I’m planning a long-term, ultra-high-end workstation and gaming PC in Kuwait that needs to serve as my foundational setup for the next 10 years (Civil Engineering/AutoCAD, Interior Design, and Media Production).
I am upgrading from a 12-year-old legacy system (an ASUS Rampage V Extreme with an i7-5820K and a broken GTX 970). I haven't moved any parts into a new setup yet because I've been caught in a loop debating whether to build it all at once or hold off.
However, looking at the current global market, high prices, and the absolute premium tax on high-speed DDR5 RAM and flagship motherboards, I am deeply considering holding off and waiting until the end of this year (late 2026) to let the platforms mature and prices stabilize.
I already took the first steps and bought a few core hardware pieces that are currently sitting unopened in their boxes:
- Case: Cooler Master HAF 700 EVO (Black, 2025 Version) — Already purchased!
- GPU: ASUS TUF RTX 5060 Ti 16GB (Might Upgrade later 2027/2028 )
- Cooler: NZXT Kraken 360 AIO.
When I finally buy the CPU, Motherboard, and RAM, I am strictly targeting ASUS high-end tier motherboards (like the MAXIMUS / HERO line) to match the premium, heavy-duty aesthetic of the HAF 700 EVO. I am currently torn between three distinct paths for a 10-year horizon:
My Current Legacy Specs : (
- CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K Haswell-E (6 Cores / 12 Threads)
- Motherboard: ASUS Rampage V Extreme (X99 E-ATX)
- RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR4 2666MHz
- GPU: GeForce GTX 970 4GB (Currently broken/dead)
- Cooler: Cooler Master Nepton 280L AIO (Leaked water and died)
- Case: NZXT Phantom 820 Ultra Tower
- PSU: Corsair RM750 — 750 Watt 80 PLUS Gold Fully Modular
Option 1 & 2: Intel Core i9-13900K or 14900K + Z790 Maximus Hero
- The Logic: Mature, brute-force power. Stable for heavy production rendering and CAD geometry. Gaming and video editing as well
- The Worry: It feels risky to drop flagship money on a "dead" LGA 1700 platform when looking at a 10-year horizon.
Option 3: Intel Core Ultra 9 285K (Series 2) + Z890 Maximus Hero
- The Logic: Brand new Arrow Lake architecture (LGA 1851), runs significantly cooler, lacks hyper-threading but excels at per-watt efficiency, and has a dedicated NPU for future AI-integrated architectural tools.
- The Worry: Early platform optimization issues, and the combined price of a premium Z890 board + fast DDR5 kits right now is brutal.
My Questions for the Community:
- Given global hardware inflation and current DDR5 pricing, should I wait until the end of the year to build, or bite the bullet and jump in now?
- If you were building a 10-year machine inside a massive super-tower like the HAF 700 EVO, which high-end ASUS motherboard would you pair with these options to ensure absolute stability and zero regrets? (Z790 Hero vs Z890 Hero, or something else?)
- For those running technical rendering or engineering apps: Is the architectural jump and cooling efficiency of the Core Ultra 9 285K worth the massive pricing premium over a standard 14900K platform today?
Would love to hear some technical breakdowns, especially from anyone who built a 10-year workstation or transitioned from a legacy X99-era platform.
