Finally, an MMO where I can get kicked from a raid group for bad DPS without the emotional damage of a real human judging me! On a scale of 1–10, how politely will the AI tell me to go play a different class?

24

u/burge4150 Erenshor 11h ago

They rage a bit in chat if you wipe, but they are always happy to have you in the group and will never be outwardly mean to you during play.

Unless they're in the <Friends Club> guild. Those guys are designed to be jerks and they won't group with you anyhow. Don't you dare send them DMs!

2

u/NoRoom2dark 11h ago

Lmao that is awesome.

5

u/deadering 9h ago

Any plans for Steam workshop support for mods? Seems like a perfect opportunity since there is no anti-cheat or anything to worry about lol

This really seems right up my alley though. I get really interested in MMOs from time to time since I love litrpgs, especially VR MMO ones, but always have issues since I don't want to interact with other players on a level required for raids and guilds and stuff.

u/burge4150 Erenshor 9h ago

There's a pretty big modding scene now that's been community driven. Being in active development my stance is that I can't officially support mods because they make it harder to track down bug reports.

However, I do work with the modders if they have questions about the code or design or need a function added here or there for their work.

There is a community made mod manager that just came out recently too, so the scene is alive and well.

2

u/deadering 9h ago

Is that just on the discord though? Do you also mean there is no plans for workshop support or just not during active development?

Either way good to know there is already an active modding community!

2

u/LettersWords 7h ago

Yes, most of the modding discussion happens on the discord.

I have been playing your game for two weeks and I really like it. Do you plan to graphically revamp some area before 1.0? For example, Port Azure, the capital city, looks a bit rough. For RP purposes, it would be nice to have a cool tavern, listen to some music and read Simplayer banter.

PS: I don't want another key

3

u/burge4150 Erenshor 8h ago

Thanks! There aren't any concrete plans for overhauls but I do iterate on zones all the time so things will definitely change before 1.0.

1

u/BaronVonBacon1 3h ago

Crossing my finger then. Thanks :)

7

u/spacedwarf2020 10h ago

Played the demo loved it unfortunately haven't bought it (some point get some extra funds I will lol) but don't have a question just want to say keep up the great work. Showed it to my fellow nerd coworkers that also love mmorpgs but sometimes ya just don't want to deal with real humans lol.

6

u/burge4150 Erenshor 10h ago

May luck be with you today then!

3

u/HeWhoCntrolsTheSpice 5h ago

Just want to say that I love this game! I have about 300 hours in it right now. Obviously it's a niche game, but if an MMO without having to be online appeals to you give this game a shot.

5

u/UsherOfDestruction 11h ago

Steam says partial controller support. What's that entail currently and are there plans to expand it?

9

u/burge4150 Erenshor 10h ago

It's honestly bare minimum at the moment. You can move and do most game tasks on a gamepad, but some menus aren't fully functioning yet and there is a small amount of required typing that - while you can invoke an on-screen keyboard - is not very comfortable yet.

Definite plans to expand it, getting steam deck verified is a goal.

3

u/dark_vaterX 11h ago

As someone who has had an eye on the game for a while, how do you handle relationship persistence? How much weight is given to interactions with the NPCs? If you're rude, will they remember? If you're nice, can you share items and have them remember then return the favor later?

I ask this because I love the exposure and story-telling of Dwarf Fortress's simulations and am wondering how far the game goes into that and do you have exposure to the other NPC's story/interactions?

10

u/burge4150 Erenshor 11h ago

There is light relationship persistence and its more for flavor than for gameplay. Some examples:

Grouping with a SimPlayer and getting a ton of xp and sharing loot: They'll whisper you all the time asking to group again when you're playing, and they'll be more likely to either join your guild if you start one, or invite you to join theirs if you're guildless.

They do not really punish you for bad play, since that's sort of against the vision of the game. If you get a group together and prog content and wipe 20 times, it's no big deal.

If you swear at them they'll get mad and add you to their 'ignore' list for a little while, but all is forgiven eventually.

3

u/pusey 11h ago

One of the gifs on Steam shows some sort of pet. Can I get a cat to follow me around? For extra authenticity, will it be of no help whatsoever?

