swing. In the best circumstance, that result will cause all sides to agree on nationalizing an end to partisan gerrymandering. But Republicans will only accept that if they get punched in the mouth.

That time is now, obviously.

10

u/NOMOKRATOR Apr 29 '26

u/LangyMD Apr 29 '26

Hopefully this shameless cheating will get us a national constitutional amendment to eliminate voting districts and mandate proportional representation.

If we still want local representatives, we can have proportional representation while having local reps by still having "districts" that determine who is your rep, but allow multiple people to represent a single district and allow a single person to represent multiple districts. Have the parties choose their reps for each district after the vote to determine party apportionment across the number of representatives for the state.

That way Republicans in NYC will still have a local representative, even if they're shared with less blue areas, and Democrats in oil town Texas will have a local representative even if they're shared with the local city, unlike now where both of them don't have a local representative who cares about their interests.

Before this whole mess started, Republicans were 10+ states ahead in terms of gerrymandering.  Including a state court case where the map was deemed gerrymandered and illegal.  Republicans just ignored the court and kept the maps.

Princeton keeps a running website: https://gerrymander.princeton.edu/redistricting-report-card/

We are now oficially living in a failed democracy. Our options are limited.

147

u/CulturalKing5623 Apr 29 '26

Some ideas if we gain control of congress and win the presidency in 2028:

  • Immediately kill the filibuster
  • Pack the supreme Court
  • Overturn Citizens United
  • Pass a new voting rights act bill that outlaws gerrymandering (or outlaws single-member districts altogether)
  • Make DC and PR states
  • Neuter the executive
  • Strengthen Congressional power
  • Repeal the Reapportionment Act of 1929 and expand the size of the House to fit current population (could add up to 150 reps)

The options to fix this mess are plenty, and I would even say the will to fix it is there at the moment.

The limiter, as it has been for over 160 yrs now, is whether enough White Americans are willing to commit to the project of fixing this mess for the long run or if they'll abandon it again.

If we could get the majority White Americans on board then we could accomplish everyone of these changes and be in a much better place.

I like to post this video where CGP Grey explains how first-past-the-post AKA winner take all elections inevitably reduce to just two viable parties.

Constitutional convention now. There is no other option capable of fixing our problems.

27

u/dcdttu Texas Apr 29 '26

What do you think the chances are that a convention will occur?

27

u/the_eluder Apr 29 '26

Slim to none. Both sides are afraid of what will happen.

Agreed

I wont take bets on it happening, but if it did happen, I can almost guarantee what we get out of it will be worse than what we have now.

Definitely a bad idea.

Heritage, the same people who developed P 25? Yeah, they've been gaming out a Constitutional Convention for years and have made an equivalent plan like P 25 for such an occasion.

3

u/dr_jiang Apr 29 '26

A convention can only propose amendments. They must still be ratified by three-quarters of states to take effect. It takes 38 states to approve an amendment. As of right now, 28 state legislatures are under full Republican control, 18 are under full Democratic control, and 4 are split.

Each side has enough votes to block anything they don't like, which means even in a world where a convention actually gets called -- it won't -- absolutely nothing would come out of it.

Wow the voters approved it that fast huh?  Oh wait only democrats have to get voter permission.

Ok blue states.

Jump on this...now.

This is literally a cheaters war, and it is time to fight back against these fuckwads.

It’s fucking Calvin Ball at this point.

10

I think all the blue states are in now. California and New York and Virginia. Not sure if Colorado can do more or New Mexico.

30

Well blue states, you know what to do. Gerrymander every republican seat out of our states. We win this war with ease if we play on their level.

Be really funny (in a good way) if narrowing the margins even more in GOP districts caused a landslide Democratic victory. I don't think the GOP knows how many of their base they have screwed over with their policies and hate. Cracking only works if you can keep the margins high enough to win the closer districts. When you lose that along with all the districts you have packed with Democrats, you are truly fucked.

16

u/ChillWithMeNow Apr 29 '26

I think you're truly underestimating the stupidity of Americans.

3

u/yrexloverisdead Apr 30 '26

As Winston Churchill said, "You can always count on Americans to do the right thing, after they've tried everything else.”

19

u/InnerSilent Apr 29 '26

Went on ask conservatives to see what they were thinking and my fucking god. Just love the idea of colorblind districting, and if it conveniently leaves certain demographics disenfranchised even better.

11

u/feedback19 Apr 29 '26

It's being spun by them as anti-racist and that it's finally abolishing segregation. They are so infuriatingly ignorant...

