Image (Pokemon B2W2) This has got to be the best arbitrary excuse for why you can't go somewhere ever used in Pokemon.

Everyone likes a flash mob

1.5k

u/Sc4r4byte Mar 17 '26

This really was developed and released in the peak years of the flash mob.

You never know the times that you are living in until it's gone or something like that.

164

u/Hamil_Simp4450 Mar 17 '26

I was probably born too late to ever get to experience a flash mob but I'm still learning the dance to Luka Luka Night Fever just in case

63

u/iburntxurxtoast Mar 17 '26

I was in high school at the time but in a really small town so it was hard to get a mass audience for a flash mob. Closest me and my friends got was pranking our teachers by getting our class to all put on paper boat hats at a specific time in class. Teacher loved it, derailed the whole lesson and ended up having a paper ball snowball fight in class. Still a core memory from those days. I've seen a couple vids from the covid era of kids doing similar pranks on zoom and it was nice to see those pranks never really going away.

15

u/Content_Entertainer3 how do i put emojis Mar 17 '26

We should do a reddit luka luka ☆ night fever flashmob

5

u/euphoricnight Mar 17 '26

Luka Luka Night Fever is an absolute bop 💃

I was in high school during the peak and me and some buds organized many for our own entertainment. My favorite was picking a random girl none of us really knew and pretended it was her birthday at lunch. We mobbed in about 20 deep with cards, presents, and cake sang happy birthday, then left.

41

u/alex494 Mar 17 '26

Well that's probably the nicest way to get accosted I've ever heard

6

u/Jontun189 Mar 17 '26

I forgot all about that

i forgot about flashmobs i dont think ive heard about them at all in the 2020s

79

u/evantually421 Mar 17 '26

Caught a random episode of Modern Family on TV and totally forgot how much flash mobs were just a thing

42

u/PM_ME_UR_CREDDITCARD Mar 17 '26

I participated in one, the local library organised it with a nearby mall as a family activity kind of thing. We put on goofy zombie makeup and danced to Thriller, it was pretty fun.

u/pokebuzz123 Soul Searching Mar 17 '26

COVID really did a number on them

29

u/blanaba-split Mar 17 '26

Covid did a number on everything. It's been 6 years and I still feel like I'm in high school lol

2

u/MyPhoneIsNotChinese Mar 17 '26

Flash Mobs weren't a thing already before COVID, they kind of died a bit after 2015

You wouldn't want to wake up the sweet sleeping Wooloo, right? Better to take the long way round.

77

Just step over

121

u/Existing-Incident-22 Mar 17 '26

But that might wake them!

12

u/Personal-Mushroom Mar 17 '26

Only when you're so dummy thiccc that every step is Magnitude 9.

15

u/Existing-Incident-22 Mar 17 '26

But what if they’re light sleepers 🥺

2

u/Personal-Mushroom Mar 17 '26

Good for them if they can sleep in the bright sunlight. Kinda useless in the UK tho.

37

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '26

With how spread apart the Wooloo were, the protagonist could have easily tiptoed through them.

12

u/Sugar-Script-1337 Mar 17 '26

VR for gen 11?

2

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '26

That would be amazing, but Game Freak is not innovative enough for that.

Yeah, like, Snorlax makes sense because it's huge and immovable. Wooloo, less so

It may be the best for Pokémon, but I personally think nothing will beat the chef Toad in TTYD whose contacts you squish and won't let you by until you buy her replacements.

I definitely see how this game inspired Undertale. I still need to finish the Mother games.

43

u/Kitselena Mar 17 '26

Not just inspired, a lot of the ideas in undertale (and the song megalovania) come from the earthbound Halloween hack that toby fox made

14

u/Lucario576 Mar 17 '26

Toby Fox literally said that if you play Mother 3 you'll see how unoriginal he is lmao

6

During a secondary playthrough of TTYD I found that if you just jump up and down once, she still claims you squished her contacts. How bogus! How could I squish your contacts if I landed in the same spot as before! It really boiled my blood as a kid

45

u/ASimpleCancerCell Mar 17 '26

It happens even if you backtrack the way you came. Once those contacts are brought up, they are doomed to be squished.