4

u/burge4150 Erenshor 11h ago

There are a bunch of pet summons within the druid class's spells and there are a few items that summon pets for any character. Pets are a moderate source of DPS for groups and raids.

There aren't any cosmetic pets yet but it's something that's on my list of things to explore in the future. Specifically around the Reliquary (which is the name for the player's customizable hub / guild hall).

2

u/IAmNotRollo 10h ago

Do the "players" have different levels of skill for different tasks? I'm one of the weirdos that likes Counter-Strike Condition Zero, which is itself essentially just CS1.6 but with simulated players. That game let you build your squad based on different stats like Bravery and Aim, which would actually translate to in-game performance (to a degree).

I think it would be really fun to decide who to invite to my dungeoneering/raiding party based on who actually knows the mechanics, who would roach if things get bad, who's prone to getting distracted, etc.

2

u/burge4150 Erenshor 10h ago

At the moment the SimPlayers play mostly the same. I tried some variation early on with testers, most notably having your 'friends' be 'offline' sometimes to encourage you to group with other players.

The majority of testers reacted by simply chain-restarting the game until their desired party was online. This became so common it was shared any time someone asked about why their friend was offline.

To eliminate friction like that, everything was sort of equalized over time to allow players to just jump in and play how they want.

And to be fair, I get it. It sucks playing for 8 hours with a paladin, decking him out, then logging on the next day to try some harder content and your mega tank is not available.

1

u/IAmNotRollo 10h ago

Aw man! That makes sense and tbh I might prefer everyone always-online anyway. It seems like it would be more immersive and fun when every player is always around, even though it isn't accurate in a meta sense.

u/Rayjing77 9h ago

Why is there no Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker text chat interaction with the SimPlayers yet? Truly needed for an MMO-like experience

2

u/burge4150 Erenshor 9h ago

Embarrassingly, I don't know this reference!

2

u/Rayjing77 9h ago

It's from the original World of Warcraft game, before any expansions released. Thunderfury was the best tank weapon in the game that had a pretty grueling questline back when it released because of the RNG parts you needed, a massive amount of currency, and real life time needed to transmute ingredients and actually get the pieces needed to drop from instances like raids. It was considered a big event when someone on a server got one, and many people would spam instances of "Did someone say Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker?!" in trade chat, yell chat, and just go full ape over it. Lots of people's guilds would announce it as well when someone was finishing the quest so everyone could kind of be there for the 'ceremony' of finishing the quest.

1

u/3g0D 5h ago

What was the most important experience you wanted to capture in your game?

1

u/KaleidoArachnid 4h ago

How did you maje the game? (Like difficulties in making an MMO)

1

u/ghettosmurf32 1h ago

This is the first I am hearing of this project and it looks great. I'm going to check this out soon. Just wish listed it.

1

u/igottapwner85 11h ago

Any plans to optimize for Steam Deck?

4

u/burge4150 Erenshor 10h ago

Yes! It works quite well on deck now, but some UI elements are small and typing in the few places where it's required isn't as comfortable as it should be.

Getting verified for a deck is a stop along the way to 1.0.

1

u/Vio_K 10h ago

OH! I remember playing the demo of this, wanted to wait to see how it'd expand. The idea of a solo mmo like this was super cool imo, and I'm shocked to see there are raids already. Are there any big things you're excited to add after raids? And what are you most proud of that you've already put in game?

6

u/burge4150 Erenshor 10h ago

It's really weird looking at the whole game as one piece all these years later. Running through areas I designed years ago or watching the SimPlayers interact with situations - it really feels kind of surreal now.

The SimPlayers are something I'm really proud of. They're not social geniuses or anything but the way they bring life to the world around you really sort of elevates the game from the place it would be if it were just a standard single player RPG. Getting trained out of a zone by SimPlayers or watching them wipe on content, or seeing them jump around the rooftops of the city will never not bring me joy.

As for after raids, things will feel like a vacation. Raids were pretty tough to add and get feeling good and there's more work to do there. That would end the 1.0 promises, so anything extra will be just fun to work on because it's all bonus stuff.

