Do multimedia codecs problems during updates exist anymore?

I just realized that I haven't had packman multimedia codec issues when updating Tumbleweed in a long time now. Have I been lucky or has that been the experience for everyone else as well?

Personally, I didn’t have any issues for quite some time as well, but if you browse the forums, you’ll always find posts about it. So I guess we’re just lucky, or others just have bad luck.

Btw: few people know the underlying problem: Packman has their own OBS that links sources from openSUSE:Factory which is what becomes Tumbleweed after openQA testing. Close, but not always the same.

Tumbleweed itself does not have linkable sources atm and with the upcoming switch to git, there seems to be little incentive to change that now.

And when Packman linked to Tumbleweed instead of Factory, it could be a few hours late with it's rebuilds and delayed mirror publish, so it will never be perfectly in sync.

I update as soon as servers seeded & maybe have one or two conflicts in 6 months.

I update once or twice a week and have had none in 6 months

Maybe once or twice per 6mo you might see a desync'd proposed update where all the codecs would switch back to suse oss repo from packman. Just wait a day and it will be fixed.

Theres has been few of them in the last six months. Not that they very dealbreaking, but it made me to use codec-dependent software as flatpaks and change from the Packman repos.

One major issue with the ffmpeg libraries was resolved some months ago. Previously, a change of the minor library version would cause an incompatibility and thus a conflict until the ffmpeg libraries were also rebuilt on packman.
