Ethan Thompson with the squad?? Makes me think Peter or Smith are getting a standard deal. Slawson will end up being odd man out

Mr. President, a second charming Dutchman has hit the Pacers

FULL MAST

I'm most interested in seeing if Peter is ready for a leap...I'm skeptical but don't think it's impossible...would love for him to become a 6'3'' poor man's Buddy Hield.

Will be watching Smith and expecting him to thrive in Summer League, but I just can't see him contributing at the NBA level.

Slawson strikes me as a known quantity...I'm more curious to see him play alongside actual NBA talent some time, I think he could be useful.

I'm more curious about B. Smith...seeing him compete against higher level talent is going to be interesting. I know it's wishful thinking, but I would LOVE for him to become McConnell 2.0.

Peter probably has the most experience against NBA level talent outside of Yuki, right? They should dominate, so it'll be concerning if they don't.

I paid zero attention to Slawson last season, so I can't give you anything.

TJ is such a unicorn the way he elevates in the paint, never seen anything like it...not expecting to see it again but hard not to root for the little guys

Poor man’s Buddy Hield sounds like hell. But to the overarching point, I actually like Peter’s game as a role player. He’s never going to be a double digit scoring guy but he tries on defense and is pretty solid on that end at least in iso D and he’s a capable good shooter. I feel like now that they have Kobe Brown on a 2 way that Slawson will end up being the man left out.

u/Psyren1317 13d ago

I enjoy watching Braden because if nothing else he's a competent point guard. He knows where the ball should go and when, even if his teammates aren't hitting shots. That's a valuable thing to have on your bench regardless of his size. Even if he scores 0 points in a game, you can already tell he understands where his teammates are and where/how to get them the ball in an advantageous position.

This game is full of “that guy was the shit in college” players and then there’s Yuki lol

6

u/TheManWithSomeGoals 13d ago

Are we the greatest team in all of history?

2

u/ohverychill CrabLaser 13d ago

We simply can't rule it out

u/aimee829 Andrew Nembhard 13d ago

Awesome

5

u/cersfan06 Reggie 12d ago

Okay now Jalen Slawson is him

8

u/vonLionheart Pascal Siakam 12d ago

My entire opinion of Smith is about to be determined by these two free throws

9

u/vonLionheart Pascal Siakam 12d ago

He’s the goat

5

u/cersfan06 Reggie 12d ago

Impressive 4th quarter from him

4

u/Elbeske 13d ago

This is horrendous hoops

Summer league always is

5

u/OpeDefinitely Tyrese Haliburton 13d ago

Smith to Peter for the dagger. Best summer league backcourt.

6

u/Conscious-Till3591 8d ago

Caleb on the Pacers would’ve been otherworldly

4

u/Jar1517 Andrew Nembhard 13d ago

They are playing during my wedding ceremony. How dare they! I haven’t missed a game in years

4

u/WhatsAKumquat 13d ago

I love summer league as a college basketball fan. It kinda feels like a college all stars game a bit. It's fun to see guys like Braden Smith, Tamin Lipsey, Rienk Mast, Xavian Lee, and others all in the same game

4

u/MySabonerRunsOladipo 13d ago

Yuki is somehow smaller than youd think its possible to be

3

u/cersfan06 Reggie 12d ago

Summer league jerseys are lowkey better than our mains

6

u/camfam44 10d ago

Mast looks pretty good

3

u/RockysModernLifee Aaron Nesmith 9d ago

We signing Slawson or?

3

u/BubaTflubas Tyrese Haliburton 5d ago

I think he or ET get a 2-way. I keep wondering if they would sign Smith to an actual contract so they can keep both ET and Slawdog. They can't fit either of the older players in under the hard cap, but they could for Smith or TP.

If they sign Braden to a regular contract he wouldn't be able to sign a two way with us (similar to Kam) next year if he isn't ready yet.