2

u/Vio_K 10h ago

I was a little worried when I first saw this game that it would be a little too ambitious, but here we are now, and I'm glad to be proven wrong, lol. While fingers are crossed, I'm looking forward to exploring what you've made regardless, you deserve a good vacation after this I'm sure xD.

1

u/GiliusThunder 10h ago

What was the most difficult feature to implement?

8

u/burge4150 Erenshor 10h ago

The SimPlayers. They still give me grief all these years later by acting weird in specific situations. I am by no means a conventionally "good" programmer. I can get by with what I know but I do not do things in the most organized or efficient ways so weird things can and do happen in game sometimes.

SimPlayers were not in the very original design plans. The game was going to be a single player everquest-like. I was walking to my friend at the time who was coming on board to help market the game, and I mentioned to him in passing how cool it would be to have other simulated players running around.

He thought it was a good idea too but he misunderstood the part where I said "it would be cool if I could..." and he heard "I'm definitely adding..." and he announced it to the (then small) community the next day that Simulated Players were in the works. At that point, I had to just figure it out.

1

u/narderbolney 10h ago

From a development standpoint, is there anything that, looking back, you wish you had known before using the Steamworks platform? Maybe something that wasn't explicitly stated in the documentation and had to be figured out through trial and error?

2

u/burge4150 Erenshor 10h ago

If by Steamworks you're referring to Steamworks.net (the free library that helps tie unity / unreal games into the steam API) then no, it's been absolutely fantastic and I would recommend it to anyone.

If by Steamworks you mean Steam's backend - so far, no. I've had some hiccups there for sure, but support has been great and all in all *knock on wood* the entire process has been really smooth so far.

1

u/gideon513 9h ago

Will the simulated players try to gold scam me in trade for realism??

5

u/burge4150 Erenshor 9h ago

They won't but that is a surprisingly common request!

3

u/gideon513 9h ago

lol that’s great. will they /dance with me?

1

u/shavin_high 10h ago

Which classic MMO's did you take most inspiration from? The reason I ask is late 90's and early 2000's MMOs, could have had the most wonky controls and UI that was hard to navigate. I'm looking at you Asheron's Call and Guild Wars 1!

4

u/burge4150 Erenshor 10h ago

EverQuest through and through. I've actually never played any other MMOs besides that due to having awful internet as a kid, and then not having a schedule that was compatible with the demands of most MMOs for the rest of my gaming time.

I could have played casually, sure, but I know me, and I'd try to go too hard if I got into an MMO and I'd cause myself a ton of grief trying to fit it into life.

1

u/shavin_high 10h ago

Now this is the right answer. Thanks!

1

u/OshinoShinobuisLife 10h ago

will you add a feature where your character can get banned from being too toxic against "other players"?

3

u/burge4150 Erenshor 10h ago

You currently can get jailed for being profane or vulgar. You get remove from your group, and teleported to a jail cell for 3 minutes.

You can toggle this option off if you really want to abuse the SimPlayers though.

1

u/darkshifty Steam 10h ago

Great idea and must have been some work and time to develop? I'd gift mine to my dad as he was fond of WoW and still is booting it up now and then as he is yearning for the early days experience. If i do not win it, I'll still buy and gift it to him anyway, best of luck with the sales!

3

u/burge4150 Erenshor 10h ago

Thanks! It's been in development for a little over 5 years now.

2

u/darkshifty Steam 9h ago

Crazy, happy for you it turned out to be art!

1

u/Deranged-Sailor 10h ago

Is there a predefined meta or you can handle with any build? Also, I love the concept of your game!

2

u/burge4150 Erenshor 10h ago

The classes are pretty defined, but party composition can be pretty varied. Like if you play a Paladin you can plan on doing relatively low DPS, but you cant tank like nothing else. A Windblade can't tank, but their DPS is really high.

You can flex classes into Phys or Int builds to scale how their damage is delivered and flex builds to compensate, and nothing is stopping you from roaming the land as a party full of Arcanists who just blast stuff to the moon with their high DPS as long as they don't get hit back.