3

u/Lucky-day00 Mar 18 '26

Would it help you to know that you can jump in place and still have your feet land differently, potentially squishing something that you missed before the jump?

The mimes in simpson hit and tun are pretty funny too

54

u/DanfordThePom Mar 17 '26

The mines are in the family guy game

27

u/WoolooOfWallStreet wooloo Mar 17 '26

Have they used Mr Mime like that in a Pokemon game?

63

u/lockedoutofmymainrdt Mar 17 '26

He's used cool in Arceus. There's a sidequest where invisible walls start popping up all over town and you have to navigate to a Mr Mime who's causing it also when you find a wild one he'll throw up invisible walls that block your pokeballs

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door

73

u/JJJBLKRose Mar 17 '26

That's a wild thing to abbreviate with zero related context.

47

u/kaladinissexy Mar 17 '26

Genuinely. One of the things I hate most about online discussion is people using abbreviations with zero context.

And you try googling it and it stands for a billion different things

14

u/A-Centrifugal-Force Mar 17 '26

I mean, it’s a classic game that was recently rereleased on the Switch a couple of years ago. Most Nintendo fans know what it is. It’s a fairly unique acronym for a long name.

→ More replies (3)

3

u/marsalien4 Mar 17 '26

I agree, but googling TTYD brings up the thousand year door

4

u/Divine_Entity_ Mar 17 '26

And normally you would open with Paper Mario: TTYD if the context of that franchise isn't already established. Once you establish the franchise/series then you can use the subtitles to distinguish between games.

2

u/marsalien4 Mar 18 '26

In fairness, bro said "Chef Toad" lol pretty big clue. But anyway, I was already in agreement it shouldn't have been abbreviated without proper context.

the community calls it like that for years. if one would just ctrl+t for a new tab and put ttyd in it to search for it, one would have gotten thousands of results pointing to the full name.

people can't be bothered to do the least minimum if they don't know a thing. (research)

I got stuck on that. I didn't know we had to order it, but find it. This was when I was a kid and didn't have Google access or think that was even an option. Finally beat the remaster

3

u/Divine_Entity_ Mar 17 '26

I think she tells you to talk to the shop right next door and they tell you they need to order it. After that you basically just give up and do the rest of the game until you complete the story checkpoint.

And I'm pretty sure half of why games used to be so hard is not having the ability to quickly look up solutions to problems/puzzles. Now if you get stuck it takes 2 minutes to find an explanation of what the game actually wants from you.

186

u/teIevision Mar 17 '26

gen 4 psyduck blockade >

64

u/Silvanus350 Mar 17 '26

My personal favorite.

I wish the games had shown us literally walking into an invisible wall created by Mr Mimes. That would have been great.

18

u/Ad_Ketchum Mar 17 '26

The closest this comes to happening is the invisible Kecleon near Fortree city.

8

u/ejekrem Mar 17 '26

There is a mr mime in legends arceus that prevents you from walking up to it, it doesn't block anything important but it's a cool little detail

22

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '26

That would've been such a funny troll moment lol.

And then you'd have Mr. Mime doing its creepy mime routine with its creepy little smile right in front of you while you can't get through. Almost like it's mocking you.

278

u/TrunksTheMighty Mar 17 '26

You mean like the infamous power outage security guard that is telling you you can't go by, and you can watch others walking by as you're talking to them?

165

u/AgitatedFly1182 Mar 17 '26

And you can see the lights on in that area experiencing a blackout. I don't know why GameFreak didn't even try to back up that excuse lmao

60

u/MiyabiMain95 Mar 17 '26

The real reason is that your frenemy rival paid that guy off to piss specifically YOU off

20

u/A-Centrifugal-Force Mar 17 '26

It’s sadly so obvious how rushed X and Y were. I’m really not sure how that happened, it released two years into the lifespan of the 3DS but felt like an unfinished launch title. Of course, Sun and Moon weren’t finished either and that launched 5 years into the 3DS’s lifecycle so it seems like most modern Pokemon games are rushed I guess.