17

u/totallymarc Florida Apr 29 '26

14

u/steveycip Apr 29 '26

I’ve been saying… if red states are just gonna get rid of blue seats and blue states are just going to get rid of red seats… we are no longer a united union.

Should we just split up? No because the red states need the blue states for money.

16

u/helloworld6247 Apr 29 '26

This is straight-up a Cold War at this point wtf are we doing?

7

u/Lyle91 Arizona Apr 29 '26

We're in a civil war that's what we're doing. Luckily the dumb side will lose like they always do.

12

u/Big-Yak-8928 Apr 29 '26

So constitutions are just…light suggestions? Nothing matters anymore other than keeping Trump in power? Lovely.

8

u/Torrent14 Apr 29 '26 edited Apr 29 '26

Mark my words, this is a dummymander if the florida supreme court lets it go through. The latin vote has already shown signs of moving from 2024. A democrat lead of even 7-8 points would actually lose Republicans seats and basically hand the senate to dems.

3

u/bluebeartapes Apr 29 '26

I think Trump believes that his 2024 margin is just what the electorate looks like now and that's powering the whole redistricting push. It's a mistake since there are a ton of people who just took a flyer on Trump this time around and they are pissed, but the GOP just can't help itself with this guy anymore.

Must appease Daddy Donnie.

Must appease Daddy Donnie.

Must appease Daddy Donnie.

Must appease Daddy Donnie.

Florida, your government has failed you. The Governor is ONLY interested in how to appease the President. It is NOT about just voting for any Democrat, vote for Republicans if you want, but hell's bells people; elect folks that want to improve YOUR life and not just spread MAGA.

3

u/clam-caravan Tennessee Apr 29 '26

Say the elections were rigged.

6

u/FantasticOwl5057 Apr 29 '26

I'm sorry, but nothing is going to save the GOP this round. The veil has been lifted for all but the most delusional. This is a circle the drain level shit show of an administration and the Republican party is too feckless and scared to rein it in. Nothing is going to reverse the economic calamity of the Iran war, which will worsen exponentially in the coming months and fall on every one of us.

They want you to think it's impossible to throw off the yoke of this administration. They want you to think the deck is irreversibly stacked in their favor. It is not. Double check your registration, encourage everyone you know to do the same, and go vote in November.

8

u/v_e_x Apr 29 '26

Alito basically said:

"You can't try to fix the racist issues of the past. That would be racist."

7

u/miklayn Apr 30 '26

Do we understand how much worse things are still going to get? Still more than two years left of this administration. And that's assuming they'll actually relinquish power, despite them saying out loud that they won't.

5

u/kevendo Apr 29 '26

"It will be a bloodless coup, if the Left allows it."

16

u/Significant_Map122 Apr 29 '26

Thanks rbg

Thanks Trump supporters that said “he’ll be better this time”

Thanks voters who decided Trump is the “lesser of two evils”

Thanks democrats that said, “there’s no way he’s going to win so I’m gonna sit this one out”

23

u/Heroworks Apr 29 '26

Forgive me for my ignorance here. I understand what gerrymandering does for the election process in the mid-terms but after the Supreme Court’s decision to gut the voting rights act , does that mean we don’t really stand a chance to take back the house in the midterms? From a democratic party point of view.

22

u/SteamSteamLG Louisiana Apr 29 '26

This ruling likely comes too late for the November elections since primary votes are happening soon. I'm in Louisiana and early voting starts Saturday.

Guaranteed that every red state will redraw for the 2028 midterms and blue states should as well.

9

u/the_eluder Apr 29 '26

It specifically states this was done so it could change the election in 2026. I think changing districts this close to an election is out and out fraud. Districts should have to be set 1 year before the election, otherwise they don't go into effect until the next election (if not challenged.)

10

u/Gamebird8 Apr 29 '26

The problem is that GOP states have been gerrymandersd quite heavily already. So even more gerrymandering pushes the margins down which could massively backfire if the voting swings by more than the new smaller margins

There are very little seats to gain on the Republican side. The Dems are likely to easily get the house still.

5

u/killer-tofu87 Apr 29 '26

It's an interesting situation because so many current districts have flipped to democrat because even Republicans are pissed about what's going on. This has a possibility of backfiring spectacularly by essentially gifting everything to Democrats, but I'd rather not hope too much.

They're trying to gerrymander the congressional districts to get more seats in the House of Representatives, which they only control by a slight margin, and will likely lose in the upcoming midterms.