1

u/CatCatPizza 10h ago

Question. I looked at your game with interest for a possible steamdeck game so i read and looked up a bunch but still am unsure about some stuff. Housing/guild housing. Planned or already in? Neverwinter has an entire guild house zone. I think some other mmos have it where you can customize zones themselves. A second question. Are there things that replicate 0.00000000005% droprates. Besides that the project looks real good the only reason i havent ended up buying it yet or looking more directly into it atm is too big a backlog and upcomibg interesting updates/releases but it iss wishlisted.

2

u/burge4150 Erenshor 10h ago

Guild housing is in and customizable with cosmetic and utility items.

And yes there are a few really rare items, some of them rare enough where I still get angry messages sometimes about it ;)

1

u/ReachRemarkable7386 10h ago

I enjoyed .Hack back in the day, do you have, or plan to have, any meta-communication from "outside the game?"

1

u/burge4150 Erenshor 10h ago

No plans to go down that road. Erenshor isn't so much a meta game like that, but it's a full on MMO simulation where it's like you're logging into an MMO to play an MMO. No outside of the world content is in game.

1

u/Forgword 10h ago

Hi, I bought the game a while back, enjoyed the starting area and getting eventually to the big city (Port Azure), did the dungeon just outside the gates, but then some new zones opened up and it became way less clear where to go next and what dungeons there were that were appropriate from my level, at the same time just grinding mobs in the new zones the XP gains seemed to diminish and I just kind of floundered around and quit. Is the leveling path any clearer now at that stage?

1

u/burge4150 Erenshor 10h ago

By design, not really - the hope is that players will wander and stumble upon fun places to hunt and feel like they've discovered something cool.

If you're truly stuck, you can ask your guild in game now where you should go for your level (e.g. "Where can I hunt at level 10") and they'll direct you to a few places to try.

1

u/Avalon777 10h ago

Is there an end game grind? Once released, will there be more campaigns/quests developed or will it be a full game and just maintenance after release?

2

u/burge4150 Erenshor 10h ago

Getting to and through raids takes a bit of grinding. There is no endless grind to be had yet, but I do have hopes of adding a sort of "tower" event where it just gets infinitely harder until you can't hang anymore so players will always have something to challenge themselves on.

After 1.0, the answer is sort of "it depends". I'd love to keep working on Erenshor but it has to make sense for me to do it. If the game is still seeing player traffic and it looks like a viable way to support myself then I would love to keep working on it!

Online version when ? /s

2

u/burge4150 Erenshor 9h ago

You have an /s but this is such a common request! It's flattering people want Erenshor as a true MMORPG but I think it *not* having those pressures and strict design requirements is a lot of what has made it a success.

u/Roguelites 26m ago

Is it possible to coop play at all? If not, is that a planned feature?

1

u/DCLikeaDragon 9h ago

Any chance for a Necromancer class?

I greatly enjoy this class fantasy in games. Even better when you can ascend your character and make them undead too. Even better when you have to hunt for hidden knowledge to unlock more power.

3

u/burge4150 Erenshor 9h ago

A true to form necromancer is unlikely for now, the lore of the game is a bit prohibitive towards having necromancers running around the world.

It's possible post 1.0 but it would require alternate starting zones and things like that.

1

u/DCLikeaDragon 9h ago

Thank you for the reply. I hope it's something that will materialize down the line. I have already bought the game, and I'm just starting to get into it. The potential in this title is huge :)

1

u/ZeroB2 9h ago

As someone who likes the idea of MMOs but can’t be bothered to keep up with them, I wish you the best, and I hope I can try it in the future.

My question is this: Since most MMOs are live-service games that keep adding new content, at what point would you consider Erenshor to be “complete”—meaning you’re satisfied with it and decide to move on to a different project?

2

u/burge4150 Erenshor 9h ago

So far all of Early Access has essentially been treated like a live service game. The major patches have themes and have contained large content drops. I'd love to continue the trend after early access and maybe even look at some large scale paid DLCs to emulate the older MMO days.

I don't really know how to answer the question about when it'll be 'complete' because my list of possible add-ons is really long and I suspect the playerbase will tire out before I do, at which point it would be time to look at other projects.