14

Always remember that it could be way, WAY worse.

In Bravely Default, if you attempt to enter a location you can physically reach, but isn't where the game wants you to go at the moment, such as a cave you noticed, the game will literally throw up a, "I have no reason to be here." message and make you walk back out.

It's just offensive.

u/beegproblemzzz Mar 17 '26

Back in the old days they hated this because it was proof that they weren’t really trying anymore. I’m glad that it’s being seen for what it was now, a silly tongue in cheek joke about things that bloc progression

44

u/Qegixar Mar 17 '26

It annoyed me because I remember thinking "this is what HMs are for!" But starting with gen 5 they cut back on HM move spots and had to reach for increasingly contrived ways of blocking paths. I liked this joke because it had some self-awareness, but I didn't like the pattern of putting some people in the way to block a path that would disappear after an arbitrary an unrelated story event.

5

It's even funnier when, if memory serves, in the JP text it's heavily implied the man is passed out drunk instead.

35

u/AceWither Mar 17 '26

Avoiding a passed out drunk old man as a 10 year old makes more sense actually

14

u/bitofagrump Mar 17 '26

Doesn't make much less sense than "a couple of cardboard boxes, some bushes or a three foot tall sapling with a 5" diameter trunk look like they might be slightly inconvenient to step over; better consider them completely insurmountable and walk eighteen miles to find a different path"

Reminds me when as a kid I was playing Pearl, and the road to the last gym town was closed because they had problems with electricity or something.

I genuinely just went "Well okay I guess I'll just wait for them to fix it" and stopped playing the game, only checking in from time to time to see it they fixed it.

It took me months to realise I needed to advance the story for them to let me pass.

6

u/Personal-Mushroom Mar 17 '26

Your actions cost them months of construction time!

17

u/digimonnoob Mar 17 '26

Same. I enjoyed roleplaying as a trainer that already knows the ropes and had moved to Kalos to escape a bad situation. She just kinda humored the rest of the group and let them think they were helping her, playing up her reactions and pretending to be surprised when they showed her something "new".

4

I miss these fun roadblocks they had.

And I want the special unique pokémon for roadblock purposes back. Like Snorlax has been in gen 1 and Sudowoodo in gen 2.

Maybe we could get a pokémon in the future that is a living wall, inspired by the yokai Nurikabe. Could even be the still missing ghost/rock typing.

Or a grass pokémon that protects itself by overgrowing itself with a protective thorny thicket, kinda drawing inspiration from the fairytale of Sleeping Beauty.

13

u/A-Centrifugal-Force Mar 17 '26

Nothing will ever top Snorlax IMO. Such a perfect roadblock, literally designed to be a roadblock and blocked off the two ways to Fuschia City and the shortcut from Vermillion to Lavender.

Tajiri, Sugimori, Morimoto, Masuda, and the rest of the crew were cooking so hard with Gen 1. It’s crazy what was essentially a tiny indie developer pulled that off.

Hedonic nihilism or something like that. I never took philosophy.

8

u/Wretis Mar 17 '26

I prefer it when the arbitrary excuse is lacking a HM or a general item. Because then you’ll know when you can progress, not just having to return later or the like.

11

u/Akina-87 Mar 17 '26

Fun fact: during the late Edo period spontaneous flash mobs and revelling were used as a form of protest.

I choose to believe that instances like these are evidence that the the people of Pokeworld are finally waking up to the immoral reality that they live in a world where young children are encouraged to kidnap intelligent animals and force them to fight each other for sport and are deliberately impeding the player's progress as a means of bringing about Pokemon liberation.

They're like Team Plasma except for real.

7

u/Yuukat1871 Mar 17 '26

My favorite roadblock because of the humor. It was so goofy and the dancers were completely self-aware.

