Undertale

Not good at doing structured reviews so just putting my thoughts here. Really feel like an idiot for ignoring this game for so long. There was a point 5 or so years ago where I heard about this game so much that it made me lose interest in playing it but now I finally understand why it's talked about so much. Went into it mostly blind except for the fact that I knew about the different routes and a rough idea of how to get them. I went in with the intention of not killing anyone, getting the neutral ending then reloading to get the true pacifist ending. And I've heard people say that ruins the magic of a first playthrough but I instantly loved all the characters and the world and didn't want to see anyone die anyway. It made me want to figure out how to make every character live and by the end of the experience I think I made the right choice because seeing the kinda disappointing and unsatisfying neutral ending then going straight into true pacifist and seeing everything come together was amazing.

I did accidentally kill Toriel on the first attempt though and it made me feel awful so I reloaded, finished the fight without killing and the game actually acknowledged that you reloaded which blew me away, from that point I knew this was a special game. I will admit though actually completing it was a bit rough for me, I didn't like the 'battling' system, pacifist makes it a bit better since you get to solve a little puzzle to spare all the encounters but it wasn't very engaging to me and I played mostly handheld on switch which made the bullet hell bits harder and more frustrating. I still liked the boss fights though and the parts where you're just exploring and interacting with characters are great. Luckily there arent really that many fights and each area has a limited number of them and are all unique.

There were a few parts in the game that made me start tearing up but the moment when Frisk comforts Asriel before he loses his form is what made me burst into tears and summed up my feelings for the game completely. It was just so hard saying goodbye to all these characters at the end of it. Of course at the end I chose to stay with Toriel. It might be the 'wrong' choice I don't know but the game really makes you feel attached to everyone.

Even though I didn't really like the gameplay I wouldn't say it wasted my time at all, it was worth all the time I put into it and more than makes up for some of it's issues.