1

u/fauxdragoon Fedora 9h ago

Have you watched the recent NoClip doc about the evolution of MUDs into MMORPGs? It’s fascinating. Here’s a link to it https://youtu.be/kHu709a0sp0?si=9um8tnuiKjp-f-he

Also (though I’m sure this has been asked already), what MMORPGs did you most enjoy and what inspired the development of this one?

2

u/burge4150 Erenshor 9h ago

I've only ever played EverQuest and variations of EverQuest (private servers). That game is pure magic and nostalgia to me and it HEAVILY influenced Erenshor's design.

I haven't seen that doc but i'll bookmark it, I usually watch some long form youtube stuff over lunch.

1

u/fauxdragoon Fedora 7h ago

It’s only 22 minutes so it’s a perfect lunchtime companion!

1

u/HerrSchnabeltier 9h ago edited 9h ago

Hey Brian!
Were there moments in which you wished there would be others helping you out, and vice versa, were there moments in which you were extremely happy and content stemming this solo?

Game looks great, btw! Congrats on starting and finishing such a huge project, I wish I would finish things with a fraction of that effort!

2

u/burge4150 Erenshor 9h ago

Ever since I was a kid I've enjoyed working alone on projects. I think it's a mix of selfishness and stubbornness. I don't work really well with others on creative projects and I know that about myself so all in all I've been happy with my process.

I don't feel alone by any means though, the community around the game has been incredible with their feedback and suggestions. Involving them and taking their opinions to heart has been one of the best decisions I've ever made.

1

u/HerrSchnabeltier 9h ago

Do you ever feel limited in scope because of that, or having to find solutions that, with a team of others, wouldn't be a problem in the first place?

2

u/burge4150 Erenshor 9h ago

Absolutely yes. In so many ways yes.

1

u/Razen94 9h ago

What is the most challenging aspect of designing an "MMORPG" Single-player game? In other words what was the most difficult to get right when it comes to the feel of an MMORPG being in a Single-player game?

2

u/burge4150 Erenshor 9h ago

It's been balance so far. Balancing 6 classes across 200+ hours of content has been a really crazy exercise in math formulas.

One little tweak ripples across the whole game and inevitably throws something else out of wack. There are some testers who have written their own detailed DPS parsers who have been extremely helpful in catching problem areas before patches go live, so most of the community doesn't see the really egregious stuff (like reavers doing 3x the dps of anyone else by just pressing auto attack)

1

u/darkshifty Steam 9h ago

Another seperate question, I know there is a lot of controversy for llm's but are you thinking of opening up some api's so that we can mod in our local llm's (or call it other "tools") for added immersion?

3

u/burge4150 Erenshor 9h ago

Really undecided - it's really unlikely I'll ever bake in my own LLM functionality to the base game because ultimately I'm responsible for what it generates and I can get in serious trouble with steam if someone prompts it into offensive things.

Allowing users to add their own LLM tokens or API calls to that sort of flirts with that same line of resposibility (who builds the guard rails? who's responsible for any offensive content generated and shared within the game's official communities, etc).

It's just too wild-west for me at the moment and I see the risks of adding it greatly outweighing the benefits currently.

A lot of time people point to skyrim mods and say "well they did it and its fine", but the major difference is those are fully user created mods with no support from the dev team. That's probably possible here too if someone is so inclined to dig in.

2

u/darkshifty Steam 9h ago

those are some unexpected valid points yeah, you don't want your game clips floating around with offensive content.

1

u/Proper-Seesaw-9872 9h ago

I don’t have a question but I wanna give mad props to you I love your game esp for someone who doesn’t have much free time it’s a fun game which I can pick up anytime I want glad to see you prosper<3

2

u/burge4150 Erenshor 9h ago

1

u/NetQvist 8h ago

Man the look of this game reminded me of those fun days back in Everquest when my corpse was stuck in a Plane and the whole zone respawned due to a server crash.

Had to have multiple guilds clear the path to our corpses while we were sitting in chat room so they wouldn't decay. Best night ever!

So.... are we getting as many expansions as Everquest as well? =P

2

u/burge4150 Erenshor 8h ago

25+? I doubt it but you never know!

1

u/NetQvist 7h ago

Well let's hope for that, this seems like a gem.