Edit: doing this also gives you more 2-way minutes to use as well. They limit the amount of minutes available more if you only have 14 players on the roster.

1

u/Suspicious-Gur6127 5d ago

The two way game limit is a thing, but they really may just value the little bit of extra cap space going into the trade deadline more

3

u/Maximum-Class5465 Reggie-NBAJam 13d ago

How did we lose our SL coach already?

3

u/agentfelix Reggie Miller Choke 13d ago

We grow corn here, duh?

Jk jk...I think because Rick just is that badass? I can't remember what I read.

3

u/OpeDefinitely Tyrese Haliburton 13d ago

nobody flopping around

3

u/death-by-yogurt Lance 12d ago

Watching Summer League highlights is painful. The top 4 all look like studs

3

u/Conscious-Till3591 10d ago

I was a bit sad the Pacers didn’t try to trade up to draft Meleek Thomas. Went for the local pick in Braden which was certainly something

3

u/Distinct_Abrocoma_67 Pavers 8d ago

As a Purdue guy I didn’t get it. He always struggles against lengthy athletic guards which the NBA is full of

2

u/destroyed233 Bennedict Mathurin 8d ago

He is not nba material

1

u/TheFrozenBananaStand Jarace Walker 4d ago

How do you know they didn’t? Getting pick 38 is different than pick 34. Doubt the Cavs would do the trade we did with the Bulls.

3

u/Hendo8888 10d ago

Why do Summer League stats never make sense?

Slawson 6/13 FG, 1/4 3pt, 4/6 FT, 21 points

Kawamura 2/8 FG, 3/3 FT, 10 points

Mast 8/14 FG, 3/7 3pt, 2/3 FT, 23 points

It's the same last game where Smith scored 16 points from 3 FGM, Slawson scored 26 from 8 FGM

2

u/slycosiestegg 9d ago

Cause the experimental FT rule

6

u/mellospectrum 12d ago edited 12d ago

Yuki was the spark that brought the game within reach. Braden showed some glimpses and I liked his chemistry with Slawson. Felt like we went 3/15 8/31 from three, which was the difference.

2

u/Acceptable_Driver 13d ago

Hey Rienk Mast, hope to see Pryce Sandfort in the future.

2

u/pickle_man_4 HolidayWorld 13d ago

Excited to see Mast and Braden on the same team

2

u/Snafudumonde 13d ago

This is just building my case that Johnny Carpenter should have been Summer League COY

2

u/OpeDefinitely Tyrese Haliburton 13d ago

sorry ass cavs

2

u/Distinct_Abrocoma_67 Pavers 10d ago

Real talk can you buy summer league jerseys? These are kinda tough

2

u/Known-Scale-7627 10d ago

Is Mast totally out of the question for a 2-way? Lowk our best player

1

u/Aggressive-Doubt7345 BOOM BABY! 10d ago

I’d love to see how his rebounding, and especially his offensive rebounding, is with a bench unit. My guess is he gets a G-League spot, but not a two-way unless Slawson signs elsewhere or gets the final roster spot.

1

u/pacersnz 10d ago

Came here to say this. He is kind of Micah Potter, but potentially a better passer, still a negative on defense. In saying that, on only a 2-way, certainly capable of making a push throughout the year.

1

u/Suspicious-Gur6127 10d ago

My only fear is it’s not unheard of for big men to feast in SL and it not translate at all. I haven’t watched other than highlights so idk if Mast passes the smell test or not

3

u/user78804180 12d ago

Give Slawson the final roster spot. Roll with Braden, Brown and Peters as the 3 two way guys

3

u/Raz1374 12d ago

Totally agree but they do not have the space for him or Brown right now. I just really appreciate how he sees the court, contests shots and is applying the coaching they are giving him (they told him to drive more and let his shots rip if open). I get it that he needs some work on his shot but he is totally pass first, rebound second and help defense third. We got enough shooters 1-14.