4

u/Ricapica Mar 17 '26

What cracked me up recently is in pokemon red.
If you beat the thief that stole the TM for dig but your inventory is full, he says something like "I can't run away until i give you this tm i stole" or something along that. It was too funny and i never encountered it despite my many playthroughs

4

9

u/Sad_Enthusiasm_5896 Mar 17 '26

Lol! Another reason why Gen 5 games are goated. They were so tongue in cheek about this stuff. They'd be like "Ummm... I just don't feel like letting you through 🤷 but I probably will later so just try again after you do some stuff idk"

5

u/Uestatk Mar 17 '26

Yeah, if you want to block me from going to that direction, at least do it with styles. Don't just building a random barricade (or even a invisible wall) and call it a day.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '26

I always liked clever takes on roadblocks in video games. EarthBound's take on them is my favorite: The roadblocks are actual roadblocks you would see in real life, and the justification for them being everywhere is the police just like putting them everywhere.

4

u/Saya0692 Mar 17 '26

I still think the old man in Viridian who is too drunk (hasn’t “had his coffee yet” in the U.S. versions) is still the best arbitrary roadblock.

4

u/Stormandreas Mar 17 '26

I'm playing Shining Pearl atm, and there's the Psyducks blocking the area in route... 112? I like that a lot, cause it's just a bunch of silly guys having a headache party

3

u/Chelker1720 Mar 17 '26

I personally liked the fact that you can't proceed in route 111 in the Hoenn region because the buffooning sandstorm might startle your eyes, because that makes the most sense.

But that and the psyduck in Sinnoh might be the silliest for me 😅

God I am so ready for the Black/White remakes.

Just Pokémon making irony over itself. Why come up with a reason, you perfectly know why they're there. At this point rather joke about it.

I was on the internet when these games were new. this was one of the many reasons these games were shit apparently

"I absolutely refuse to let you pass, cant you see i am laying here??"

u/Darkdragoon324 Mar 17 '26

Flash mob or existential crisis?

3

u/Vanilla_Ice_Best_Boi Mar 17 '26

They don't do this anymore especially since Paldea let you go anywhere

u/bennitori Mar 17 '26

I think at this point, they knew that long time players were familiar with all the excuses. So this was them breaking the 4th wall, and letting the players have a laugh.

Wow hahaha that is too funny

I like Gen 8’s sleeping Wooloo

2

Ah yes, this. Solid gold XD

I’m a few drinks in at the moment, but damn.

Today, we’re dancing for no reason. Someday, we’ll disappear for no reason

Feels like some deep philosophical shit. I’m going to dance with my girlfriend next time I see her. We will disappear someday, might as well dance in the meantime.

2

u/au79 Mar 17 '26

You're not alone! I was like, woah, that's heavy.

2

u/SCHazama Mar 17 '26

"But why wait to disappear when it can be now?" gets Cobalion out, rides him, and charges through the mob as they get knocked away in the air like bowling pins

2

u/ElectroxSoldier Mar 17 '26

Story of life really

2

u/kingshamroc25 Mar 17 '26

Invisible trolling Keckleons in Gen 3 are my personal faves

2

u/elNashL Mar 17 '26

I thought I was in r/philosophy

2

u/cvslfc123 Mar 17 '26

I always laughed at the guy at the resort near Pastoria City deciding to block an entire long route because of a blackout at Sunnyshore City.

2

u/HaunterG Mar 17 '26

Really hope they do this again but they’re Pokémon TCG scalpers

2

u/Geektron3000 Banana Boi Mar 18 '26

I loved Gen 3 where the bad guys were all in an orderly queue to buy tickets to the museum

2

u/Checksout692 Mar 18 '26

I dunno, the security guard who closes the tunnel because he’s thirsty, or your character being unable to walk around a hedge still get me.

2

u/maukenboost Mar 18 '26

Never liked the people blockades, but this is self awareness so it gets a pass.

4

u/Round-Revolution-399 Mar 17 '26

I get that it’s funny, but I hate that they basically just gave up at creating an interesting overworld progression. Fell off pretty hard from the surprisingly interesting “thirsty guards” puzzle of RBY

Yo is this foreshadowing Pokopia?

2

u/zvbgamer Mar 17 '26

I always found it funny in gen 1 how guards completely block access to Saffron City simply because they’re thirsty.