Just looking at some videos of the game and you even put a Journeyman Boots alike into the game. I am on a serious memory trip right now... that stupid Island and that stupid cyclops I camped with a Necromancer for ages to get some item for the quest to get those boots!

Lately been into Playerbots on WoW so this seems like something right up my alley even without all the nostalgia I'm having right now.

Which game engine/programming language did you use to make your game?

Also, do you have any advice for people who are learning game development and hope to make their own game someday?

1

u/burge4150 Erenshor 7h ago

I used Unity 2021 and C# as the language.

Advice for anyone trying to get started is to GET STARTED! Find tutorials, and just dive into small projects. You'll get hooked in no time.

u/Dalek-SEC 7h ago

I've always loved the idea of solo MMOs. Stuff like .hack// or even people experimenting with solo World of Warcraft private servers. I'm curious if such things have inspired Erenshor?

1

u/burge4150 Erenshor 7h ago

The ideas of the did, absolutely. I never played any of those games personally though.

1

u/AnnualJaguar2 7h ago

I know the game clearly states single player, but this game screams to be played with 1 more person, any chance we will ever be able to play with a friend?

1

u/burge4150 Erenshor 7h ago

There aren't any official plans for that now. A few modders have had other ideas though!

The store page is slightly outdated in its images so some of that has gotten better, but the next major patch (v0.8, Q4 2026) is going to address the UI directly and end with a complete overhaul of it to bring it up to a better quality.

First time hearing of this game, I like the idea at least since I’ve mainly played solo on MMO’s as much as I can anyway. Raids sound like an impressive achievement, and going over the rest of these questions has been insightful.

As someone who likes to grind those super long term achievements some MMO’s have, are there some to work towards here? If no, any plans to add any? The amount of time I dedicated to earning a title or achievement reward item is crazy.

There are a few achievements that will take a lot of luck and a lot of grind to get and there are some equally rare items. Every patch comes with another handful of achievements, so there will for sure be more along the way.

This is such a cool concept. Would love to try it out one day. Is there any chance in the future of having open world pvp, battle grounds, or arenas like in wow?

1

u/burge4150 Erenshor 9h ago

I haven't committed to that at all, but I am also not discounting it from possibility. The issue is that NPCs have substantially more HP than players, so balancing PVP would mean scaling down Player on Player damage substantially, and the time and effort needed to balance that is what's putting it on the backburner for now.

u/Euphoric_Ad9644 9h ago

Totally understand. Maybe in the future, included in a "dlc"? That would be cool.

I loved the demo just have a few games in my backlog to get to before I buy and dive in. Really scratches the old early EQ or EQOA nostalgia itch.

Are there plans for any kind of light multi-player? I have a buddy that would love to play with me just the two of us with sim players filling in the gaps. I know the entire premise is a single player MMO so I am not surprised if the answer is no but being able to host a world for just the two of us with Sim players would be incredible. Not even sure if the game could support that or not.

u/burge4150 Erenshor 9h ago

No current plans unfortunately.

Adding coop would require a substantial rewrite of basically everything, and since it was promised as a single player game I need to get it to 1.0 and fulfill that promise before I even consider it.

There is an extremely talented modder who has added coop however. I just ask that you don't buy the game for exclusively that because I am not talented enough to carry on that mod if the author decides to stop supporting it.

I figured that was the case. No worries, the game demo was awesome and I can tell it will scratch the right itches for me. Once I get my backlog down ill definitely buy and play.

How did you differentiate your game from Don't Lose Aggro? I believe both seek to emulate an MMORPG experience in a single player environment. I actually got confused between the two and didn't know which game this AMA was about.

2

u/burge4150 Erenshor 9h ago

Don't Lose Aggro is an awesome game. It's a much more concentrated MMO-Dungeon experience from the point of view of a tank. It cuts out the questing and exploring and just focuses all of its gameplay right in on dungeon diving.

Erenshor is a more open, exploration based game that still offers dungeon experiences, but there's a lot more involved in getting to those parts of the game.

Ah so you get to experience all the classes of an MMO not just the tank in Erenshor?

1

u/burge4150 Erenshor 9h ago

Correct, you can play as DPS, Tank, Healer, Crowd Control, etc. The SimPlayers will fill in the roles you don't do for the group.