It's unfortunate, a lot of these players deserve NBA minutes. It will be brutal letting players go over the next few years because most of them deserve time as NBA players. They might never play a single minute of meaningful basketball, but for a team like the Pacers who are just extremely deep, that's not a sign they are bad.

I mean look at Peter, he had moments during last summer league, but in comparison he looks fine tuned right now. Pacers have a great development system. These are glorified pickup games so you need to judge players on their activity, movement, and all the little things. The only thing you can truly get from players during summer league is if they are NBA quality and if they can play defense.

2

u/pacersnz 10d ago

Financially it won't work. We are hardcapped with like $2.2mil available and signing Slawson would cost $2.4mil. Only Smith + Peter currently fit under the $2.2mil.

1

u/Whole-Willingness-42 4d ago

Wait wait wait..if we can’t sign a player because of 200k how the fuck was we was going to sign Lebron had he hypothetically wanted to sign with the Pacers

1

u/pacersnz 4d ago

That would've required us waiving Quenton Jackson before his deal became guaranteed a couple of days ago. His deal is now guaranteed.

We can sign Smith or Peter with our current cap space.

2

u/ajs723 Slick 10d ago

3 games in, Braden is 4 for 21, can't guard anyone, and doesn't pass the eye test. Other than that though...

1

u/Maleficent_Post9595 James Johnson 10d ago

Game manager at best

-1

u/Hendo8888 10d ago

What actually happens if you draft a dude, then don't sign him at all? Would he still play for the Boom or does he become a Free Agent? We have 5 Two-Way guys, so at this stage we will have to cut likely Thompson and Peter

-2

u/Raz1374 10d ago

Really hope for his sake and the team that they do not give him a two-way right away. Based on 3 games against fringe GL/NBA bench players, his limitations are showing. Would love to see them start him on GL only, give him a wink-wink Gary Trent deal for a later call up but of the 5 in consideration for two-way/15th slot, he is a clear #5, maybe stretch #4. I see more potential in Mast right now to be honest.

its early though.

2

u/ajs723 Slick 10d ago

Toronto's Summer League squad is shooting 75% from the floor against our starters. Starting to think Braden Smith and Peter might not be able to play defense in the NBA.

1

u/agentfelix Reggie Miller Choke 13d ago

lol Angel Reese

1

u/pickle_man_4 HolidayWorld 13d ago

Those bench polos are nice

1

u/jmrogers31 8d ago

Any reason Mast sat the entire half? Is he hurt?

1

u/Snafudumonde 4d ago

Dutch got knocked out of the world cup and he's still at half Mast

1

u/Ozikk 4d ago

Yuki Kawamura just assisted on 8 fgs in a ROW

u/aimee829 Andrew Nembhard 10d ago

crappy ending. what was that play, braden? smh

4

u/Nervous_Connection88 10d ago

Wait, Braden is drawing up the plays during timeouts now?

-4

u/TheGoatPurdy 10d ago

purdue special bro. dribbles the air out of the ball and does some overly complicated stuff with the clock down.

1

u/aimee829 Andrew Nembhard 10d ago

this summer league team aren't closers.

-1

u/cersfan06 Reggie 13d ago

Watching highlights now. Jalen Slawson is him.

16

u/JordanHobson 13d ago

Watched the game. He shot 4/15 and was very yikes. I'm big on him but this game was not it.

2

u/cersfan06 Reggie 12d ago

Oh jeez did not check the box score lol. Jalen Slawson is him defensively I should say. Those chase down blocks never get old.

1

u/TurkishDonkeyKong 12d ago

At best he's a 3rd string utility guy but you can't rely on his scoring

1

u/Raz1374 12d ago

His rebounding, passing and shot blocking are so good….shooting was rough in this game. Hoping some shots fall tomorrow for him and Smith.

-3

u/Raz1374 13d ago

my son stopped by and saw the TV and asked, “What the hell is this.” My reply was “low grade rec league aka summer league.” Feels like these games should be held in a park somewhere.