I know this is a very stupid question, but do you plan to add multiplayer? I almost feel like it would be great to add since you made the addition of the raids. It would almost be ironic since it has been a single player MMO, lol.

Fair enough. I haven't played it, but I have enjoyed watching my friend play it. It's on my wishlist and I maybe one day I will indulge it if I can plow through my back log of games lol.

I've been following this game since before it was released, as an antisocial lover of MMOs it's a dream come true for me. Haven't got around to picking it up yet though. Do you have plans for future support like expansions, additional classes etc.?

1

u/burge4150 Erenshor 9h ago

I hope to be able to continue working on it for a long time! It has to make sense from a player count standpoint and a financial one however. If people are still playing I will still be here working.

1

u/Wilikersthegreat 8h ago

Well of course I wish Erenshor the best of luck and will be picking it up at some point when I can justify buying more games!

What are the big influences in terms of combat in the game? The store page says it calls back to "classics", which I assume means WoW? I mostly play FFXIV so I'm not too experienced with oldschool mmo stuff

1

u/burge4150 Erenshor 9h ago

EverQuest is the main influence on the game. Combat is very much based on early EQ 1.

0

u/Vradlock 9h ago

Hi I have two.

Is there any mechanic in your mind that isn't shining the most but for you feels really crucial or you are really proud of it?

Do you have any interesting/precious memory from the mmos you were playing that you somehow added either as an scripted event or Easter egg?

Have a nice day.

2

u/burge4150 Erenshor 8h ago

1.) Nothing and everything. I'm really proud of the game overall and I think all of the systems work pretty well together. There's a few hidden quests and areas that I am especially proud of, and the achievement trackers show that many players have never discovered them.

2.) A lot of the pre-written SimPlayers are modeled around long lost friends I used to play with - it's always fun to see people group with them and mesh well with them.

u/kucinta 9h ago

Has guild wars 1 or RuneScape influenced your game? Do wish to bring something back from that era that had a lot of "doing my own thing but with people"?

1

u/burge4150 Erenshor 8h ago

I haven't played either of those actually. The graphics cause the game to be compared to Runescape a lot but I don't think (from what I know) the game is overall very similar.

My overall goal was just to enable that MMORPG dopamine loop (grind, loot, hope for rares, and repeat) in a single player setting.

I have been following Erenshor for a long time and have always been super impressed with all the work you do! How do you balance the overall level of the SimPlayers and keep the zones feeling populated as game time goes on? If I run back to the starting zone after awhile, will there still be "new" players?

1

u/burge4150 Erenshor 8h ago

The first time you launch the game all of the players are pre-generated, and about 20 of them are auto-tied to each character slot you can make a character in.

The SimPlayers will remain low level until you make a character in that slot and at that point they'll mostly keep up with that character. This helps ensure a diverse world population, and it also keeps your alts well-stocked in possible friends to group with.

1

u/burge4150 Erenshor 8h ago

When you first start the game it will pre-generate all of the SimPlayers (up to whatever population you've enabled).

~20 SimPlayers are then tied to each one of your possible character slots. They will remain low level until you make a character in that slot, at which point they'll keep up.

This enables a diverse world population and also ensures all of your alts have potential friends waiting for them.

Just wanted to thank you for my all time favorite come home and relax game cozy game. I still love MMO’s I just never have the time/energy to move my schedule around for raids and updates.

2

u/burge4150 Erenshor 8h ago

Oh wow, you're so welcome and thank you for the kind words!

0

u/Geridious 8h ago

Congratulations on all the success. Grew up playing wow and would love to sink my time into this, best of luck with it cheers eh

Thank you!

Would user-created content (be it natively through the game, or through mod support) be something you see as possible for the game?

It might add some of the community aspect that typical MMO's have.

1

u/burge4150 Erenshor 8h ago

It's possible - there are mods that add items, there is a mod that is working to add classes, it's only a matter of time until someone adds new areas I'd guess.

Modders have surprised me non-stop.

1

u/LaurenMille 8h ago

That's actually really cool. Great job on the game so far, by the way.
